James Brown performs "Please Please Please" to a live audience on the TAMI Show.
"Please, Please, Please" was written by James Brown and Johnny Terry and released as a single on Federal Records in 1956, it charted #6 R&B. It was the group's debut recording and first chart hit, and became their signature song.
The TAMI Show is a 1964 concert that included performances by numerous popular rock and roll and R&B musicians from the United States and England. TAMI stood for both "Teenage Awards Music International" and "Teen Age Music International". The concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964. Free tickets were distributed to local high school students. The best footage from each of the two concert dates was edited into the film, which was released on December 29, 1964. The TAMI Show is particularly well known for James Brown's performance featuring his legendary dance moves and explosive energy.

In addition to James, there is so much happening on that stage. The three back-up singers that are absolutely KILLING it, the guitarist with a guitar twice as big as he is, the drummer never losing James once during the song, and the bassist just grooving. Amazing stuff.

Those "Three Backup Singers" are *THE FAMOUS FLAMES* , James Brown's original Singing group. James Brown first began his career in the early 1950's as a MEMBER of The FAMOUS FLAMES...and he was a Famous Flame TOO. JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES were all ONE GROUP. The other members were: *BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT, & LLOYD STALLWORTH*. THE FAMOUS FLAMES sang on many hit records with James...and in 2012, they joined him into THE ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME. *BUT...most young people today are too YOUNG to remember THE FLAMES, so they ONLY credit JAMES BROWN* . All they know about is James, Maceo, and "Da Funk". They need to brush up on their *MUSIC HISTORY* facebook.com/thefamousflamesbysandibennett/

I was 16 when I saw James perform Please, Please, Please at the Howard Theatre in 1965. I was ready to run away from home that night. I was hooked every since. I saw James 33 times in my lifetime and I finally got a chance to meet him in California during the Blues Brothers 25 Year Anniversary and got his autograph. I met James, Henry, Napier and others. Got the hat, and the sunglasses and I still have them to this day. No one performed, they just sat in front of the stage and told stories about how The Blues Brothers movie was made. What a performer, James was. RIP.

TRUE STORY: I was born in El Paso Texas in 1956. In the early 60s my mom and I were made to ride in the back of the bus because we were Hispanic. That's where I fell in love with Arithea Franklin, James Brown, Otis Redding etc etc, because a lot of black people played their Motorola transistor radios and just jammed in the back of the bus. One day I heard Please Please, and it pierced my heart as one of the most beautiful and exciting songs I've ever heard... About a week later James Brown came on Black & White TV and played Please Please... When he started to sing I was so excited as I've never seen what James looked like, let alone singing live. On the black & white TV his sweat on his face glistened along with the sequenced coat. But when he started singing I started to get real scared because I've never seen a singer get so angry tossing the mike around, and his Back Ground singers kept putting on the cape, and suddenly tossed it off his back and started yelling/singing at the top of his lungs. I got so scared I started yelling for my mom, but the Sh!t hit the fan every time he got on his knees and tossed off his cape in anger.. I was in total fear saying "What Is Wrong With Him"!!! Mom!!! It looks like he is going to kill someone!!! Mom how can someone do such a thing on TV, how do they allow it to be so scary... For months I had nightmares. It took me a while to understand it was all an act... To this day I remember it like it was yesterday, and I love James Brown, especially Please Please. Back then I was such an innocent child. ( :

One of the greatest performances in the history of entertainment. So soulful. Half the time he is hardly even singing into the mic, yet he communicates so powerfully you understand his message intuitively. A piece of genius. I don't know what you were looking at, but the raw emotions expended in this performance is OSCAR award worthy and has never been matched since without some other artist attempting to copy what James Brown did here live unrehearsed. I was front row centerstage Blackham Coliseum, Lafayette LA 1968 USL, a fraternity boy when James did Please Please Please for the number one party school in the nation, USL. Blackham was an unairconditioned livestock arena, portable floor and stage. We were all on our feet as James repeatedly broke away from his backup singers, throw off his capes, to run back on stage and slide on his knees to the footlights. His sweat flying in our faces. I have never seen a better showman. He was magic. I'm 73 years old, now. I had no idea how lucky I was that night.

I have to confess, I'd never seen this James Brown performance, wasn't aware of it, or the song, until about 20 minutes ago when I was reading about record producer 'Ralph Bass'. Bass's Wiki page mentions this James Brown performance and, naturally, I had to see what all the fuss was about. I am so very glad I found the video as it has enlightened and nourished me. Having read your comment, I searched for Danny and realised how important this whole event was to so many people and so many generations. I need to watch this video again - it's incredible.
