Hey guys! Thank you for always watching my videos! You may remember last time I showed you how to make a healthier version of Tonkatsu - I got a lot of comments asking to see the fried version so I thought I would show you how to fry Tonkatsu for Katsudon!
But this isn’t normal Katsudon! This is Sauce Katsudon - a rice bowl topped with fried pork cutlet in a sweet and savory sauce!
Some of you may know a version that is made with eggs - but I thought I’d show you a slightly different version today!
00:00 Intro
00:55 The Different Katsudon
01:16 Preparing Pork
01:55 Thinly Cut Cabbage
02:45 Preparing Onion
03:18 Breading Our Katsu
04:45 Let's Fry
07:04 Making Our Sauce
08:17 Let's Eat!
Ingredients:
For Katsudon (and fried onions)
- 2x 2cm thick pork loin
- ¼ head of cabbage
- ½ onion
- 4 tbsp flour
- 2 eggs
- panko bread crumbs (around 5 tbsp but as much as you need!)
For the Sauce:
- 100ml worcestershire Sauce
- 1tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tbsp mirin (sweet cooking sake)

To be fair, regular katsudon has onions that are simmered and not breaded & fried. The only thing healthier about this dish is the shredded cabbage.

This has become a family favorite for us, and my kiddo enjoys taking it in a bento box for lunch. I just don't coat in sauce initially, I send sauce on the side. This way it stays crispy and sauce can be drizzled before eating.

I've seen pork katsudon before, and I have lightly fried some veggies like broccoli before myself (with a little bit of a batter) - I have never seen frying onions like that before though! I really wanna/gotta try that now! I'm really feeling inspired - of course, _for some reason,_ I'm watching this at 2:30AM in the morning now and can't do anything until tomorrow's dinner though :P Still, I can't wait to try this. Seems interesting, and looks delicious. :)
