Hey James. I grow a couple variety of hazelnuts and discovered I can pick them green (almost ripened) before the squirrels go after them. They ripen and pop out after picked in the greenhouse where they are safe from those clever squirrels. Best wishes to you. The apples and grapes look delicious. I want to try oranges. Hazelnuts: someone I know leaves a five-gallon bucket out near the tree, and the squirrels put them in the bucket to save them. he then swaps them at some point, putting corn in the bucket instead. You could probably do the same using acorns or whatever you have that they can still use in the winter

IMO you have the loveliest garden. Your work over the years has paid you back 10 fold. Even with the "problems" you have had a great bounty for your work. And your 11 year old pup is a great boy and companion for you. You also have one of the best attitudes of anyone on KZfaq! Thank you for posting and being so uplifting!

You mentioned that you were having trouble with birds getting the new pea seeds sprouting. The best solution to protect the newly planting of seeds is to stretch a string slightly above the row. Birds will not bother the seeds or the sprouts .

I have heard that spraying the ripening Hazelnuts with Cayenne pepper solution is an effective anti Squirrel strategy. They hate the stuff, it is said. Love your work. Always an uplifting experience to watch this channel.

My family comes from an area where 70% of the world's hazelnuts are produced. All the trees are about 5 feet tall to control the factors like pollination and pest control. Your large hazelnut tree is beautiful, but I would consider trying to keep some smaller to better cover them from squirrels

I had a problem with rabbits and deer by me. Someone recommended placing Irish Spring soap around the perimeter and near areas the deer like. It worked amazingly, you can try this with squirrels too.

Hazelnuts- my friends have the same problem with their trees and squirrels, even to the point where they pick them early just before they are ripe and then let them ripen inside. Or you can section off the lower portions and surround those branches with netting to keep the squirrels out (if they don’t chew the netting!), and then they have access to All the upper limbs that are hard to reach for you.

I used red fox urine in my attic to keep squirrels out with great success. I'd imagine it would work in the garden too.

I can totally relate to this! This is what happened to me; Imagine planting up your garden for the summer with approximately 30 variety's of different crops and the tomatoes and capsicum were now setting fruit and it was all protected behind a 1.8m high shade / wind cloth fence. Now imagine going to check on your plants only to find that most of the plants had now been eaten off to the ground by rabbits which had burrowed under the fence. I was not amused! You have a great garden by the way.

The last point you made about what you become really put the bow on the gift of this video IMO. I planted my first deer food plots this past fall and am currently in the process of experimenting on some old apple trees and planning our first family vegetable garden with our toddlers. Nothing has produced tremendously well yet, but the learning never stops.

But my actual favorite thing about this vid is how lovingly you let oh-so adorable Tuck not only participate in taste-testing the garden yields, but also accept that he's probably more interested in the acquisition of a new toy to bury, and that it's all good. I don't think there's anything you can do for this year's Hazelnut harvest, but at the end of the season, definitely prune the tree back hard, throw netting over it, and hang bits of Irish Spring soap on the netting. Pretty much ALL critters hate the smell of it. The rest of your food forest looks wonderful though and I'm glad you're so successful with it!

Sorry to hear about the hazelnuts. I am not growing any nut trees in my yard, but I do have a few suggestions. 1. How do you feel about a hard prune? Right now, the trees are so tall that they can't really be protected. If you can cut them back and maintain the trees at about 8 feet of height, you can use one of the Plant Jackets from Agfabric to protect your nut trees. I use them to protect my avocado tree that I'm growing in Zone 8a, and they work well for winter protection. Squirrels may tear through the plant jacket, so you may want to throw bird netting on top of the plant jacket. 2. You can try placing bird seed feeders all over your garden. While squirrels are amazing acrobats, they're lazy. If you provide them an easier source of high calorie, nutrient dense seeds, they may leave your nuts alone. 3. If you plant future nut trees, I suggest looking into growing them as espalier low cordons. Birds and squirrels do not feel safe in fruit trees that are low to the ground, because it leaves them exposed to predators. The reason why squirrels love your hazelnut trees is they are so tall that they feel safe being up so high. Anything you can do to lower those trees and provide the squirrels a "distraction source" of food can go a long way to protect them, but it would take a pretty big commitment to cutting them back so hard.

Love the Tuck, you do a good job, I enjoy your channel. When watching I always think of one of my favorite life mottos: nothing great happens without enthusiasm.

I lost all of my corn to squirrels, it was frustrating but they are just trying to survive. Your garden is really inspiring!

My first garden was in a yard of a house I was flipping. Every time a tomatoe would start to ripen , it would disappear. I finally realized that the house was surrounded by apartments and people could look down and see my lovely tomatoes. When I figured it out I yanked them out and ripened the last ones in a box. Pissed me off !

PS: My neighbors thought me crazy when I took delivery of 2 arborer truck loads. It was so fun to move and shape.

Set up a designated "squirrel feeding station". Put out peanuts and sunflower seeds every day. I would even plant a hazelnut tree just for them since they are partial to it. Years ago, I started feeding the raccoons because they were getting into my garbage. I started putting out sunflower seeds for them, and I never had a problem with them in my garbage again. I also have a designated feeding station for the squirrels. They love the peanuts and sunflower seeds!

I totally understand your frustration with the squirrels. They got my sweet corn, and I have found parts of tomatoes in the tree at eye level.

I would net a few branches so that you get some of the nuts. This is nature though & the nature of gardening. I lost an entire variety of grapes to the little critters & it would have been my first harvest, so I still don’t know what the variety will taste like. James, I guess we’ll just have to wait until next year!
