My car is a 2009 3.0TD, which is 15 years old and I have had it 12 years. It has been 100% reliable in 60,000 miles. The best car I have ever owned, very fast, comfortable and economical on motorway.

Hi Hilton. I have a 2013 XF3.0D Premium Luxury with a Stage One remap to bring it up to "S" spec in Italian racing red. Now on 52k miles and still drives and smells like new. It makes most other cars on the road, almost all of which seem to be in black, white or drab grey here in the UK, look dull and boring. I too have had a failed drivers side vent, which I replaced with a NOS one from Ebay for £90. Jaguar wanted £300! More seriously a failed alternator which left me stranded for 7 hours. I agree with you that the X250 is superior to the newer model in every respect. I recently considered changing it for a 2019 Mercedes CLS 350d and test drove one priced at £36k ( Four times the px value of mine) While it had all the modern tech and a sunroof, which I miss, it didnt ride as well ( Due to 20 inch wheels and low profile run flat tyres) or handle as well or was any quicker or quieter. I drove home in my XF with a new respect for it and my bank balance still intact! I always enjoy your vids!

Don't buy a Mercedes-Benz. Quality is atrocious and things will start falling apart after a few years of ownership. Nice when new, but not a good 2nd hand buy. I've looked at many and small things like seat belt clips that break, window switches failing, dash components failing, faulty instrument clusters and inability to communicate with the ECU.

Water pump failing after 6 months, normal wear and tear lol.. Thanks for the video, I know the plastic tubings and water pump are a known weak point on these, I work on my own cars so I am not afraid of tackling a water pump or odd bushing wearing out. I will probably buy a 2012 to 2016 model.

I own a XF S Diesel from 2012 with 8 speed gearbox. I have to say the gearbox shifts sometimes quite rough if you change from automatic to manual mode, but apart from that, the car is a dream to drive! Insane amount of torque, fuel consumption around 6-7l in the city (!) and makes you feel like the king of the road ;) I would never give it back, simply fantastic car!!!

Thanks Hilton! I agree with everything you say. I've got late 2013 built facelift model of XF 3.0 SC. Bought it privately with 48000km regularly serviced, in Sydney. It's beautiful to drive. The same experience I share from customer service as well. My one also had to have water pump replaced with the previous owner. I have had no problems at all after doing further 20000km. Passenger side airbag was replaced under warranty as part of recall in Australia. I am trying to see if somebody can demonstrate oil and filter replacement on this model, though?! I have watched one on your model. Thanks for all your videos and advice. Very useful and easy to follow. Great stuff! Kind regards. AB
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 5 жыл бұрын
Hey AB, thanks for watching. Yeh, when it comes to oil changes I leave that to the dealer. At least I get a year warranty on parts and labour. Btw, you bought the perfect XF. A 3.0 s/c is very powerful and doesn't require as much maintenance as the V8 s/c. Just make sure you definitely change the oil once a year or every 15,000km, otherwise the oil turns to sludge and you will soon have a piston through the block. A neighbor of mine did that to his and now the car was written off. 😉

Jaguar service and customer care is a totally unique experience. My XJ6 is 12 years old and, through convenience, I have had to take it somewhere local instead of to the main dealer. Fortunately I have found an enthusiastic garage and, of course, it’s much cheaper! I don’t know where you are in the world, or which dealer you use but the labour costs here are quite extortionate, nearing £200 an hour! However, a wheel issue, with brake binding, forced me to take it somewhere local and, including laser 4 wheel alignment, the total was under £150. (I always insist on Jaguar parts too, as even Jaguar dealers sometimes use “aftermarket” parts!).
@carfanfan

I agree. Their labor rates are the equivalent of £100 here per hour, but still it's high for one gets.

Thanks is Mike. I recently had the same experience with Jaguar. I had to take it back 3 times to fix a suspension noise and leaky a/c. Then on the 3rs attempt, they buckled both left side wheels hitting a pothole during a test drive. Luckily I had my dashcam to give me the proof. Now I'm waiting for lockdown to stop to get my new wheels out of them after they repaired the damaged ones but vibration still there. It doesn't end with dealers. I literally hate them.

@@carfanfan , Ive had similar problems. What erks me about dealers service is " service writers " make commision on everything they write. This isn't just Jaguar but all dealer service . I've done some pretty complicated repairs , but saved thousands and aggravation. I'm trying to do my front brakes on my xf. Seems Jaguar used an 11 mm hex drive for caliper slides . They don't sell em anywhere . I'm waiting on one from eBay right now. KZfaq shows most all repairs you need to do if your a bit handy it just takes time and the right tools .
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikejacobs4727 It's good if you can service your own car Mike, but that stamp means a lot in the service book when selling it on. Keeps the resale value higher. I can't work on mine as it's still under warranty and maintenance plan. I'll probably extend the warranty if I have it past this year but not the service plan. It's actually quite reliable despite the suspension noise and a/c leak, but engine has been solid and gearbox. Never skips a beat. I still yearn for an older XF with the 3.0 s/c engine or an XFR.
@mikejacobs4727

@@carfanfan , if your having an issue with a/c it might be the direct pressure sensor valve. It is a faulty part of the a/c system and a common problem with the compressor. eBay has em any a/c shop can install it rather easily. Just a thought . The way you tell is the low side pressure in the system will be spiked. Air will be semi cool and hot. I changed mine and it blows ice cold again

I am fortunate enough to own a Jaguar XF-R 5 Litre Supercharged model. It will soon be 4 years old, will have done 35,000 miles and my only complaint is with the windscreen wipers not pumping out any washer fluid, although the headlamp washers work fine. I have since found out that this is very common and is due to a blocked filter on the lower pump. It is a 30 minute DIY job if I can brave the current cold snap. Other than that the car is a dream machine and does 32 mpg on a long run ( although not if you behave like a boy racer away from the lights). The acceleration is phenomenal and it is one of the few cars I have owned where the passengers are as happy with the ride as the driver. Thoroughly recommended if you can get the V8 version.

EXCELLENT honest video. Honestly, I just can't get into the newer Jaguars. I think the reason is I have owned Jaguars for 40 years and currently have a 1956 XK 140, 1962 XKE OTS, and a 1987 XJ6 VP. These are real Jags made/designed by Sir William Lyons at Brown's Lane. The newer ones have a tremendous amount of Ford parts. I am glad though Ford bought them in 1989 {and now Nata Motors) to keep the brand alive. I am very happy the younger generation are into Jags!

Another informative and honest review...…...I'm going to get mine serviced after Christmas, not by Jaguar but a really good mechanic I have used for years, I just hope mine is as reliable as yours. I,ve been away from Jaguar for too long.....right now I cant think of another car I would rather have...…….I just love it...…….always brings a smile to my face...….especially with ACDC on USB lol. There is just something special about driving this with "shoot to thrill" on high volume, but then at 50 Im still a child and Iron Man is my favourite MCU character!!! Took my youngest daughter to work this morning as her car was in for its service and she was awestruck at how smooth it is...…..but was shocked at how powerful it is......must admit I was showing off a bit (safely of course but occasionally "slipping" into "S") but I think everyone should try a Jaguar for a test drive.....there would be no other cars on the road!!!! What a fantastic car.

Congratulations on your purchase. You will love the car. Personally I prefer the 5.0l V8 but the 4.2 is a proven engine and tough as nails. Just don't skip and oil change, it turns oil to sludge due to high operating temps. Just so u can understand if i were to rank it by reliability i will give it a generous 4 out of 10 . The cars are just not reliable , unless u drive it once a week . Again , for the money , the car has absolutely no equal , Once u get inside a XF or XJ you'll understand where i'm coming from .. It's a buy with the hearth car , not with your head . My advice : do not buy a second hand Jag unless its very low mileage ...

Thanks for the comment. I agree. I've been fortunate to buy all mine with low mileage and this particular 2009 model had 60k miles when I sold it. My XFR only has 30k miles on the clock and has been very good to me so far. I use it for short trips to the shops and longer trips for breakfast runs and it just goes without a hitch. XF 250s are great cars as you said. Discs and pads suffer excessive wear on all models, air vents, window motors and excessive wear on suspension are common faults. A less so common issue is the inlet manifold cracking but still a common problem. Some models have lights that provide poor visibility at night due to the shape of the bonnet. Get your belts changed at 117k. Other than that, the car will keep running. I recommend servicing every 10k miles or every year (whatever comes sooner). I also recommend buying one as they are real workhorses.

Water pumps are also an issue as I've found on the forums. My XF has great lights and with LED's in them, they're even better. Coolant hoses leaking was also an issue I've recently had, but after forcing the dealer to do a pressure test and find ALL leaks and replace ALL hoses, no more leaks :)
@Matt-df6hz
@Matt-df6hz 6 жыл бұрын
I've heard of water pumps too, wasn't sure if it was common or not though. I've got gas lamps in my car (factory fit), the lights themselves are not the problem, the shape of the bonnet is the problem. In terms of pipes, my boost pipe was leaking and had to be replaced but not had a problem with any hoses.

My 2009 XF was a nightmare, It kept going into limp mode because all the technology on it to reduce the emissions, pumped out by a 3 litre diesel engine, like the EGR valves and DPF filters getting clogged. Jaguar dealer was no help, their advice was to blast the car for 30 mins at 3000 revs, to clean out the soot, great pollute the atmosphere even more, does'nt that defeat the object, I spent over 2 grand on it to no avail, glad to rid of it, got a Lexus GS 300h instead, superb.

The problem with buying an older XF is to ensure the previous owner looked after it. If they didn't, then it won't look after you. My guess is they got rid of it just as the DPF was needing replacement.

I've since learned that the X250 shape like these are the most solid ones because they were built during the Ford era. Tata now owns Jaguar and the new Jags are built with really poor materials. However, it seems they are now trying to redress that. You will love that car!

@@carfanfan According to Mr Google, Tata bought Jaguar way back in 2008 meaning unless a few cars were built between its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor show in 2007 and when Jaguar were sold to Tatal, all the XF's were produced under the ownership of Tata, not Ford, as the XF was released at the motor show, but not sold in the UK until 2008 when Ford sold the company. Ford did own Jaguar in 1999 and Land Rover from the following year, selling both companies to Tata in 2008. The XF (X250) was apparently built on the Ford DEW platform (albeit heavily modified), a platform also used by the outgoing S-type, the Lincoln LS and the Ford Thunderbird (I'm led to believe).

I will be looking to get another car in the next few months, coming out of a 2005 Saab 9-3 arc I want (can't compare this 2)something kinda similar, just got a 2015 Subaru legacy 3.6R for wife and I really like it, but i saw a black jaguar a few weeks ago and I really don't see this cars around my area, I have doing research on this cars and I like the 2009 fxr 5.0 supercharged and the 2012 same model, let me say that you seem so genuine when you talk that it attracts me into getting one cause I rather pay more for the service than to pay less for a crapy service, I'm saying this cause our 1st oil change on wife's Subaru was horrible even when we had a appointment and they took 1 hour and 45 mind to do a simple oil change. I tell my wife if I was able to afford an $100.00 dollar per coil pack ×4 and a $100.00 oil changes and a $1300.00 clutch i can afford a jaguar lol. Thank you for making this video it is actually encouraging in to looking more on this car and I definitely can see me in one of this, the factor at the end will be the price as both Subaru and jaguar run about the same price tag for the models that I would want to get.

@carfanfan 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear Matsobang. Just a word of advice, I am on my 3rd Jaguar XF now and I've noticed over the past 10 years that these cars don't like to stand too long. You must drive it at least twice a week to get that battery charged. Due to all the electronics on the car, the battery will drain if not driven regularly. The V8's are pretty good, but on the 4.2 be sure to check that the timing chain tensioners have been replaced at some point because they are plastic and when they fail, it's catastrophic. They must be replaced every 10 years or 160,000km's whichever comes first and if not, it's a ticking time-bomb as to when they will fail. If they fail, they damage to the engine and you need to replace the engine. The cost of the repair doesn't warrant the value of the vehicle and they usually end up on the scrap heap. The 3L V6 models are solid as are the 5L V8's. If you choose a 2.2 Diesel or a 2L petrol, they are pretty reliable as well. The 3L diesel does tend to suffer from dirty diesel particulate filters - these need to be cleaned out every couple of years otherwise you get a check engine light and restricted performance. Basically, it comes down to maintenance. If you maintain it when it's services are due (and this includes scheduled services for big items such as spark plugs, super charger pulley belts, gearbox services - most of which happen every 8 years or so) then you have a solid car. Like all cars, if you don't look after it, it will break sooner or later ;)

@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
hey Le Bron, I haven't personally had bluetooth issues with my old XF, but I did with my newer X260. They had to reload the software on it. However, you can't do that with the old XF. Based on what I've read on the forums about the bluetooth issues is that the module becomes faulty. It sits under the right hand side front seat carpet and is usually the culprit. If I were you, have the car scanned to see if the bluetooth module is indeed faulty, if it is, get a salvage one from a scrapped car. Buying new will break your bank! Have to tried resetting it? Erase all previously connected devices and then try again. When trying again, make sure you phone is in the bluetooth setting and also scanning for a new device while the car does the same. Either one will pop up with the code. My phone is an Android Ulefone and if I'm not inside the bluetooth settings, it isn't discoverable. It could just be that.

I have a 2009 XF SC V8... all 4 of my vents ain't blowing cold but the rear Ac blows super cold.... what might be the cause... although my vents ain't opening no more when I start the car.... is the worn out plastic stepper motor also the reason why my vents ain't blowing cold????
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Benny - those little stepper motors Jaguar used on the vents are actually used in the HVAC as well. My guess is the HVAC stepper motors are failing or the plastic gears are worn and the flaps aren't opening and closing properly which allows hot air through to mix with the cold air. The cold air going to the rear goes through a different vent hole in the HVAC which explains why the rear is colder. I've read that the electronic heater can also cause issues with the vents not opening. If you remove the glove box, you will see a little wire connected to the side of the HVAC, if you disconnect that wire, it apparently fixes the problem. I not so sure about that though because I've never needed to do it. However, I would suggest a reset of the HVAC system. In order to do this, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for 10 mins and reconnect it again. That should reset everything in the HVAC and see if that solves the issue.

Hi, thanks for the video. I am pretty set on buying an XK or XF, hopefully a supercharged one. What is the realistic running cost per year should I expect from a ~90k miles used car? And what MPG do you get in the city? The official 18 on 4.2 XKR sounds a bit too good to be true. Thanks.
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Gas mileage on the XK's are actually better than you'd expect at around 25 mpg. Cost-wise? At that mileage check the brakes were recently done, they're very expensive to do. Also check the water pump has been replaced recently, they go at around 60,000 or 8 years. Check for coolant leaks (a low reservoir bottle indicates a leak) - coolant hoses tend to leak at that age and mileage. Never buy one that doesn't have full service history, chances are the previous owner sucked all the goodness out of the car and is dumping it to avoid servicing costs or a hefty repair bill. I'd recommend the 5.0l V8 over the 4.2 as parts are more readily available and gas mileage is even better as well as more power. Good luck with your purchase ;-)
@ultimate__pictures
@ultimate__pictures 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for response. So I am looking at 4.2 XKR (08-09), 5.0 XK (10), 3.0 XF Supercharged (12), and XF 5.0 (12) possibly even supercharged. What would be your recommendation? 09 XKR is the sportiest and the fastest one, so I was leaning towards it. A good 5.0 XKR is a bit too expensive. Also what about the gearbox? How long does it usually last?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 5 жыл бұрын
@@ultimate__pictures Personally I'd go for the (12) 3.0 supercharged. Light on fuel, cheaper to maintain and repair and it had 250kw which is more than enough to leave most pretenders behind 😁. The 3.0 will have an 8 speed tranny and so will the 5.0 (12), but the older ones will have a 6 speed tranny. The gearboxes are both from ZF and used in BMW and Audi models as well. They are pretty solid. They require a service every seven to eight years which requires a new plastic oil pan (not cheap as it has a built in filter and has 21 screws holding it in place) and new ZF oil, also not cheap. Most owners don't even know about the tranny service and don't do it - that will cause it to fail or start shifting harder and harder or even slipping. Mine had it's change at 8 years even though it still shifted fine. They good cars. I love the R models because they look better and are indeed sportier, but when things go wrong, they wrong on an expensive scale. If you can't afford a good XKR then you can't afford a bad one either - it will Rob your bank account. Rather buy a later model that's easier and cheaper to maintain where parts are easily accessible as there are more on the roads. The 3l supercharged was very popular and there are quite a few of them out there. I'm even considering one myself, but a 2015 model (last of the X250 body styles).

@@ultimate__pictures Oh yes, a 5.0 will be a good choice if you want a V8. That engine is still used in Range Rovers and the F-type. $3k maintenance budget would be more than adequate. If it doesn't need brakes or spark plugs or tires, services will set you back around $400-600 per year which is reasonable for a luxury sports car. Let me know once you buy your Jag. Hey Afif, sounds to me like the stepper motor clutch has failed. It's a small round plastic piece that attaches to the motor and grabs the vent to open and close. Check out this video to see what I mean - you can fix it yourself if and replace the faulty part - the genuine ones are part number C2Z31321 and they are relatively cheap. You can also buy them direct from other suppliers www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/498433/5497/facia_ventilation_stepper_motor_clutch___jaguar_xf_2009_2015 Here's the link to the video that explains how this breaks: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM-JjZiHt7CqkaM.html

How many miles do you drive in one yr. Where I'm from I would put on about 50,000 to 60,000 a yr on a vehicle.

Shane Halona woah, that's many miles. I do about 5000 miles a year. But mostly town driving which is harder on the car than freeway driving.

I'm looking at a 2010 XF 5.0 Supercharged. Do you know any common problems with that trim? Or how reliable they are?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 6 жыл бұрын
Raider Actual Common issues are coolant leaks on hoses. Check it out thoroughly because the performance versions have usually had the crap driven out of them. I'd recommend calling the dealer who serviced it and check what items if any were repaired on this car. Also check warranty claim history with Jaguar. If all checks out, you're buying the best version of XF you can get. I often wish I'd bought a 5.0 V8 supercharged.

Hi i am thinking of getting an xf shortly,how is diesal consumption , and any other things to look out for when buying ?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 6 жыл бұрын
Geoff Gelder Hey Geoff, mine is petrol, but the 2.2 diesel and 3.0L diesel are excellent buys. When buying make sure it has full service history from a franchised dealer otherwise you're going to buy an unloved problematic. Look out for front wishbone leaks at the bushings, water pump leaks ( check the coolant level this will tell you if any coolant leaks), check that the vents all work properly, when test driving check the tranny changes smoothly both up and down. If the tranny is rough, it needs an oil change and the sump gets replaced when thats done and its not cheap. Check the front wheel bearings, uneven tire wear will tell you if they're worn. You can also feel it when driving if the car tends to wonder off track. Other than that, they very good reliable cars as long as they have been serviced when Jaguar stipulates. Diesels have cambelts so check if that was done when it was supposed to. Good luck, you have a lot of fun to look forward to. Buying my XF was the best thing I ever did and the best car I've ever owned. ;-)

wdid you have any other issues when you water pump failed ?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I did. When the dealer changed the water pump, they had to remove some coolant pipes in front of the engine and the coolant bottle. So a few months later, the large expensive coolant hose which splits into five directions started leaking and then the coolant reservoir started to leak because it was cracked possibly from being dropped. After fixing those issues it never needed any other maintenance under the hood other than annual services.

Hi Hilton, Am looking at getting another British car. Have a 1968 Triumph Spitfire MK3 and am looking at the 2010 XF for to and from work. What mileage has your car done?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 6 жыл бұрын
Claydon Mac Donald Mine is a 2009 and has 60,000 miles on it. Most of the XF's I see in AutoTrade have over 150,000 moles on them for 2010 models, so these cars are pretty solid. Just make sure it has full service history and check its warranty claim history. The 2010 had a small facelift to the mirrors and screen color and a HD backup camera.

I hope you didn't pay for new brake rotors because you didn't get them. You can see that the front rotors have been turned with a brake lathe; they're definitely not new. Doing your own repairs would save you a lot of money and it's not that difficult. I'm on my second Jaguar now, great cars if you look after them.

How is the gas mileage? I just test-drove a nice 2013 XF Portfolio but within no time a quarter tank of gas was gone!
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 7 жыл бұрын
76ers Mine uses about 13L per 100km (not sure what that is in miles per gallon) I don't think its bad because a tank lasts me a month. I do a lot of town driving. On the highway, it goes down to 10 liters per km which is very good for a car this big and heavy. What engine did the car you tested have?
@76ers
@76ers 7 жыл бұрын
13L per 100km = 3.4gal per 62miles. So that's about 18 mpg. I was testing Jaguar XF Portfolio with the V8 Engine. It was getting only 15mpg (15L/100km). I'm used to driving a 30mpg (7L/100km) vehicle so this was a huge difference. I thought the gas tank had a hole or something.

So should I buy an xf 2012 2.2 d? For under 200 thousand rand these cars are looking like a decent option.
@carfanfan
@carfanfan Жыл бұрын
The 2.2d is very frugal. It's a good buy. Low maintenance costs. Just make sure you test drive it, and it's performing well. Also, full maintenance records. If they are not maintained properly, the oil turns to sludge, and that means a new motor. Also, the DPF can cause the car to go into limp mode. Restricted performance. It won't have much power in this mode. The DPF cleans itself out when you dontrips longer than 100km, so if you do a lot of town driving, be sure to stretch uts kegs once a week.

You can, but unless you have a V8 s/c I don't see why. To be honest, 20" wheels make the ride hard and get damaged more easily by potholes. 18" wheels look good and give you a nice compliant ride 😉

You don’t state what mileage your car has done. I have a 10 plate 3.0s. The r/ hand rocker has split twice. The rear fog lights failed. The alternator failed. The off side suspension spring snapped. Rear tyres last just 5000 miles and that’s on Dunlop tyres. It has full service history. The rear door locks failed. It is way under average miles. BUT it’s still the best car I have ever driven.

Jags are nice but maintenance costs, depreciation, and reliability (consumer reports) are an absolute deal breaker.
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, if I look at the 2016 VW Golf 1.4 Tsi we owned, it depreciated at a far rapid rate than my Jaguar. Those are misconceptions with modern Jags - VW's are just as costly to maintain as any other "luxury" car out there. Considering my annual maintenance bill for my Jag was $1500 and depreciation $1350, that levelled against the VW Golf's depreciation alone of $2700 per year (it had a maintenance plan so costs there), but one can see, the Jag cost only slightly more in total even without its maintenance plan. It's so reliable that I only have annual services that need to be done, nothing has broken on the car in the past two and a half years. So reliability definitely is good on modern Jaguars.
