That's the problem with having your career revolve around creating parasocial relationships with millions of socially malajusted men (or women, for what it's worth). I guess a good tactic to avoid this would be to not have a career that revolves around creating parasocial relationships with millions of socially malajusted men? Try being a school teacher, or nurse, or secretary. No fame or big payouts there, though. So I guess it's a bit of a trade off. It's just a shame that this weathergirl is the first ever... I dunno what we are going to call her. Maybe "idol?" I guess that fits.... So this weathergirl is the first ever "idol," which is unfortunate beacuse if there had been other "idols" she could have learned from them the lesson that it's a bit tricky when your career is creating parasocial relationships with millions of socially malajusted men. But she was the first, ever! So it's not like she could have even learned from the example of others... Poor girl never had a chance.

i mean women do the same with male idols in asia. There is reason why there are policies where idols need to remain single and are not allowed to be in a relationship. It is because the companies are monetizing their image as a perfect partner to make money. Nothing to do with being man or women. And i also don't feel bad for people who blame the company for themselves paying thousands of pounds on a parasocial relationship and then blame other people for their own actions. If you want to be in a parasocial relatonship then okay but don't blame someone else if the other person don't like you back.

@@1337Shockwav3 That's basically the gist of it. If you marry/get a girlfriend or boyfriend or whatever. When your job has a target audience of Simps, you cannot say that the views shouldn't go down or they do not get mad. Simply, its best she just quit her career here or go to a news website that doesn't cover this. The reason people watched the news was cuz she was single and cute. Not because she is good at doing the weather. For example, why do u think almost no one watches the news as someone who is single? Its because they have no reason to. No one is good really targeting them. Japan knows this and are targeting them but it also means that their views could plummet if something like this happens.

They're mentally vulnerable and are easily sprung into destructive action because of it. They feel lonely, hated, shunned and abandoned and take it out on themselves and others which imo is what makes them pitiable because that ain't no way to live and I wouldn't trade my life for theirs any day of the week. Victims can be dangerous and make others victims of them because of it, it is important to adress both the hurt that they cause others and the hurt they themselves have endured to make them act in such a way.

I think this is just another symptom of the loneliness epidemic in Japan and around the world. Without close, real life relationships people fall (or increasingly are lured) into these parasocial obsessions. Not surprisingly, when the illusion breaks, they feel betrayed and lash out with the intensity of a wounded lover.

Japan's population is plummeting and it's of their own making. Women have WEIRD as fuck expectations: they want a hot, skinny, "manly" (to the, it means he looks like a K-Pop singer) young and rich (at the very least 6 million yen a month) man, or they won't even entertain the idea to marry one. There are statistics that show that 33% of Japanese young women won't even date you if you don't make at least that much. And then men, well, I mean, they're mostly herbivores, because their society puts "keeping the peace" above everything, but in order to find a woman you have to be a bit of a dick at times, as many women, even if they tell you they don't, they LOVE a bad boy. And Japan is not a society of bad boys. It's a super conservative society (in terms of relationships and sex) in which no one knows what they're doing themselves, have weird expectations of what a man or a woman should be because of media (and not just anime or idol culture, most of what they suffer from is what they learned watching hollywood movies with happy endings with rich handsome actors). And, as with EVERYTHING, here, in Japan, as long as the system has not totally collapsed, no one will do jack shit (and by the time they do something, it will be too late), so nothing changes. Maybe instead of treating women as second class citizens, as a trophy for successful men, maybe they should encourage them to be independent and have a career, and show them that they can be in positions of power in companies and governments as a rule, not as an exception. Maybe instead of treating men as automatically guilty until proven innocent when a woman yells "PERVERT!" on the train believing she has been groped, or because she's feeling like destroying the life of some poor sod, maybe instead of that, have a society in which it's taught from VERY EARLY that women should be treated as people, and that it's OK TO BE A MAN too. Fucking hell...

Just don't get caught. The only rule is, if you get caught you are done. People digging around or not, just don't get caught. Sure eventually you are going to be found out, but it should be feasible to hide it long enough until the time you feel like "retiring", for idols that mean probably 30ish at max, which is the age people these days marry anyway. Just treat it as a win if you can hide it until you are 27 or 30. So it's not a losing game.
@Viewer13128

The key thing is don't get caught after trying to trick your fans (based on info in this video) by saying you have no experience with men because men are scary. it's fine to keep a low profile, but lying about your fear of men while dating a racket smashing violent man? Best is to be open about the dating. Second best is to be private but admit it when it's not possible. Worst is to try to hook in your vulnerable fans by lying and acting in a way that you know works at deceiving them. All those cute acting have a different meaning once you know she was tricking them on purpose with that innocent sounding lie. If the things shown in this video are all true, then it's quite disturbing that she lied to them and acted all cute with the intention of seducing these vulnerable fans.

I'm not saying Saya doesn't have a choice to date, but isn't this what Saya signed up for? When she auditioned, she knew the "rules of the game" in a manner of speaking. She wasn't ignorant of what was expected of her. 1. Act cute and portray a persona publicly. 2. Cultivate a fan following. 3. Reap the financial rewards of gaining a ultra devoted fanbase while maintaining her image. The video pokes fun at "lonely fans", but these fans play a huge financial role. Let's not forget. The stock price is largely because of them. I don't make the rules of the Japanese idol industry. But it seems like Saya wanted the best of both worlds. Streaming fan support and being able to date. I think it would have made more sense if Saya retired from her role first, then announced she was dating someone. That way Japanese Saya fans wouldn't feel so Betrayed. Also, don't act like the no dating rule doesn't apply to the West. Many female streamers avoid talking about or discussing if they have a boyfriend on stream. They hide it. The moment they announce they have a boyfriend, they follower count falls to rock bottom. It's happened to many Western female steamers.

“This whole situation is obviously completely foreign to people unfamiliar with East Asian Idol culture. Western celebrities are free to have romantic partners.” This isn't entirely true-certainly not historically. John Lennon’s first marriage and son was kept a secret because it was feared that Beatles fans would turn against them. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, actors had clauses in their contracts that would penalize them for getting married or having children for the same reason. This led many female stars to have abortions for the sake of their career. There are still celebrities today-particularly ones with a young fanbase-who have been encouraged to keep their relationships secret. It’s also a known thing among popular women in the streaming community that they will lose followers if it comes out that they are in a relationship.

Screw the men who are seen as outcasts and get addicted to parasocial relationships, which just reinforces their inability to socially adapt but makes the businesses money.

I am Japanese. Regardless of our cultural differences or respect, I can speak out directly against this exploitative and stupid society. In other words, I can't deny the idol business itself, but idols have their own way of life and stance, and I think it's too much to measure everything by fixed rules. They can choose what they want and what they want to do. However, the so-called "good-looking celebrities" that exist in the world are defined as idols regardless of occupation, and have blind and enthusiastic fans, and companies actively participate in their fans' business. There are many cases where By the way, did she want to be an idol? This is partly because idols are no longer recognized as a systematic profession. During the idol boom of the 1980s, it was a profession. Seiko Matsuda...Akina Nakamori...they were admired by almost everyone, and they would have been bashed ferociously depending on their behavioral principles. But that is within their expectations. Today's idol groups are in the fan-based business. That is not as common as it used to be. What is surprising is that she is not an idol, nor does she exist in the group. Despite this, she is criticized in the same way that idols were 40 years ago. This is ridiculous. Our society is good at protecting collective interests, but not so good at protecting individual dignity.

It is not a trait unique to Japan though. In the west, we call them "simps", and we see on regular basis how well they take it every time it turns out that some internet-celebrity actually is not as singe and available as these sad people imagined. And the "idols" themselves are adults. They spent time and effort setting up these pseudo-relationships so that they can milk lonely people for money. Sooner or later the character is broken, and the simps never learn...
@Parker--
@Parker-- 10 ай бұрын
I think it's important to recognize the original meaning of the term idol, which is to mean, "a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered." While she may not be a part of a jpop group, she is idolized by her obsessive fans and people who idolize others are wildly irrational by default. Idolization is always going to be a possibility when chasing celebrity status. I would say a fair portion of celebrities actively chase the gratification of idolization from others. None of it is healthy, but it shouldn't be surprising either. Her career and success, whether it was her original intent or not, was always going to be based on her celebrity status. She would bring in donations and get a nicer paycheck, etc. based on her value to simps. That's not to say she doesn't have real value, not saying that at all, but her monetary value to that audience was always going to be her TV/internet girlfriend status. Once that dream is shattered, her value to her fanatics vanished leaving them bitter and empty. To be clear, this is not a defense of the behavior, this is merely stating facts about how and why. It's a cultural problem that can happen worldwide (though I do think the targets of idolization is primarily Japanese and Korean women above most other groups).

Who said that having a private life is considered 'rude' or 'direspectful' to anyone? I have no idea what you are talking about, and you are simply conflating things to heap on the negative stereotypes about Japan. What happened here was that Saya and the news channel made a concerted effort to promote her and all the other attractive newscasters to the general public as beautiful, single women. This is the fantasy all involved knew darned well would sell to the general public, full of lonely guys around the world. How many newscasters do you know of in the world where the station promotes their newscasters with a calendar and public meet and greets? There's a reason why Saya felt compelled to make a statement on the news channel program itself about her relationship. She knew she couldn't keep up the jig any longer. Say what you want about her obsessed fans (and I can assure you there were plenty of non-Japanese obsessed fans as well), but simply characterizing this as random bullying for the sake of bullying, or for having a private life, is totally false.

I'm not a damn creep or desperate to know more about somebody famous. and tbh, most of the time, idols or "heroes" are maybe a completely different person behind red curtains or off camera. basically extremely disgusting or complete assholes. in the US for example, that celebrity Ellen DeGeneres was exposed for being a complete assholes in the media because she treated her workers horribly.

I used think the same way you do but the reality is that this is how the idol economy works in Japan (and other parts of Asia). Unlike other types of celebrities, who earn income from movies, music etc. Idols are dependent on fans for income. Idol fans usually pay large sums of money for brief interaction with their idols (I think it was something like 10 seconds of interaction for each copy of a CD bought for AKB48). Those idols can make a living because they have individual fans paying for 100s or 1000s of copies of the same cd. Even the most obsessed fans of other celebrities (even Taylor Swift) would not do that. In other words in the idol economy the idols ARE the product (their talents in the performing arts are often very limited) and this "personal interaction/relationship" is what the companies are selling. The idols would be the last ones who want this behavior to cease.

No one can “order” the idols to do anything. They can always just do whatever they please if they do not care about the income from “the creeps” 2. Lots of girls (and guys) want desperately to be idols but most don’t make it. Watch an idol production program like Produce Camp and you’ll understand. The “sick industry” as you call it is based on fan generated income and the idols are well aware if it and do their best to attract more fans to themselves (unlike artists who attract fans to their works). I think you are pushing your own values on these idols and their fans. No one forces anyone to be an idol, it’s their chosen line of work. 3. I replied regarding the topic while you replied with personal attacks which, again, reinforces your view that other people must conform to your values. If your job is to sell a fake relationship to people, do you think it would harm your business to ... I don't know... be in a relationship ? This is quite obvious. Celebrities get married and such all the time. Singers, actors and actresses, tv personalities ... it's in the news and people are like "cool, Abe Hiroshi drew his fiance for the press lol"... and nobody cares. Ofc the simps are going to feel differently if they've been paying to subscribe to a fantasy being sold to them, and then find out it was all a lie. every one of those people are individuals with opinions. some of whom paid for trashcasts. they have every right to speak their minds. after all, they are just opinions at the end of the day; not facts. Saya knows who she truly is and thats all that matters. She can easily wipe away those tears with a crisp Japanese paper Yen, I'm sure she has many a paper Yen to do so.

This is the one aspect of asian culture/fandom that I just can't wrap my head around. How can you propose to be a fan of someone and then be mad when that person is happy? Thinking you know what's best for someone else is so disrespectful. Anyway, good of the co-hosts to make fun of the situation on stage. Better to treat it like the silly non-issue it should be rather than be silent about it.

It's not exclusive to them tho. Remember how simp became a popular word? There are people like that all over the world, I personally know a guy who donates big time to smaller female streamers to ask them to meet him irl, and he's otherwise a fine dude

Great video! I hate that idols & K-Pop & J-Pop singers have to have that 'No relationship' rule. They should be free to date who they choose.

Very glad to see that in the end, it was only the loud minority, though they are the most harmful, seeing the event go so well was heartwarming. Unfortunately, in the online sphere, I've seen a lot of good things destroyed by such loud minorities, whether it be about "no dating rule" or other matters normal people just don't care about

It's always the goddamn loud negative people. I hope we as the majority of people with complete sense should be louder. Or, those people are loud because they're have no productive things to do, meanwhile people with sense not engage with bullshitery and prefer productivity 🤔

How happy do you really think it will be with a guy with a tantrum like that? He literally has public outbursts. I'm guessing she's had little experience with boyfriends in the past, and she probably doesn't have a lot of time with him, so doesn't really understand how the relationship will go. There aren't really any happy pictures of them together. Time will tell.

The end is absolutely hilarious, it shows that they don't take these rude fans so seriously and is a great to help her brush all of it off too. I'm sure it had to be difficult to cause so much trouble for the company by just living a normal life, so reassuring her through jokes that it's no big deal is great

I'd honestly say it's cathartic. It shows who are the real fans who know what it is and it rids them of the toxic fans who don't know how to treat others. Thankfully, the real fans greatly outnumber the fakes. And by toxic, I don't mean those upset, I mean, I get it, you like a woman and it sucks to see her with someone else. By toxic I mean those thinking they had ownership over her and she can't live her own life without them and harass her over it.

I'm not sure the jokes were meant for her. By turning the controversy into jokes, combined with a fun show, it "disarms" the situation for the viewers. "Look everybody, it's not a controversy, but something we can laugh at." After all, the studio wants to retain as many fans / viewers as possible. That said, she was most certainly briefed on the jokes. Either so she can play her role in the show, or at least to make sure she's okay with it. I'd like to believe it was just done for her sake, but that seems unlikely considering the culture and other major media outlets worldwide.

Yeah. Toxic fans are usually a minority. Even in sports. Cities would be burned to the ground if everyone started riots after every loss. It's just a very loud minority both online & offline that make things toxic.
