After seeing a segment on "Real Time with Bill Maher" addressing obesity rates in the United States, in which Bill's thesis is that fat shaming needs to make a comeback, James Corden felt compelled to respond with a different perspective. Simply put, fat shaming hasn't gone anywhere and is perhaps the worst approach to a complex issue for people across the globe.

ironically both Bill and James are partially right and wrong at same time, fat people are two types: those who eat excessively, have lazy lifestyle despite being capable of changing it, the part Bill shamed, and those who genetically have low metabolism, bad genes, and who would do whatever they could but do not lose weight because their bodies arent programmed to be at right BMI, the part James defends, it is complicated situation

That’s why it’s “good days and bad months...” Discipline is a habitual thing, but life does happen and wrenches get thrown in. I’m the same way- not with drinking but with weight. Yeah, I’m down 40 pounds, but I still have 40 to go. Some weeks, you’re kicking ass. Some weeks, you have 60 hours to work and you set yourself up for failure. The problem with food is that unlike drinking, you can’t quit completely and I think that is a problem especially when it comes to portion control. I get what you’re saying and the comparison you’re making, but everyone is different in a different bracket.

Kyle Barton to be fair, I’m a pretty big fan of me from where I was, but I definitely strive to be healthier. That being said, there are times where I honestly eat an entire box of cereal and days where I skip the gym. It’s not even a matter of shaming, it’s a matter of corporations, stores like Target, and Hollywood acting as if being fat is just as beautiful and normal as being thin, which is absurd. Bill was 100% accurate. You don't have to be cruel re: extra weight but it's bizarre that people have become so sensitive to basic facts. Bill has no double standards. He wants to push these fake issues "Go get mad at fat people now!", but when you talk about real issues like the Israel-Palestine conflict, he sure doesn't want anybody to bring up food insecurity in Gaza or Israeli war crimes. His fake opinions about fake issues don't hold up when you look at the counterparts of those arguments in issues he ACTUALLY cares about. Here, he is "Just doing comedy". Trust me, he couldn't care less if his neighbor is overweight or not. He already says he flies private, so it's not the flight seating either. Think about it, what is he gonna say about Gaza? That they are on a healthy embargo diet? Moreover, not once on his show has he ever taken a stance that criticizes any war crimes. Instead he takes shots at Catholicism and Islam. Not once has he taken a shot at Judaism or the Right-wing governments in Israel. Yet he lies to his viewers and tells them he is a leftist in America. He is not, he just depends on that audience to get good ratings. He says let's criticize fat people again! Imagine if somebody else said "Let's bring back racism and antisemitism again". Not only did they never go away, but it is nothing more than a just an asshole that like to hear himself talk, and a buncha fanboys saying he is right about everything. Getting into the weeds is irrelevant since it is a red-herring issue. He is literally just doing his job as a comedian. That is it, pretending like this is some credible political commentary is crazy.

@@alexandrabarnes4511 there are a lot of reasons why its harder to stay at a healthy weight in America, but blaming the problem entirely on external forces perpetuates the problem too. @@noahdiluca9857 I recommend reading some weight science. There is literally *no* scientific evidence that long term (more than 5 years) weight loss is possible for the majority of people (95-97%). Most people who lose any weight regain that weight within 5 years and many end up larger than before. This leads to yo-yo dieting (aka weight cycling) which research shows is an independent risk factor for all those health issues correlated with* bigger bodies (*correlation is not causation). Another independent risk factor for these issues is...guess what? Weight stigma! Including fat shaming which is what Bill Maher was promoting. So he is recommending a behaviour which *increases* people's risk of health problems, as indeed are you, when you tell people to "take some responsibility" and lose weight.

Let me explain something... I'm an emergency medicine physician, I also have an active pituitary tumor. The pituitary tumor causes me to be overweight. Not everyone who's overweight, isn't exercising, eats to their hearts content, or has a poor diet! As for myself, that's simply untrue. I also see so many people in my work, who are affected by illness, or take needed medication which actually causes them to be moderately to significant overweight. So, let's avoid undue ignorance and forego Bill Maher's advice. Skip any shaming of another human being, for any reason, and be kind to others. You never know their struggles!

Well, sure. Nothing is 100%. How many people are overweight because of pituitary tumors? Not that many. The rate of obesity has skyrocketed in the span of one or 2 generations. It's not all genetics. Clearly, something's not right with the typical American's lifestyle.
@alexandrabarnes4511
@alexandrabarnes4511 2 жыл бұрын
@@mysticaltyger2009 that's actually more likely to be *because* of dieting! Research shows that dieting just doesn't work long term and I'm fact very often leads to people gaining *more* weight, especially after repeated diets. And no it's not because fat people don't have any willpower - it's because putting your body into what basically constitutes a famine situation causes it to send more and more signals to the brain to focus on food while also working harder to hold onto whatever food it gets. That's what also makes it harder and harder to lose weight by dieting, the more you do it. And all that can lead to the very health problems *correlated* with fatness. But don't forget, "correlation is not causation" and a huge amount of the research that claims health conditions like heart disease are "caused" by fatness do not even bother to control for other risk factors like socioeconomic status, yo-yo dieting or weight stigma, all factors that are known to be significant independent risk factors for those conditions. So if you're concerned about "ob*sity", try shaming the industries that profit from making people hate their bodies, not the people who are already suffering!

If not due to bad diet and not enough exercise (according the WHO the prime causes of obesity) 5) if due to health issues a person "stocks" caloric excesses "faster", eat less calories aka the normal required intake, regulate your caloric intake with supervision of a dietician and a medical doctor. 6) the fat acceptance movement should be relabelled the "flat-earthers of health" that are responsible for promoting life threatening lifestyles that also cause huge national debts in social security systems in many countries in the world where obesity if off the charts. 7) the body positivity movement (which should be mostly empathy towards disabled persons, due to something they are born with or happened after an accident) should be separated from the fat acceptance movement (life-threatening movement promoting eating disorders and who seek excuses for something that happened mostly in a voluntary gradual process over time and not by accident)

They both have a point, but their delivery isn't ideal. Bill Maher is right about how missguided the body positivity movement is and he's correct in saying that being overweight is unhealthy and that as much must be said unequivocally. James Corden however is correct in saying that fat shaming (if by fat shaming we mean legitimate bullying and not just saying that being overweight is bad) is often counter productive if the goal is to make people more healthy. Most of the times people aren't overweight simply because they're foodies or lazy, but because unhealthy habits are their way to cope with stress, depression or PTSD. Yes, ultimately they will need to learn more healthy ways to deal with these issues, but until then shaming them plays into the root cause of unhealthy habits. If a friend or family member has weight problems, a better way to help is to lead by example (if they are on a diet, you'd help just by refraining from fast food or beer when you're around them) and by positive encouragement for example by inviting them to play badminton or something.

@@jakefay3151 Congratulations on posting the most ignorant comment I have seen thus far on this video. There are many reasons for being overweight. Some people who have "real mental health issues", as you stated, actually gain a lot of weight because of their depression. From experience, I gained almost 100 pounds in the six years following the death of my father, whom I lost at age 15. It is not, by any means, "trivializing real mental health issues". Mental health issues arise both as a result of and causing obesity. I agree that people should do their best to exercise, eat healthy, and lose weight, but it isn't always that simple. I am 21 years old and a collegiate athlete who weighs about 270lbs. I am exceedingly active (we run and lift weights 5-6 times a week), so it's not like I'm lazy. Meh bills a prick yes fat acceptance is bad but fat shaming does nothing but make people feel terribly about themselves. The problem is as someone who was pretty damn overweight and am now in a decent place shaming people does nothing but make you feel shitty. The amount of crap I got didn't make me want to lose weight it wasn't until a nutrition class I took as a required science pre rec at college that it finally clicked and I stepped on a scale and said shit I should probably lose weight. But most people arent going to get shamed into losing weight they need to reach the pt themselves where they are ready. Not everyone will and they shouldn't be reminded of it if they aren't willing. But like I said where bill was right and Rogan is right is that fat acceptance is dangerous and bad. Good bad just let ppl be how they want.

I knew I was fat and had a whatever attitude and the more weight I lost the more I started to care about self image and its just residual from all the shit I got haha. Like it might just be me but from my experience and knowing ppl who have lost weight alot of fat ppl are in denial of being fat and until it clicks for them "if it ever does" fat shaming is just being a dick to someone for no reason. If they are happy being fat let em be happy. But like I said fat acceptance isn't good or healthy. But there are ways to say that without being a dick about it like Bill usually is.

If I stop going to the gym and start binging on junk food will gain like 10lbs if I do that for like 2 weeks. Every individual varies. Being fat isn't only about ur state of mind. Some ppl gain weight easily and if u don't have time to go to the gym daily (maybe you work and have kids) or eat healthy all the time it's really.easy to get out of control. @rima I actually did go a watch Bill's segment. And while yes, his overall message was the importance of health, he laced his message with a greenlight for fat-shaming (bullying). The idea of knocking down someone's personal value and worth because of their health isn't honorable and is a disservice to those he's trying to "help." Just look at the replies at my comment that was not directed toward anyone (except my adoration towards James) and yet 2 out of 4 people replied negatively calling me a snowflake or to stop crying. When we say it's okay to bully, the bullies come out full force. In contrast, I had a chance to visit South Korea last year and had many Koreans tell me "You should take care of your body." This wasn't offensive at all. The difference in those experiences in South Korea and Bill's Segment was the approach. Koreans who approached me didn't share their opinions out of malice and weren't trying to shame me. I can say that I've lost weight since then. I guess all I'm trying to say is that we should be inviting people to live their best lives with positive reinforcement. That way people just don't get skinny, they form life-long healthy habits and learn to have high self-esteem.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a MASTERCLASS in how to strawman your opponent's argument while simultaneously taking the moral high ground to make it seem like you're a right, true, virtuous person, while the other is rude, mean-spirited, and uninformed. You, too, can woo easily convinced people to your side on any issue and get them to believe any viewpoint, even against opponents with actual facts, statistics, and sound logic. No longer do you have to inform yourself on the issue, or even know what you're talking about. After all, informing yourself is a thing of the past! Just follow these five simple steps :) 1) Surround yourself with people who will clap and cheer for basically anything you say (like this moment here 2:57, where James admits that he's made little progress in his effort to lose weight), thus giving the illusion of mass approval of your ideas regardless of their logical consistency. 2) Instead of looking at your opponent's argument in full, pick out and isolate only a few parts of their argument that, without the context that you intentionally omit, sound much worse than they are and make them much easier for you to attack. Lie outright about the argument your opponent is making, present a caricature of their argument to your gullible audience, and then attack the caricature instead of your opponent's actual argument (classic strawman). After all, your opponent is armed with sound reasoning and actual statistics, and trying to tackle a well-built argument is hard! We don't want hard, we want easy! Finally, attempt to get ahead of criticism of this exact ploy by making a vague and indirect call to go watch the original video where your opponent makes the argument, but without providing a link to that video in your video's description and knowing full well that barely a slim fraction of your audience would ever actually see it. 3) Discuss your own struggles with the issue, act as a victim of bullying, and sprinkle in self-deprecating humor to garner further sympathy and social approval, and to show that you too struggle with the same issues as many of your own audience do, thus appearing as more relatable and further winning them over to your side despite the fact that, thanks to your wealth, you have far more options and opportunities to fix your issues than they theirs. Then leverage your self-victimization and social approval to cast your opponent as a bad person. Attempt to get ahead of criticism of this ploy by claiming that you understand that your opponent is well-intentioned, and then continue to use the aforementioned strategy. Connecting yourself with the issue, regardless of how flimsy your connection is, also comes with the benefit of making it appear as though you are qualified to speak on the matter, even if you're not (acting as if being fat qualifies you to talk about America's obesity epidemic is like saying that being a drug addict qualifies you to discuss the war on drugs). 4) Of course, in reality you know nothing of the issue and have no idea how it should be solved, but you have to make it seem like you do. How can you make yourself appear smarter on the issue your opponent if you don't offer solutions to the issue? There's an easy answer to this. Simply make brief and vague references to ideas to solve the problem; ideas that are vague enough so that you don't actually have to give any details on them, but specific enough to make it seem like you do in fact know how to solve the problem to the untrained and unobservant. Now remember, you are casting yourself and people like you as victims here, so none of these solutions could possibly have anything to do with self-responsibility. Therefore, you want to make sure that your proposed solutions have absolutely nothing to do with you or people like you actually getting up and taking action to solve your own problems. Present your solutions in a way that puts all the responsibility on others! Can't be a victim if you have any agency over the situation, right? And thus, you maintain your illusion. 5) Revel in your newfound social approval! Congratulations! You're now a good person, and everyone loves you. Even if you didn't actually help to solve the problem, let's make sure to keep in mind that it's social approval that's important here, not actually solving problems. Leave the actual bricklaying to others! Just get what you can out of the situation and go. And hey, don't forget to knock over a few bricks on your way out :) And trust me guys, this absolutely works, as absurd as it may seem. Just look at the highest upvoted comments in this comments section. And for those who actually do want to see Bill Maher's *actual* original argument, it can be found here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etNkh6SVzquqnmQ.html

In England there is a real problem of obesity especially among children who take no exercise and eat far too much and too often. @@thomasnewton8223 Perhaps Corden didn't say it in as many words, but that IS the overall message of the "body positivity" movement. "I'm perfect the way I am". I'm not unsympathetic to people struggling with addictions. I used to drink a liter of vodka everyday. But tough love is what breaks addictions. The "soft" approaches don't work; addicts just take it as a cue to continue their behavior. I am overweight, and yes, fat shaming in a form needs to come back. My sister is overweight and one of her own kids talked about her eating and drinking habits which took a lot of guts and when asked why he is saying things like that his reply was, "Because I love you and am concerned with your health." Just calling someone ugly cause your fat is one thing, but giving a 450 lb person a look for eating at an all you can eat place that need to sit one chair per cheek, or the ones that use the mobile carts at stores that are there for the OLD people. Now the infrim are walking around hanging onto carts where maybe if these overweight people would actually push a cart and walk could be a solution to their issue instead of making it worse by being even lazier. At the VERY LEAST if you say fat shaming has to go away, then so do all these fat promoting, overweight models showing, "Look how brave I am to show my fat body that most everyone is actually repulsed by, but in today woke society most will comment how good I look and adore me and it is okay to re,main this way."

@Lin K and I do, but ultimately i don't think people should be fat, being fat is mostly a willful thing, and if it's that hard for you to just exercise or eat right or something, I don't see what the harm is in a simple reminder that being fat is bad. The only objection would be that a fat person would be offended that theyre being talked to on such terms, but ultimately its the truth, and I could give a shit about their feelings.

@Emma Potter You're assuming the only reason people are fat is because they eat too much. There are genetic conditions. PCOS is one of them. I gave up pop and deserts DECADES ago. I don't sit and much on chips all day. I probably eat healthier than you do. I have done everything the nutritionist have said I should do and had them call me a liar to me face because obviously, if I had done that, I would have lost the weight, right! WRONG! People complain about guns killing people. Fat shaming kills people too. And no one who's snickering is thinking about the anorexic kids who are so afraid of being called fat for gaining a 1/2 oz. that they are destroying their bodies faster than a bag of chips and a bottle of pop a day would.

Exactly. And that's what Bill Maher is advocating for. We have to stop the nonsensical and appalling body positivity movement. If you listen to his words in the context, that's what he means by "Fat shaming doesn't need to end, it needs to make a come back". No one is saying we should make fat people's lives miserable, but we have to stop telling them it's OK to be fat, promoting obesity, criticising doctors for pointing out the obvious and enabling lazy people with terrible eating habits. And I know what I'm talking about, I was obese (I've lost 30Kg, around 66 pounds and feeling bad about my lifestyle and the consequences of my obesity was what helped me losing wait), and many members of my family are obese. The last thing we need is body positivity movement.

I’m a compulsive over eater and, like you, have been on every diet imaginable until I stopped lying to myself. “I’ll just get this package of cookies and have a couple evert day or better, I’ll have a bowl of ice cream every evening.” That is the biggest bunch of bull that ever got sold. There will never come a time when I eat two cookies if there are a dozen in the house nor will there ever come a time when I will eat half a pint of ice cream. And once I stopped lying to myself that I could I went on my last diet. I still eat cookies...I get one and take it home for dessert or I stop and get a scoop of ice cream because compulsive over eaters are satisfied with what ever is there...if it’s a scoop or a half gallon it must be finished. So honey, when you whine that fat shaming makes you go to the freezer and get a pint and eat it I have to ask....what’s it doing in your freezer? It’s there because you’re still lying to yourself that you can handle it.

For some people gaming weight is very easy but losing it very hard. I won't say I work as hard as possible but different diets that actually harm them, of course excersizing, etc. My cousin even starved herself for a really long time. Many fat people have tried desperate things to not be fat. We need actual solutions instead of bullying and misleading them with phony diets and wrong advice.

That’s hardly fair, you have no idea what he does and doesn’t do to try and control his weight.
