I recently built a home cinema and instead of going for a native 4K laser projector, I went with a 3D native 4K DLP one just to experience avatar series, life of pi & gravity on 3D blu ray and it’s so much immersive, it’s even better than 4K blu ray

I remember reading when Peter Jackson held one of his Hobbit movie screening for an audience in 48fps/HFR, many complained about how it did not look natural and walked out of the screening because movies were supposed to be shot in 24fps and shown in it. Now, with Cameron's Avatar, everyone, including movie theatres and the audiences seems to embrace 48fps/HFR. Your thoughts on this phenomenon would be appreciated.

I am all in for 24fps! Have personally never watched LOTR or Hobbit films but I’m guessing they were used throughout the film and not for certain sequences. For dialog scenes if I had to witness 48fps it would’ve taken me out of the film too honestly

Interesting commentary, nice to see Bwana Devil mentioned since the restoration is coming out this year. Surprised you didn't mention rendered 3D since that's still a popular real native stereo option. Pixar (Bob Whitehill!) and Illumination (John R.A. Benson!) are great examples of absolutely stunning stereo rendering, and they continue on into 2024 and beyond. Hell, most of Avatar 2 is rendered anyway lol. I'm disappointed we won't see that put to use in the next planet of the apes, since those have excellent 3D work by, who else but weta lol

Nice video man 🎉 What r your views on 3D in VR headsets? Should we start storing our fav movies in 3D aswell for future watching in VR ? *FYI - I have LG Cinema 3D 48inch TV bought during 3D hype during 2012 but later realised bigger is always better for 3D* I think you should buy PS5 VR2 or Occulus Quest & then make a video on Movie watching in big screen as not everyone has access to IMAX screens😢

Cameron was applying his talent with 3D cinematography in The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, T2, True Lies and Titanic. I didnt know it or see it until Avatar. Cameron opened my mind up to 3D cinematography with Avatar just as 2001 opened up a whole new world of storytelling for many filmmakers, including James Cameron. What matters is how the background or set design aligns with the story and characters. Look at the curvature of jungle leaves in Avatar. What does that feel like in relation to Jake or Neytiris image?? What do these images make you feel? Then you'll know what you're supposed to feel. Avatar is the simplest and purest example of this artform. If you want to see a more complex example of Cameron's 3D craftsmanship, watch Aliens. Or even T2. But Cameron has to simplify his craft so that everyone can see the world the way he does. Because honestly, there is no reason why Aliens or T2 werent bigger hits.

Thanks for shedding some light on JC's filmmaking process. I do disagree with you that the format is dead. Jurassic World Dominion made 25% of its World-wide gross from 3D screenings.

You’re not wrong. But I meant to say that there’s no enthusiasm around the format. But yes “dead” is probably not the most suitable word.
