I planted two cherries last year. One got 20 flowers, and one got a SINGLE flower. I used a paint brush to cross pollinate from the single flower and it resulted in THREE cherries (almost ripe now). I have never been more excited over three cherries.

We lost our fig tree due to the soil being saturated from Tropical storm Hillary and it was as so full of fruit. We decided on a cherry tree. It has five varieties grafted in. Thinking about four years til fruit is just exasperating. Lol. You gave me a bit of hope.

I got some cherries from the store, several times 6 years ago. I saved all the seeds and went to the long process, of putting them in the freezer, bringing them out after 3 months, cracking them open , soaking the seeds in peroxide and water. And planting them I now have over 29 cherry trees, also three apricot trees. And five avocado tree. I really enjoyed growing trees, from seeds.

That's so awesome!!! James is a great resource. His library of videos is inspiring. It will take a little time for your mulch to break down, so you may want to put down an underlayer of compost. At least that's what I've done when I've started with fresh wood chips like that. I get my compost for cheap from the local department of public works. I don't know if you have anything like that, but it's worth looking!

Thanks to you and back to eden I'm on my third year growing my food forest. Over 30 fruit trees and just had heavy equipment up yesterday ro clear more space to double our food forest close to an acre. I cant thank you enough James. Going to start documenting our journey to see how it evolves. Been with you since before you built your greenhouse and want you to know how much of an inspiration you have been for us to not only create a food forest but also build a geothermal greenhouse for tropicals in zone 5b. I planted two combo cherry trees 1 month ago and already see the rainer, black tartarion, and north star (sour cherry) branches baring fruit. I know that it's best to remove fruit on the first few years to let them just concentrate on growing. But man it's exciting getting my first fruit already. My peaches, likewise, are also growing fuzzy orbs that I assume are peaches. I'm new to all of this so I'm so excited to see things happen.

@@Ripleyripper Cool! I have a tart cherry tree, strawberries, blackberries, boysenberries and raspberries. I also have two huge mulberry trees, one white and one purple. The birds will peck at a few of the cherries in the top of the tree, but mostly leave everything alone. I do hope this works for you as well. There is also a spray, I believe, that you can spray on the tree that tastes bad to the birds.
@karlsfoodforestgarden6963
@karlsfoodforestgarden6963 3 жыл бұрын
But you will also get some added cross-pollination from the nearby trees. One of my friends hangs rubber snakes from his fruit trees. I wonder if that would work? My trees don't get much bird pressure, but they do get some. Still, with a healthy tree you will probably still have a lot of cherries for yourself.

I had a mature Benton and took it out. North VA here 7a. After years of watching brown rot ruin the entire crop, it finally got some kind of blight that went deep into the wood. I just gave up. One year I got some kind of black leaf disease that defoliated the entire tree later in the summer/fall. Oh and the Japanese beetles love this thing more than anything in a ten mile radius. Hopefully some of you all have better luck in the South with these.

Don't forget that the tart cherries have great medicinal value 😉 What variety of yellow cherry do you have! We acquired a "Governor Wood Yellow Cherry" this year. Also a Montmorency Medicinal Tart 😉 As a child, my parents rented a home in Utah (early 70's).... That is the very first time I experienced a cherry tree / fell in love of them (a massive 🍒🌳 was in the yard). 😍 Happy Gardening!!!!!

I have both veggies and fruit. I have to say, it's really great to plant a few things (like cherry trees) that you don't have to replant every year! 😀

Those cherries look delicious 😋 They remind me of my childhood in Washington state, when we, my 3 siblings and neighborhood kids, would climb the local cherry trees to have a delicious treat. 🙂
