Drilling Into a $4,000 Engine to Fix a Rare Problem

Күн бұрынAfter dealing with a stumbling idle and random misfire, I finally determined the injectors were loose in this 2008 BMW 335i with the N54 engine. It's a pretty rare problem, but the injector holes can become loose due to improper injector installation or removal.
So I took a gamble on this engine and tried out the PPI repair kit. To perform the repair, you have to drill out the injector hole, tap the hole, and insert a new sleeve for the injector to seal against. It was one of the scariest repairs I've ever had to do...

Injector bore was ovaled out. The fix is drilling out the bore and tapping it for a harder insert that won’t oval over time. Cause of the issue is usually lack of maintenance. Injector seals go bad and don’t get fixed, removing injectors without the proper tools etc and or not being seated properly allowing pressure to escape through the bore
