In this iconic scene from the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma," we see the talented Jane Fairfax (played by Amber Anderson) enchanting the audience with her beautiful piano playing. Set in the elegant surroundings of the Knightley family home, the scene captures the grace and refinement of Regency-era England, as Jane's delicate fingers dance across the keys, filling the room with the sweet strains of a classic piece. But as Emma (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) looks on, she can sense that there is something more to Jane's music than mere entertainment - there is a depth of feeling that speaks to the heart. As the camera lingers on Jane's face, we see the emotion and vulnerability that lie beneath her composed exterior, and we begin to understand why she is such a captivating figure to those around her. Don't miss this unforgettable moment in one of Austen's most beloved novels, brought to life with all the elegance and charm of a bygone era.
FACTS FORM THE NOVEL:
In the novel "Emma" by Jane Austen, Jane Fairfax is a talented and accomplished young woman who becomes a source of fascination for the protagonist, Emma Woodhouse. One of the most memorable scenes involving Jane Fairfax in the novel is the piano scene, which takes place during a visit to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Knightley.
In this scene, Emma and the other guests gather around the piano to listen to Jane Fairfax play. Emma is struck by the beauty and skill of Jane's playing, but she also feels a sense of jealousy and resentment towards her. Emma is used to being the center of attention and the most talented person in the room, but Jane's superior piano playing reminds her that there are others who are just as accomplished and talented as she is.
As Jane continues to play, Emma becomes increasingly uncomfortable and starts to feel self-conscious. She begins to realize that her own talents are not as impressive as she once thought, and that there are other people who are more skilled and accomplished than she is. This realization is a turning point for Emma, and it marks the beginning of her growth and development as a character.
Overall, the piano scene involving Jane Fairfax is a pivotal moment in the novel "Emma," as it highlights the themes of jealousy, self-awareness, and personal growth.

The funny thing is that in any other book Jane would be the protagonist and Emma the antagonist

I love how proud is Mr Knightley of Jane here without being seriously interested in her. He is just being nice. In a good way, not in a fake way. And he is genuinely happy for Jane´s happiness. Shows that he is a good man. Emma didn´t deserve him.

My take was more that, while he is kind to Jane, he liked that she showed Emma up. Not in a mean sense but in a case of he loves her even knowing all her faults but that doesn't mean he doesn't want her to grow as a person and he knows its good for her - its why he comes straight over to teasingly call her out. He loves her faults and all, but he loves her enough to want her to be better than her faults, hence the 'badly done Emma' later on. Also, while they haven't quite worked out they like each other yet, knocking each other off balance seems to be their version of (subconscious) flirting

Mozart! I always loved this sonata and I like how it is presented here as so stunning and shocking. Too often Mozart is seen as gentle and relaxing. His music is so powerful. Also I like this film for including actual music that would have been played in Jane Austen's era. Bravo all around!

What a brilliant idea! Instead of more remakes of the same old story, to see it from another character's perspective. So much potential for nuance and storytelling in these classics, I'd love to see that! So often a side character/story is the one that interests us the most.

I love the surprised look Jane gives when Emma improvises. I think Knightly comments kindly to Emma (in the book? Maybe in the movie?) when she feels overshadowed, that she has expressiveness in her music that Jane for all her technical skills doesn't have. He wasn't judging Jane either when he said it, just noting the strengths of the two girls, which is reflected in their character and is why he prefers Emma to the accomplished and quiet Jane.

I agree about liking Jane as a character. In Jane F, Emma gives the reader an outsider's view of a woman in love who has to hide her love from others. In this respect she is similar to other Austen heroines such as Anne Elliot, Fanny Price and Elinor Dashwood. I feel Austen always portrays her characters in these situations in a forgiving and compassionate light.

@@blackghost3193 i disagree, Jane indirectly portrays herself as highly intelligent and passionate, but she KNOWS she lives in a world where she must maintain appearances, so she 'stores' these characteristics. If she is an intelligent and passionate person (especially about music), she is competitive, especially if she sees someone challenging her. But she doesn't show it directly.
@jacintasototarro908

@@blackghost3193 I believe competition is part of the mindset of passionate and mentally ambitious women. The problem is that we've been taught to see it as something negative and to reduce competition to superficialities. I love competition that challenges my mind- I love women who are competitive but challenge me in an intelligent way (not superficial). You can see Emma and Jane were both passionate and mentally ambitious women in a world where it seemed like there were no others women like them.

I quite like it, because Emma was being a bit snarky with her 'oh what a shame you forgot your music' so nervously saying she hoped she could remember the tune before launching into that kind of just shows she can hold her own, which makes Emma come off a bit better because if she just took it meekly then Emma would come across as a bully whereas this way it just comes across as two young women who don't gel well together who have been shoved at each other their whole lives.... Frank on the other hand, in absolutely every version, comes across, to me, as an arrogant jerk that I can't stand! Like, I get that you are hiding your engagement, but openly flirting in front of your fiancé with another women who doesn't know it's pretend is just so slimy and kind of humiliating to both women. Also, you can pretend you barely know someone without taking every opportunity to insult her to someone who already doesn't get along with her anyway. Ugh!

Over-the-top mannerisms killed the character dynamics. Emma was aware of her quite average skills, that's why she went ahead of Jane and she knew that Jane was much more accomplished. So yes, Emma was jealous but not in the "Murder her" way. More like "I wish I could do it, but I am rich and beautiful, so never mind, I will tolerate her" way. And Jane wasn't a show-off, she was just hard-working and talented, she couldn't help but play well. But she didn't do it to humiliate anybody. That is why I don't particularly like this version. It's quirky and theatrical, but the essense of characters is lost in all this buffonery. They are empty and often one-dimensional...

@@seasidedreams6766 I read the book, it has been a while. Jane watched Frank pretend to want to marry Emma. At that point, Jane does not know Mrs. Churchill is going to die. The Westons and presumably expect Frank to marry Emma. Was Jane intending to be a mistress to Frank and then take Emma's fortune? There is a reason Knightley calls him a scoundrel. Jane takes it all imo sacrificingvher integrity. Jane had options. She friends with the Dixons. She could have waited and found an honorable man. Plus Jane is taking expensive gifts from Frank. A fiance doesn't take gifts from men. Only a mistress takes gifts from men.

@@wednesdayschild3627 Jane was very upset because of Frank Churchill’s behaviour and it was causing her distress as she had a fight or disagreement with him because of his behaviour, and she was not the type to become someone’s mistress because she was contemplating to take on a governess job. this was implied that the reason jane left Dixons is because the male Dixon had eyes for Jane, and she didn’t want to come between husband and wife, therefore she left her comfortable life. a fiancé definitely can take gifts from other people, to us readers the gift giver wasn’t mentioned but jane knew it was from Churchill. As for the Aunt, we all knew was very ill so jane was instructed by Churchill to wait.
