Another important addition: the diversity in Percy Jackson and its spinoffs is actually textual, and not just retcons like JK Rowling does. Even if you don't find diversity important, you have to admit it's admirable to actually include, for example, a gay character in your book and then deal with what that means as opposed to confirming it AFTER the books are done when you easily could have put it in the text

They live in different moral than normal human, and selly has becoke part of it. Karma is real, if it was in mythologic world, gabe would get his karma soon or later. Percy see it as to punish evil human, and let her mother live in peace. He see it as to protect himself and his mom. When he's on adventure and probably would never comeback doing some dangerous quest his mother would be alone with bastard gabe. I would do the same tho, i will take my punishment from making him vanish later - that maybe what percy thought. Selly also become part of peecy's world as well. Though at first she againts the idea, but she also knew things like this happen in the ancient times when we as human can gave punishment to another human who is evil. She take the chance. Completely agree with you on everything, except for your point on Percy and Annabeth. I think they're handled very well, better than Ginny and Harry. Their development feels healthy and realistic, and not out of place. Percy's feelings subtly grow for Annabeth throughout the books, and it's entertaining to see him unknowingly develop these feelings for her. It feels rewarding when she kisses him in the fourth book, and you genuinely believe that they'd die for each other. Heroes of Olympus expands on their relationship in a really great way, and they've become one of my favorite couples in fictional media in general. I understand the weird incest thing, but they clarify that they don't share DNA, and that godly heredity does not work in the same way that human heredity does. You can see in both camp half blood and camp jupiter, it's not taboo for demigods of different godly parents to date each other.
@fie973 жыл бұрын
They explain about the dating between cousin things in the first book actually? Don't you think so? As long as i remember they have told us in the first book, that god don't have dna, and demigod can date each other, despite their brother/sister from same house. It told that no one would date or even think about their brother/sister in the same house as an atractive figure bcs that is disgusting. But they don't have any connection between another demigod from another house so that's fine.

People always talk about the Percy Jackson Series when praising Rick Riordan, but personally, the Kane Chronicles series is what got me into his books. The unique factor that everything in the three books is a recording and sometimes Carter or Sadie pops in with a sarcastic comment when the other sibling is narrating is so amusing. I love both PJO and KC so the fact that Riordan made a trilogy crossover like the legend that he is, made me happy. I haven't read Magnus Chase yet because I am broke as hell and I haven't been able to buy yet and I refuse to read online and not in a book.

@eatcheesekobe4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you're comparing it. If it's the movie Harry and Hermione then I agree, it was very awkward. However, the book does 10x better job so I'll have to disagree there. The main reason a lot of people ship Harry and Hermione is because they like Daniel and Emma together, but Hermione was never meant to be as good looking as Emma.

I liked Ginney and Harry a lot in the books they were terrible in the film
@rev05683 жыл бұрын
@@jacobgrimstad7423 I can't say I do. It may be because I never finished the books, as for whatever reason Percy Jackson and Co hooked me in a way Harry Potter. Couldn't, but I wasn't a fan of the pairing. Harry and his best friends fangirl younger sister, at least that's how it starts and they don't really have much of a friendship till later. Annabeth and Percy, on the other hand, have a slight rivalry due to their parentage, and Annabeths own flaws with pride and her sort of know it all attitude, while Percy was hurt due to how he was introduced to the Greek world and how rash he could be. Over the course of five books with a lot of bumps in the road they develop a relationship I'd been waiting for since book 3, suspecting since book 2, and happy with throughout book 5 and onwards. And there's some parallels you can make, but even then they feel more meaningful for PJO. For example, in Chamber of Secrets, Harry goes to kill the basilisk and rescue Ginny from its clutches, due to her being his best friends little sister and simply because it was the right thing to do. Percy goes on a quest to rescue Artemis from the titans, but his main reason for going is saving Annabeth, his best friend who he refuses to give up on. The entire point of the quest for him is to save her, going so far as to put aside his own pride and hold the sky so Artemis can fight and keep all his friends alive. I'm not saying Ginny and Harry is BAD, I'm just saying I prefer Percy and Annabeth in every single way.

I think you misunderstand 2 things: One, at the end of the day Harry relies on the institution and it's rebuilt pretty much identically, it's not the institution that is bad as a system, but the people in it in Rowling's world. Two, Percy Jackson's story is less about institution and more about family and neglet. Every main character has a broken family, and what Percy does in the end is fix it by forcing the older generation to respect the new one. One of the reasons I love Percy Jackson more than Harry Potter is that Percy Jackson is a lot more relatable. Since Percy Jackson is in the 1st person, it makes you grow a lot more close to Percy and gives you a new take on things. As Harry Potter is in the 3rd person, it sometimes makes you question Harry's decisions (like when Harry took a break on Harry and Ginny's relationship).

Something I liked much better in Percy Jackson is that there were stakes in the form of the audience having mortal characters that we are supposed to care about. For instance Sally Jackson, Rachel Dare, etc. There’s even a line in Magnus Chase saying how they had to prevent Ragnarok for people like Estelle (Percy’s little sister) to have a life, In Harry Potter the only Muggle characters are the Dursley’s and they were terrible people anyway so the audience never really cared what happened to them.

Moses exists too: he's the only non-member to ever defeat a member of the House of Life in a duel. Then there's spin-off series by other authors like Storm Runner and Aru Shah, which don't technically take place in the same universe but some of the series are similar enough that I sort of clump them (the latter is Hindu-based, but includes Greek and Irish mythology in the first book alone). At this point, I basically figure all religions, ancient and modern, are to some degree true in the Riordanverse.

@byakuyatogamistumblr59584 жыл бұрын
Another difference: Characters in the Riordanverse have different abilities (Percy with water, Jason with air, Nico with angst) This makes the characters mach more diverse and exciting, needing to strategize when keeping their abilities in mind when deducing advantages and disadvantages. It overall makes the combat much more exciting. In the Harry Potter universe, almost any wizard can use the exact same abilities, which means that you could swap out two people in a fight, and it would barely make a difference, as they have the same abilities. These make combat scenes much more dull, especially with the overuse of certain elements, and not as many true threats of character death, as we know that Rowling would never kill off a member of the golden trio, but we know for a fact the Riordan will easily kill off one of the seven.
@korialogo4 жыл бұрын
_Cyrusis _ It also places the characters on a more even scale for power; it’s harder to compare them. In HP, yes, they do address that one can be better at certain forms of magic than others, mostly thinking and feeling, but that’s close to where it ends. It’s just “This is the brightest witch of her age, this is the chosen one, and this is the control group- er, I mean, the other friend.” Don’t get me wrong, Ron’s powerful when it counts, but throughout the series, Ron is generally made out to be less powerful than Hermione, the “smart one,” and Harry, the “chosen one.” In PJO, though, despite the presence of the Big Three and the minor deities, they’re all spread out enough that there’s no clear answer to who is more powerful. Is Percy most powerful? I mean, he can control water and breathe underwater. But Nico can raise the dead! Thalia could live forever, and her brother can fly. Piper can basically mind control, Leo is a natural pyromaniac (capable of awesome machinery stuff), Frank can shapeshift, Annabeth is a remarkable strategist... Hazel can literally alter the mist, the very world and the way that they view it; the list goes on, and the difference in abilities shows everyone’s necessity and uniqueness, making it nearly impossible to put one over another in the rank of “Who is most important.” It makes it interesting, and it’s just really cool. Better relates to human strength, as people can be strong in different ways. I just really like it. Sorry for the vent and thanks for reading.

My favorite part of PJO is that you can actually understand why Luke is the way he is. You can actually see why he’s so bitter, and it makes sense how Kronos was able to manipulate him. The fact that pretty much everyone actually agrees with him adds a whole new dynamic to the plot. The only reason they’re fighting against Luke is because if Kronos wins, the world will end. In Harry Potter’s case, the bad guys are bad because of classism and power, so it’s really easy to dehumanize them. Luke is a whole person who was turned evil by unfortunate circumstances. Lucius Malfoy is just a cunt. (Though I’ll admit Rowling did a pretty good job on Draco but that’s not the point) I also like how Percy as a character is so morally gray. In HOO, he actually reflects on how he’s starting to think like Luke, being bitter towards the gods for messing up his life. More than that, we actually got to see a super dark side of him in House of Hades. Harry, on the other hand, is a bit of a saint. Yeah, he started to get irritable because of the horcruxes, but we never got to see him snap. We all know that there’s no real chance of Harry Potter going off the rails. Percy though? He’s actually dangerous. He has motive to destroy the gods, and he probably has the power too(I think it’s mentioned somewhere that he makes the gods nervous because of how powerful he is) Edit: spelling
