Dude just Listen to the Whole Made in Japan Live Album. It is considered by millions to be the best Live Album in a time of Epic Live Albums. Highway Star, Child in time, Smoke in the Water, The Mule, Lazy., Strange K8nd of Woman and Space Trucking. The album is just like it was played. No Studio Enhancements in any way. I have listened to it for 48 years and it still sounds as good as it did when I was 11 years old.

They say this song is based on a true story, a friend of theirs spent a lot of time and money trying to get this girl and she died days after they got married

This is how they always performed the song live back in their heyday. the best version of it is on the live made in Japan album listen to it and you’ll get the whole song with this in the middle. this one is excellent as well.. too bad it’s not the whole song..

This video actually starts on third verse. It’s missing the first half. The best version of this song is on Made in Japan album.

I like to add another comment..this concert is from Hofstra university Long Island N.Y. 1973 it’s from the same concert of their song space trucken that you reacted to a few days ago there is also another song from this concert that’s from a live DVD.. of course it’s smoke on the water all songs were edited to fit into a half hour program called in concert that was on abc tv in the early 70s they filmed the whole show but they cut it down to 30 minutes to fit into a half hour time slot. Unfortunately the rest of the show doesn’t exist this was a common practice back then.

You are absolutely right; they were just messing around with this song. It's kind of a shame that someone suggested this version became you've actually never really heard the song. The studio version is very, very different. But, I guess the good thing about this performance is just to see how versatile they are as musicians.

You are right - it is improvisation and Ian Gillan is funny guy, but right now he is sad because he decided to leave a group.

This is a TV edit of a much longer performance, so the main part of the song has been cut out. Gillan (singer) had already given notice he was quitting the band, and he and Blackmore (guitar) were no longer on speaking terms. Ian Gillan went on to lead successful bands under his own name, plus a short stint in Black Sabbath, before rejoining Deep Purple in 1984.

No first verse and the great intro to the song isn’t there, anyway, Gillan is a great front man. This is my favorite Deep Purple song
