My north-facing front yard garden takes a beating in the winter and I needed a climbing rose that could handle it without requiring a lot of work to carry it through the winter. I had the chance to chat with Michael Marriott before he retired from David Austin Roses a few years back. Michael is a world-renowned rosarian and has designed rose gardens all over the world. If anyone's going to know what climbing rose will work in my conditions, it's going to be Michael!
He recommended the James Galway climbing rose from David Austin and I'm thrilled with how it's performed in what I consider to be a difficult situation. I don't have drip irrigation and my roses only receive a bit of hand watering during drought conditions. They'd likely be even better if I doted a bit more but that's not going to happen.
Let me show you just how well these climbing roses have done for this tough-love gardener...

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

Thank you for your information! I am trying beneficial nematodes both fall & spring- we will see how any bugs fare from them.😊

Beautiful!💗! Thanks for info, Heather. Not having, but I had a Terrible case of Boxelders this year. I tried and tried spraying. They took over. Billions I swear. All over my large tree out back and All shrubs. I only 🙏 all shrubs come back next year, Healthy. Such A Bummer.

Aw Gina, that's a shame! I've never had issues with box elders. My issues always involve furry critters. Rabbits are my nemesis!

It’s a beautiful rose! This is the second time I’ve heard of thrips(sp). Laura at Garden Answer had them this year and she had beneficial bugs dropped from a drone to eradicate the thrips in her garden.

Wow! Fortunately my issue doesn't require a drone drop! I may have to release beneficials next spring if it continues. I didn't check on them often enough which is why I think they took over all the buds. I would have eliminated the buds as soon as I saw signs. I'll be more vigilant next year.

I’m so excited to find another cold weather rose gardener! I’m in Madison, WI. And have 20 David Austin rises next spring. Anyway, how did you treat for Thrips?

Hi Nicole! What a rose display you’ll have! After this last experience, I would say keen daily observation is my first defense. Once I see signs of thrip damage - browning petal edges on buds, disfigured buds - I remove the buds right away to prevent the pupa from dropping to the soil and perpetuating the cycle. I don’t use systemics out of concern for the well-being of pollinators. I bet you can’t wait to see your rose show next year!

How do you protect them in the winter? Do you cover them with anything? How much cane dieback do you usually get?

I don't do anything with the James Galway. They're very cold hardy and I've never been a fan of styrofoam cones. With my Munstead Wood rose which is a little more delicate I mulch with leaves. Dieback is minimal on the James Galway due in large part to right plant right place. It's a very exposed area so I chose a rose that could take a cold northwest exposure.
