New year updates on my new life in Sweden as an American. Things have come to a bottle neck so hopefully a lot of good things will happen soon. I am waiting on Migrationsverket to approve my extended stay in Sweden which is the barrier to many other necessary things here in Sweden like getting my drivers license and personnummer.

A good update video. Seems a lot will move forward ones you get the citizenship approved. But you seem to be doing well anyway. I wish you a happy new year in 2023!

Gott nytt år! I think that the bottleneck is "personnummer", becuse everything in sweden is set up around personnummer. However.. if you sign a permanent employment contract (Tillsvidareanställning) you probably shall send a copy to Migrationsverket? The same when you get your swedish nurse legitimation? Becuse both says that you are here to work.. and there is shortiges of nurses and nurses assistent. In any way, I belive that one need to live here for three years befor one can get a permanent resident permit? And one have to live here for seven years to apply for citicenship.. its nice with dual citicenship, wich one is altso a EU citicenship! To that, there is not only bumps on the way, there is altso a few traps, and the first one is, dont get underpayd, and the second is, you have to take most of your payd vacation days of work! Becuse.. Migrationsverket could suspect, that your employment isnt legit!

Sorry for the late reply. Great information. My employer has initiated the process with migrationverket for my arbetstillstånd. Hopefully I will get an answer about my student / work extension soon… probably in the next few weeks. That will get me through August. I am hearing the arbetstilstånd takes 12 months. Seems strange it takes so long. I think that is very bad for business for the employers who are waiting, not just for the immigrant. The personnummer is definitely the bottle neck. I am not sure how long it takes to get a personnummer after I have gotten my UTkortförlängning. My plan is to go directly to Skatterverket with the decision from migrationverket immediately after receiving it. The reason I did not get a personnummer the first time was that my student visa was only 11 months. It needs to be 13 months to be qualified for a personnummer. Such a complicated process. Thanks again for the advice 😊

Hang in there! I remember the long wait to get my Personnummer as well! Registered in June 2021 and finally got it in April 2022. So it may take a while longer, but have faith-it’ll happen! 😅

Very interesting videos that you have! I’m also from Texas and just moved to Stockholm. I moved here to be with my wife’s family. I just went to Skatteverket to apply for a personal number (seems tricky to get anything done without this number). Really cool that you’re a nurse here, and best of luck to you with the nursing exam and extension

Welcome to Sweden! The personnummer is extremely hard to get if you have no family connection here. And just as you say, it is required for many things. Cool to chat with another Texan in Sweden 😀 Have you found good Mexican food there? That’s the thing I miss the most. I found a super good taco 🌮 place in göteborg.

@@becurious2000 I have not found any good Mexican restaurants but thankfully I know many recipes (finding the ingredients is another thing though 😂) I’ll have to go to Göteborg and have good tacos if I ever miss Texas! yes very glad to meet you as well Brandon!

Hej! I've been watching your videos and now I started from the beginning watching every single video. It's very interesting the way you tell your story. I'm also a nurse, from Colombia, living in Sweden. I'm learning Swedish with SFI but it's going slow. I would like at some point work as an assistant nurse while I go through all the steps to get the license. Do you have some tips or suggestions to have good results with the job searching as you did. Thank you!

Awesome! I started with Facebook groups which I is how I found my first job in home health. Then after a year working I found the job at the hospital on their website. Having a really good CV is what got me the job I am told. So that is a good place to start.

If you got a card from USA or any other not EU country, you might have to write your sign.

When you are done with all that I actually think you should write a little something, maybe publish it like a handbook for immigrants but also write down all the obstacles and give it to somebody in Swedish politics. It all sounds stupidly complicated with the personal number and license. This is something we don't know and never endure since we get our personal numbers at birth.
