James Dean is one of the most iconic stars to come out of Hollywood, despite having only starred in three films. Though his filmography is small, his presence is still relevant. In honor of James Dean's passing on this day in 1955, I wanted to rank his movies from my least favorite to favorite.

James Dean starred in 4 other films but was uncredited in all of them. This video will only be his credited full-length feature films ranked.

Good to know, thank you. Perhaps you can share those with us as I am pleased to converse with a man who knows films and is educated. Few & Far between on here now...

I’ve been rewatching the crap out of Rebel Without a Cause and I really enjoyed East of Eden. I’ve yet to watch Giant but I like your list here despite the minimal amount. Can’t believe James Dean died 66 years ago today

Thank you so much! And yeah, I can't believe it either. I'd like to visit his crash site someday. Sometimes I wonder what more we would've seen from him had he not passed so early.

I heard that he wanted to direct film. Like he planned a small acting career and just focus on making movies. Would’ve been interesting what kind of movies he would’ve made. Also I’m gonna comment, you and grandpa look alike :)

Giant is a very important film as his persona is very powerful in this film. His confidence and demeanor here is also quite different I think. He just blows you off the screen when he enters the scene! If you have seen his other films and then it is time to watch this. His character evolution is in full effect here.

I love that so much. Do you change up the costume, or just simply wear the white shirt and red coat every year? HAHA

oh my god, that IMDb description for East of Eden is terrible! Who wrote that?! I don't even know where to begin here. James Dean is one of my favorite actors and has been for.... ew, a decade! oh my gosh, where is time going!?! I'm definitely past my peak James Dean obsession, but he's still so significant to me. He was someone whose work I wanted to get into, along with Marilyn and Audrey, because I had heard all their names before but wasn't familiar with who they were- as actors nor as people. Rebel Without A Cause was the first film of his I watched and it's still one of my favorite films! I saw it when I was in high school, which is I think the best time to watch it for the first time. Of course now I pick up more on subtext, and knowing more about the lead actors it's a little hard to watch (which I've mentioned to you before). I really think it's timeless in a way where it will always be relatable for teens and young adults. So, if I were ranking his 3 feature films, Rebel would be number 1. In second place would be Giant. This felt really long the first time I watched it, but on rewatches I notice the runtime less and enjoy the film more. The casting overall is fantastic. I don't even really care about the story all that much but I am interested in seeing the relations of the characters. I don't think of it as a western, which it gets categorized as sometimes, because it's so character driven and melodramatic. It's also amazing seeing James Dean in a story that takes up more time and therefore the characters age more. To me he is so unrecognizable as a 24-year-old when he's playing older Jett. And then that leaves East of Eden in the third ranking. This one is hard for me think of on its own. East of Eden by John Steinbeck is one of my favorite books! And I was really looking forward to watching the film because of that but also because Cal is my favorite character in the book. And I can't picture another actor as Cal! But the film is 1/3 of the book. I'm not sure how familiar you are with it but it's essentially the life of Adam Trask. He's the main character with alternating/rotating side characters. Yes, I would say Cal and Aron take a bit more focus in the last third of the book, which is also the only part of the book they're really in because that's when they're born (lol), but Adam is center of the story throughout. And this means the film has noticeable/structural differences because (1) the teens are more so the main characters in the film and (2) in the book you already know their situation whereas there's mystery to an extent in the film surrounding their birth and father's history. East of Eden is not a bad film at all AND it's probably better for only being 1/3 of the book instead of trying to shove the entire novel into one movie, but to me it does feel like it's lacking with certain details and depth that could be there. Also, sorry if I repeated anything that I've already told you. I'm pretty sure when you said you were going to do this video I decided I would just leave a longer comment going into my thoughts on his films here instead of your announcement video or anywhere else you mentioned it. But I'm kind of second guessing myself. OH AND I really like the added b&w and static edits with your outro.

Bailee!! I LOVE your comments! Keep them coming, lol! It was great hearing your thoughts on each movie. It's funny you mention the book East of Eden because just recently I thought it'd be cool to read it, but I had no idea how different the adaptation was, so that's good to know going into it! And thank you for the outro comment!!

@@maplestreetmovies The book is great!! It'll definitely be an interesting experience reading it after seeing the film. I would love for a full miniseries adaptation of it to happen and I think there was _something_ in development years ago but idk what happened. :)

Awesome man! I kind of want to read East of Eden and then rewatch the movie. I don't know that it'll ever beat Rebel, but I feel like I'll like the movie even more on a rewatch.
