Isfahan's Jaame Mosque or Masjed-e Atiq is one of the oldest historical structures in Isfahan. Archaeological excavations in the area have unearthed evidence suggesting that the mosque may have been used as a fire temple before the Arab conquest of Iran. The discovery of the remains of a column base with Sassanian decorations confirms the existence of a pre-Islamic structure on this site.
After the advent of Islam in Iran and the rise of Islamic dynasties, the mosque's initial construction is believed to date back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AH and the Abbasid era. In the 3rd century AH, its mihrab was destroyed, and the qibla (direction of prayer) of the Isfahan Jaame Mosque was changed. A library was also built in the mosque to house the authoritative books of that period.
