All of James Bond's more negative treats were those of Ian Flaming's. Bond was never meant to be the perfect super spy that we see him as in the movies. He was a man who had some less likely views drank and sometimes smoked too.much and got into brood over what he did. Flaming once noted that Bond wasn't really a good guy he was just loyal to his country.

I agree. Some black young people have been told by their parents why white people use the N-word. To degrade them, make them feel less than others, that they were ugly. I’m from the deep south and I don't like the N-word in any shape or form. Some black people use the word because many generations from slavery to today don’t see anything wrong with using the N-word. As for my household, we were not allowed to use it. I have taken an African Americans Studies class because I wanted to understand the origin of my people. As for a disclaimer at the beginning of books, I do agree. Some Caucasians feel bad or uncomfortable about reading about the history of slavery, think about how African Americans feel. It never leaves our minds because the pain is always there in some shape or form. We just deal with it. Always.

The problem with Sunny's position is it is a slippery slope and can lead to other things. Everything is triggering to someone. I have read some of Toni Morrison's work and in my view, some of her portrayals of pathologies in the black community are downright disturbing and quite frankly gratuitous. But I would never advocate for taking any of that out of her work, as I understand it's part of our story. I am sure if they removed those aspects of her work, Sunny would not approve. The issue with this is if you get enough people on board to deem something offensive anything can be erased and it's not productive. Ana is right - they are taking this stuff too far and it is diluting these conversations. Art is something you don't have to engage with. Let people make their own choices.

This isn't the result of people protesting. This is the PUBLISHER wanting to do this. The fact is, people are not reading the Bond books or the Dahl books like they used to and, especially in the Dahl case, children are more likely to read these with the changes and parents are more likely to buy them for them. Also, Dahl did make changes to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when the first movie came out so it's not like he was opposed to changing them.

I don’t support revisionist history of any kind. It’s ridiculous to edit these books and give children a false idea of how people interacted with each other during certain time periods. We are making kids dumber by not forcing them to contextualize things and think critically.

Then you would have to go back and edit every single book that in any way denigrated the female or put the man above her, or was misogynist or sexist. This would include editing thousands and thousands of books from the past. Are they suggesting doing that? Really? If they’re going to do it for blacks and other people of color or Jews, then they definitely should do it for women.

Literature is ART. If you find the content offensive just don’t read it and don’t let your kids read it. When the kids are old enough and are seeking truth, they’ll find it in its purest form- unfiltered, unadulterated and authentic. Polishing the language of literature is like removing or covering up the private parts of Michelangelo’s David…

Sunny is wrong. If I right a poem, nobody gets to come along after the fact and change the words they didn't like. They do get to have an opinion on the poem. They an ignore my work and not read it at all. That's it. I also find it interesting that Sunny is satisfied that they removed the n-word from the Bond books, but somehow all the misogyny, gets to stay. You have to ask, who gets to decide what is taken out and why? When will they decide that women should be spoken of with respect along with black people in the Bond books? Whoopi is 100% correct here.

@@Chillhard It's a legit issue for everyone, actually. I didn't say it was Sunny's responsibility to bring it up, I merely pointed out that she didn't seem to notice or have a problem with it. I know it was the publisher's decision but WHY? The publisher isn't the author. It's not their work to fundamentally change, which is what they are doing.

Erasing black vernacular is not a solution. The history of this country when it comes to racism is murky and uncomfortable but it needs to be taught and it needs to be archived; we’re still learning about wars that happened almost 2 centuries ago why is slavery the most uncomfortable truth for our country. Racism exist and until it does we need to know where we came from to know where we’re going.

People are really underinformed about Roald Dahl’s original racism. Oompa Loompas were Africans that were happy working in his workshop for free in exchange for living with Willy Wonka, they changed it for the movie because that’s WILD. But that’s the one book I’m fine with them changing.

I don't like erasing history. History has good and bad woven into it. This is the same as DeSantis removing numerous books from school shelves because he deems them as "inappropriate". It is not a good thing. You can teach your child this is how it used to be but NOT anymore. History is history. Art is art. Facts are facts.

They're not the same. Not taking racist stuff out of an old book when people already understand that people spoke and thought differently during that time is not the same as saying racism and misinformation today as free speech. This is also not the same thing as changing the name of a school. A school or street doesn't HAVE TO have a certain name, but someone's work will always be their work
