Joey you forgot what the reasons was people send cards to the one they love: it's because St. Valentine was sentenced to death and before his execution his love (who I think was the princess) sent him a goodbye poem that was in a small card accompanied with his last meal. I know, it's messed up

I do not mean to bash on Joey, he's by far more of an expert on anime and Japanese culture than I'll ever be, but the story of St. Valentine was reportedly around in the late roman empire, not the "high middle ages" about a thousand or so years later. Also, Shakespeare is NOT from the high middle ages ( he's at least 200 years later) and while some of his plays had courtly love in them, most of them didn't. A better examples of courtly love stories are the Legend of Roland or the Legend of King Arthur. Again, I don't want to bash Joey, I'm sure he's just referencing some buzzfeed article that royally mixed up it's sources, but placing Shakespeare at the same time as st. Valentine is like placing the crusades now.

ann park yes that is true. The candy is mediocre. I know this because my dad gives my mom candies but since we live in Japan, it’s usually Japanese candies. They are still very cheap. And your White Day description is pretty close. They don’t give chocolates. They do give other kinds of gifts. It’s to thank the women for the gifts the men received for Valentines Day. But you’re still correct

Actually, I don't remember in which manga it was, but I remember a girl explicitly reminding the boys she buys (expensive) chocolate for of the "optional" rule (but Japanese's social conventions, so you can't just say you don't do it, yay \o/), specifically so one month later she gets some heavy bling... Is the 3 times return for every chocolate? From my limited knowledge I understood it as you either: 1. Not give back anything (you basically don’t give a shit to who gave you chocolate) 2. Give back something of equal value (wanna keep being friends) 3. Give something 3 times the worth of what you originally received (this would be the male confession, the equivalent of honmei-choco) Also apparently there were originally different meanings in what you gave back, it was something like white chocolate to who you love, marshmallows to friends; not sure about this. Also it looks like South Korea not only has white day, but there’s also a black day (April 14th) for the people who received nothing on the other two holidays.

Valentines day has never seemed equal to me in the west. Sure, sometimes the gifts are but there seems to also be the expectation that men arrange and pay for a posh meal out or similar romantic experience. The idea of splitting it into two days where there is a requirement that one day be a return for the other seems far nicer and fairer to me but then japanese culture has to work in its idea of making gifts to everyone obligatory. That drags its appeal down a lot, IMO. I'd rather be nice to my friends when I want than be a slave to the culture like that. Also, triple return is BS but I think its safe to assume most people feel that way.

Japan has a nasty habbit of making guys seem too good for love and girls have to reward them with gifts as if she should be happy to have a man ...its sorta chsnging but they are still 25 years behind ..they look down on under age dating in schools still ...you have to keep it private ..that's weird as fuck

Tbh, I kinda like the idea of Valentines-/ White-day. Because, Valentine's day here is a day that only tends to be celebrated as an existing couple. If you'd give a present to your crush without actually dating them, it might seem kinda weird. The fact that in Japan, you can do that, and even hide it a bit since you have these other types of chocolates (giri/tomo) to give out, is kinda cool. The closest we came was anonymous rose selling, organised by our school. And, making people give gifts in return is quite charming. I do have to agree Sanbai Gaeshi sucks there, although from what I've heard that's not always expected. Cause hey, white day can be as much of a chance for guys to proclame their love, as valentines is for women/girls. (only gonna talk straight people here) For example, if guys want, they can reciprocate a girl's honmei-choco with an equally meaningful gift and accompanying card, giving a chance for their relationship to blossom. Or, they can turn someone down by giving them giri-choco, at the same time, showing the girl that they did appreciate the gesture she made. They could even give a little white day gift to their crush even if they didn't give them anything for Valentine's day. Honestly, most holidays became what they are because of marketing companies, but if it's fun and makes people happy, why not?

There's Sweetest Day here in the states where it's more friends and family oriented vs Valentine's Day which is more couples oriented nowadays. I find Sweetest Day lovely because people can buy little gifts for each other or do something together as friends or a family. I know my parents give back to each other on this day too, so if a girl got some gifts on Valentine's, she would/should give back on Sweetest Day.

I've always given out candy to my friends and acquaintances(only my crush would get a little bit more than others lol). Also by doing this u can give candy to ur crush without it being awkward. Before this video starts.... this is a video about White Day. It's also 'celebrated' in Korea, China, Taiwan and Vietnam (I think I'm missing a country or two), so it's not a WTF JAPAN video. AND... commencing video. Edit: OH YOU MENTION IT. COOL. Well then, White Day in Korea, as I know it, is A LOT MORE SIMPLER, to be honest. No rules like Triple Return, no different kinds of chocolate giving. White Day in Korea goes as follow: If you got chocolate from Person X on Valentine's Day, then you give back chocolate to Person X on White Day. It's literally that simple. Though I could be wrong on this, I haven't had anyone to give chocolate back to in a while #ForeverAloneOnceMore I personally will treat White Day as Valentines Day Part 2Reverse. This year, I baked my roommates a Black Forest cake for Valentine's Day, sort of a friend chocolate, I guess. And this year's White Day, I baked my secret recipe Habanero-Lime Cheesecake. They both came out perfectly.

I also read once that Korea has something called "Black Day" or, I don't remember if that's actually the name, but it is celebrated a month or something after White Day. I think for singles or people who didn't get anything for either holiday? Do you have any insight or know what I am referring to?
@reso7675
@reso7675 6 жыл бұрын
YES, I ABSOLUTELY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. Fucking Black Day, oh my goodness. So, yes. Black Day is a legit thing in Korea as well. And yes, it is related to Valentine's Day and White Day. So, on Valentine's Day, Person X gives chocolate to Person Y. And, on White Day, Person Y gives chocolates back to Person X. That much has been established. WELL, on Black Day, which is celebrated on April 14, Person Z, singles who didn't receive any chocolates from anyone on Valentine's Day nor White Day go out wearing black to eat black-colored foods (usually jajangmyeon, a Chinese-Korean noodle dish covered in a porky black-bean gravy) to commiserate over not receive chocolates on either day, usually in groups of other 'Person Z's so they can complain to each other about the lack of intimate relationships and chocolates. To this day, it is the only country-recognized 'ForeverAlone' Day that I can think of, and while the premise of it sounds hilarious, it really is a great way and day to bond with other 'Person Z's. Bromances are made on that day, and it's beautiful.

I'm from Germany and from what I can tell, we barely ever even talk about Valentine's day. It was never a big topic in school, but if it was, it probably wouldn't be as one-sided as the one in Japan. It happens to be my brother's birthday, but that's about it. In general, we only give out sweets when somebody celebrates a birthday and not everyone did that either. The best part of Japan's Valentine's Day is WWW.Working. That season is hilarious! It's a spin-off of the Working/Wagnaria-series, but it's probably even better. In that season, there's a honmei choko that's almost lethal and it turns into a running gag. I'm just going to say: "Higashida-kuuuuun!".
