My XF S was only serviced 2000 miles ago, at an independent Jag Specialist garage. It had a major service and cam belt change and everything was good. I filled up at a local supermarket, before setting off on a 270 mile trip. About 20 miles into the trip, I got the water in the fuel, check handbook warning message! I thought here we go, another expensive trip to the garage and will I even get to my destination. I looked in the handbook and I couldn't find anything about what to do, so I googled the problem and amongst the results was this video. I am very practical and even recently rebuilt a 1974 Triumph Spitfire, however my XF is dealer maintained or Jag Specialist maintained, so I don't normally get my spanners out to it. This video is really well done and even includes how to re-prime the system, so I ordered a filter from Berkshire Jag Components (a Bosch filter, about £39 including next day delivery) and did the job myself. It took about 15 minutes, was dead easy and I had no problems what so ever. So thank you very much indeed, for taking the time to film and post this!

My first impression when I saw this video was, Thank God I’ve found others who have the same fault and there’s an “Easy Fix”. Then I thought, Do I really want to risk trying to fix a Jaguar? Well...I watched the video and followed the instruction to the letter. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! Thanks! Did mine two days ago, was a life saver as its close to Christmas and no mechanics anywhere to be found! Only thing to add is the syphoning process too a lot longer for me and had to repeat and took 8 times to start my car.

Had exactly the same symptoms when entering motorway and giving plenty of throttle my 2.2 XF. Engine died and had to coast back onto hard shoulder. Thank god it didn't happen on one our lovely new " smart motorways" . Re-started a few seconds later and drove home on reduced power. Changed fuel filter and all is well. Interestingly I date checked the filter and despite having so called service history ( I bought the car with 80 k on the clock) the filter was the factory fitted original !

Hi Leon, great video! Got some real insight as my 2013 Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel presents with a similar code - P0088. My local garage says a fuel filter change like what you did in the video should solve the problem. I am contemplating doing that or going to the dealer for a full diagnostic that's about 80 EUR. What do you advise?

Worth a try. Regularly serviced by Jaguar @ 135,000. Just noticed that there is no sign of a filter change anywhere in the service book…… Sheesh! Where did you get your SDD software? My jaguar XF 4.2L supercharger engine power is low... my check engine is on... I haven't changed my fuel filter ever since I bought it 2 years ago... is that the problem???? Where is the fuel filter located in the XFS

Excellent, thank you. That filter must be the original, I suppose you could find out its age from the serial number. A disgrace to the Jaguar main dealer if it is. It just goes to show, a main dealer service history is not always what it appears to be.

I have a 2011 XF Portfolio and it keeps saying that there is water in the fuel, would a new filter solve this problem. i have done what the user manual says but it still says that there is water in the fuel. Any help would be appreciated

So this light has been coming on constantly recently and after I see it sometimes the car shuts down completely but doesn’t have no reduction in power, starts right back up and drives beautifully but it is doing it frequently. A mechanic ...not the dealer, put that car check thing in the box and nothing for the code. I hope it’s a fuel filter for me too because that light scares me and my pockets!

I have an water in diesel warning. I plan to change fuel filter which is probably due as 10 yrs old. How do I re-set warning light do I need specialist plug in diagnostic equipment?

Doesn't surprise me. I will NEVER take my jaguar to a Main jaguar dealership again. Was told fault on mine was as a result of having a 'non jaguar approved' filter fitted so warranty didn't cover fault or replacement. Only thing is, the 'non jaguar part' was fitted by the jaguar main dealer i bought car from 12 weeks earlier. When I got car home checked new filter to find this main dealer had fitted an identical make and manufacturer filter ( that they advised was non jaguar approved). My opinion is that the service departments are crooks and rip off merchants. But parts on line and DIY. :)

Do I need a special tool to remove the fuel hoses on the top of the canister? Just thought I should check before I stick me head under the bonnet

Laptop is a Panasonic CF52 tough book (off eBay) that I use solely for diagnostics. I think I paid a couple of quid online somewhere for the workshop manual (google these onlinemanuals type sites) - I think the 2.7D and petrol one is available through the Jaguar forums for free. The Mongoose JLR (clone) cable came off the 'bay too and usually comes with a CD of the SDD software, or you could always 'ahem' torrent it ;)

Hi, very informative video, just had my annual service done and that included fuel filter replacement (XF2009 diesel 3.0), an error in dash 'Water in Fuel' straight after service, mechanic suggesting to change the sensor under the filter, any idea what that might be ?

You could have avoided this by changing the fuel filter when it should be changed - or better yet before it needs changing. It’s an easy job.

Please anyone, tell me what else could cause this light. I hope it’s just a fuel filter because my car does run beautifully so it’s hard to believe my engine is about to go.
