00:00 | 'Go on. You hop on your moped.'
James O'Brien ruminates on the suggestion from Conservative MP Mel Stride that hard-up over-50s should deliver takeaways to maintain their standard of living.
09:50 | 'If I was a Deliveroo driver it would probably get in the way of me finding prospective paid jobs.'
Caller Andrea believes politicians are 'not understanding' what it's like to be unemployed like her.
13:07 | 'I'm 70 and I've been riding for Uber Eats for 4 years.'
Caller Mike thinks food delivery jobs for over-50s might not be a bad suggestion.

I dislike the Tories but on the flip side, it was Labour who introduced benefit sanctions and penilsed people on benefits under the New Deal Scheme. Labour sent people on 21 week "training courses" where they would work for free for multi billion corporations like Argos.

This isn't going to be a popular statement but the problem is, the entire time your generation have been working you've not been paying enough NI to support the state pension. For years successive governments have known that the NI rates weren't sufficient to fund retirement, but no one dared to put it up by enough to fund it because people kept voting for short termism and governments that promised low taxes. People in their 50's and 60's have had the the advantage throughout their working life of not paying enough into the system to support it, but now that they are getting close to retirement they want the system to support them, basically passing the bill onto younger generations. You can't have it both ways. You either support a low tax, low support system or you support a high tax high support system. What you can't do is support a low tax, low support system while you are working and then expect it to switch once you retire.

Honestly, do you think a person who does strenuous physical labour for 30-plus years will likely be able to ride a bike for hours at a time delivering food during their golden years? Mr. Smith arrives at work, let's call him by his first name, Winston arrives at work for his first shift. They explain to him that he is paid by the delivery so he needs to pedal as fast as he can. After four hours Winston is dripping in sweat, desperately trying to feed his family so he soldiers on, pedalling like mad trying to earn enough to pay the bills and feed the kids. After seven hour he is exhausted, he feels like an elephant is sitting on his chest, he sits on the kerb and a kind stranger asks if he is OK. Winston collapses with a heart attack and the stranger calls an ambulance. After two hours waiting for the ambulance Winston Smith is no more. His last thought was who is going to feed his children? As a 50 something librarian ( hundreds of libraries were closed down by Cameron Coalition) looking for work right now. Its a real conundrum. I don't have much savings, I'm faced with a grossly inflated rent, non affordable housing, and a small local authority pension to look forward to. Happy days. My cooking and shopping skills are sound , I'm thankfully healthy & active thankyou very much. Fear for my life even crossing these roads, never mind scooting around on a bike or moped. During the 2008 Great Recession my newly retired husband, a West Point graduate and 30 yr Colonel found a job in the produce department of our local grocery store. At first he was humiliated then found he LOVED working with patrons. He took pride in his work. I also took a job as a hotel maid in Waikiki (I’m an MD who was laid off.) We did fine. Used public transportation, stopped buying junk, ate fewer meals. Are in better shape and happier than we have ever been.

The reason over 50,s are struggling us because they have been taxed into poverty
@jeff4907
@jeff4907 9 ай бұрын
The reason the over 50's are struggling is that they haven't paid enough tax. The UK tax rate is consistently below the average for OECD countries and this has resulted in the support systems that people rely on in times of need, or as they get older, being inadequate or non-existent. You can't underpay on taxes for 40 years and expect the system to be there for you when you need it. I know everyone feels like they pay too much tax but the facts are that UK residents, on average, pay less tax than residents of similar countries.

I'm an American. I feel for my transatlantic cousins going through more or less the same dire situation as many of us here are doing (I'm retired, but struggling on the social security (= UK state pension) payment. Even though I get 2X the average social security recipient --due to the way higher incomes qualify here- I'm tapping into my meager savings fast due to inflation. This global 'capitalism' is reaching its natural end, and I'm glad I wont be around to see its inevitable Mad Max world consequences. And for all the conservatives (read Republicans in the US), remember, FDR (a member of elite society) was the President who recognized this fact during the depression... his 'New Deal' saved capitalism, even though he was vilified by his own class/party at the time. Subsequent US administrations (including the Democrats) have been dismantleing the it for the last 80 years. This is an age of serf-dom, but this time at least we have the internet and social media to control us instead of the Lord's thugs. smh

When polititians crow how much they are doing to help people back into work what they mean is they are doing all they can to remove choice even if you are ill, disabled, struggling mentally or just old. Meanwhile they game the system with unearned income, expense claims, tax breaks and back handers.

Genius!! It was only the Tories themselves, so detached from 'normality', that they made these sudden discoveries. Everybody else is totally aware of what money saving, job options are available to them. Only someone who has never had to worry about these things would stop and have a little think and come up with these 'revelations'. The lesson here is that rich, privileged people should not be in politics because they have no idea what real world problems face real people on a daily basis.
