Letting the boy's choose their own colour for their walls is top notch parenting in my humble opinion. there might be others that disagree but having choice in what happens in your own space is really important.

At 53 years old, I've never been able to hammer a nail without bending it or drive a screw without stripping it. So anyone that can do this type of what seems advanced work, is a hero in my eyes.

Very cool! I would have absolutely loved a bedroom like this when I was a kid. And especially if the kids like the colour of the walls, I wouldn't be in a hurry to change it! I also think the air vents in underneath the beds will probably help the mattresses survive for a little longer, and I was impressed to see that said mattresses fit a Jaya-sized human! So these rooms should serve your kids for a good long time.i wonder how soon they get used to sleeping in separate rooms :)

This brings me back to me and my younger brother's rooms, also with loft beds and similar stuff under it. Our mother built them and painted the rooms green and blue. That was 30 years ago now. Time flies!

Neat. Looks great -- lucky boys. If you should paint over a strong color like the blue you have to first use a PVA sealer or it will bleed right through, even multiple coats. Don't know about another layer of plaster. A futon with no air underneath can get moldy. Between excursions around Japan I was staying in my son's apartment in Shibata. I came back from the southern Alps (Kitadake) and he was sleeping on 'my' futon down on the main floor instead of up in his loft. He'd started smelling mildew; looked under his futon. So I spent the rest of the trip on my air mattress. They also make a plastic 'mesh' for RVs. It looks about 1" (25mm) of tangle. This airs out the bottom of a mattress. But your slots should work well. I just took a look at my 'crappy' plywood book case I made for 'temporary use' about 5 years ago. 4 foot (1.2 m) shelves (3/4" ply 1.9cm), two Kreg pocket screws on each end loaded up with books for five years. No issues. (for rigidity I stapled across the back 1/8" luan plywood - but it's free standing.) You could've saved cutting those slots which would've given you options if you ever decided to change the shelves to add more. at 17 minutes you have your hand behind the saw blade. That's a very bad habit. Of course in that set-up a kick back isn't likely to happen, but I've learned (show you the scar) to never get behind your power saw. Always think where is this saw blade going to go if it suddenly goes backward at high speed (if it kicks it'll do exactly that) and then put that area away from any part of your body. Of course this is framer practice which has a lot more variables, like the wet 2x6 I was cutting to make a loft for a punk rocker couple in New York City in 1979. Saw jumped back sliced my painter's pants and a bit of my leg. (Taxi to the hospital for stitches and then back to finish the loft.) For those long shelves and that desk - just glue & pocket screw a stringer underneath about a foot back from the edge. On the book shelf it can be right along the front edge. If it extends over the edge of the shelf you can add 1" of stringer in 1" of space - that's how I've done it for years. I'd use some solid wood (I use a lot of maple and birch), cut a slot for the edge of the shelf (so you end up with an 'L' not a "U" glue it and brads. Stiffen it right up.) And I would've just drilled holes on the two wall panels for clips to hold the shelf up. They're adjustable and you can easily add more shelves. And in the front of that desk lamp I'd make a piece that would shade it from the boys' eyes. When you're young you don't notice glare, but it's still bothersome and tiring. I put the light on the task with some ambient light. Over my expensive computer set up I have two LED spots hanging from cords, enclosed in tin foil shades to do this. This is the old photographer now instead of the old furniture maker carpenter. Sorry to be such a busy body. The house looks great.

Good choice to make those slots in the beds. When I was a kid I had a raised bed like that without these slots and some years later I had the unpleasant discovery that a lot of mold had grown on the underside of the mattress...

my father always fix things in our house because he said to better to it yourself than asking someone, he believe in learning everything so he can do it by himself. Fixing from electricity, plumbing, sink, A/C, lights, all heaters in our house, oven door and even blenders. we learned from him by watching! I can fix switch or oven door or heater that only needed to cut the burned wire, sink. watching you building things to your kids reminds me of my father, he still fix things for us.

Love your work. You can always insulate by building protected transition zones around the house. For example, outside the boys rooms could be a protected porch or sitting area or gazebo type area, separate from the great outdoors, with a seating area for them and their friends. Also would be good for a few protected sitting zones right outside the house.

This room could not be more grouse for a growing child/teen; warm simple colours, access to nature, efficient use of space, loft bed! I can't help but imagine it would be perfect to see a pullout under-desk drawer installed, to move the clutter beneath. However, priorities~ I'm excited to see the rest of the house ^^

This reminds me of the old saying, don't learn from your own mistakes, learn from the mistakes of others. Of course, waiting around for others to make mistakes might be a time consuming waiting for others to make mistakes. Or, watch honest videos like these for fun.

Comming from someone who spent most of their youth on a bed like this: get all the air slits! keeps your matress alive longer plus less chance of mold. Also flipping the matress over every few weeks helps even if the matress is made to lay on a hard surface just gives it a little bit more years. Also I love when the kids are choosing their own bedroom colors makes it their own one of my favorite memories of my childhood (even though now i highly question my younger selfs choice of colors haha)

I love that the kids have a little door to the backyard of their own. I think that will be very useful when they get older. I also love the idea that you might let them garden and design their own teeny yard right there? I think that would be fun.

My dad was like this (except the incredible part about buying an old house in a foreign country and renewing it ahah). He built mezzanines in our house, for my sister and me, a giant/treehouse shed with a slide, a pond. A place for our turtles. All custom built. I use to think it was the norm, because it looked like he had so much fun building these (I’m pretty sure he did haha). I wish I would have been more grateful at the time for building a place that encouraged creativity, thinking about nature and lateral thinking. Thank you papa❤

Excellent work, for westerners it may appear small but by Japanese standards very functional & practical. I would like to know how and if you did thermal upgrades to make the house more energy efficient as I've seen Europeans living in Japan make old houses extremely energy efficient and friendly but maybe it is expensive in Japan?

I've watched all of your videos from the first one to this present video. The videos are great and very well filmed, narrated, and edited. You've shown yourself to be an accomplished craftsman and I applaud your handy work. But as a retired woodworker with 50 years of experience... I don't recall seeing a "biscuit joiner" being used. One of the most essential tools that I had in my shop. Thanks for the great video.

I actually giggled out loud when you tried out the mattress for the first time. Even as an adult a cosy snook sort of bed makes me so excited, especially one crafted like this. It's hard to explain, but knowing how much work has gone into it makes it all the more satisfying to try for the first time! I wish I was you for that moment! :D

I actually like the blue the boys picked. Together with the white ceiling it gives the room some kind of Bauhaus-vibe, which I dig. But at the end of the day, your boys need to like it!

I think that the white in the room complements the blue in the rooms. The white helps lighten things up so that they are not too dark.

I think I've said this before, but I wish the builders of my house had as much care as you and your carpenters. I don't think a single built-in cabinet or shelf sits perfectly square and the state of the skirting boards/baseboards is truly shocking. I actually like the color combination considering they're bedrooms for young boys. What care and thought you put into their rooms-- small but functional and cozy! You plastering the ceilings reminded me of my own father painting my childhood bedroom--bubblegum pink, of course! They've always kept it that way, even though I've long moved out and the room matches nothing else in their house.

The loft beds are such a great use of the space!! And having enough room that even an adult can lie on the mattress makes them pretty much usable for years. My parents made the mistake of getting a bought loft bed that was childrens-sized. So we couldn't put a table under it and once I grew up we could only use it for my younger sister for a while and then it was pretty much useless.

I was basically holding my breath when you were putting the shelves in the bunk beds and kept thinking "please don't scratch the plaster on the ceiling" The bedrooms look great, hell I'm 31 and would still love a bunk bed with a desk underneath!

Love the loft beds! My husband made all of our kids loft beds (just because the kids wanted them ~ their rooms are pretty big ) & my daughter back from college still prefers hers. As young kids, it gave them way more playing space on the floor, as well as a cozy nook for reading. It also made it much easier to keep their room clean & beds made,which was a great perk for everyone. I like that there are doors in the boys rooms, that way if there is ever a fire or something, they can get out easily. I also like your careful attention to detail. Although there are easier ways to do some of the woodworking, the way you did it looks very nice, very professional, and very finished. Not to mention it justified some tools. 😁 Those shelves and beds will hold up well, & look good doing it. Another excellent post, Mr. Llama. 😁

Those rooms of your sons are beautiful to behold, and are very well crafted too. That level of attention to detail shows a lot of love that you feel towards your family there, (even when you're using some of that attention to details as excuses for purcha..... I mean acquiring the proper tools that you need to get the job done 😉). You mentioned that the colours your sons picked out for their rooms didn't appeal to you when compared against the white of the plaster of the ceiling and select walls, but I find it needful to say that, it's actually not all that bad, especially when you seen it in certain lighting throughout the day. I must admit though, when you were doing the ceilings in plaster in your sons rooms, it reminded me a LOT of a certain Michelangelo, plaster-painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican city; doing something he hated, but having it turn out impressive in the end anyway. I look ever so forward to the finishing of your master-bedroom in one of your up-coming video's. And congratulations on passing the 30th video milestone of this Epic journey on the remodelling of your "Japan Abandoned House" series. When we updated my son's bedroom he chose an even darker, more intense blue for both the walls and ceiling. After he moved into his own apartment after college we did repaint the ceiling white and lightened the blue walls to about the same blue as you have now.

Most efficient use of space! The loft beds allow for twice the usable floor space. This will get them ready for college. At least here in the USA, they look a lot like dormitory rooms. The boys will get great use out of their rooms for many years. Great job, as always❗👏 🥰

Looks great, Jaya. It’s so interesting for me to see you doing all this stuff just after my family has gone through the same process. For us, it’s also the first time our daughters will have their own rooms. In our case, we gave them a shared loft that they can access via ladders from each room. In hindsight though, it would have been more practical to use the full ceiling space and raise their beds up, so they could use the space underneath. (Like you did it.)

SO BLOODY BEAUTIFUL!! I love that white plaster with the navy blue. It feels very reminiscent of the Japanese coast. I was audibly gasping when you were installing the top shelves because I was worried it would scrape your ceiling plaster LOL. You did an amazing job of the shelves and their sleeping area. I think having those breathing slots will really help their beds since you don’t have central AC. It will just keep everything fresh. I hope the boys appreciate your hard work!

Loft beds remind me of my school dorms, it was a nightmare because I was very short and there were no ladders. Yours look much better planned out. Very cool.

Learned at my last job working in the paint department at a hardware store that the reason it's important to seal drywall with a primer before painting is because the drywall acts like a sponge and soaks up all the paint. Something to note for next round of painting if you realize the colour is starting to get blotchy or fade.

It was the right choice to put air slots in the bed. Most people don't know but your mattress holds a lot of water over the years and if you don't let that air out it could lead to mold.

About replacing the tables - Don t waste the material. Just cut a stripe and glue it (wood glue) on the bottom, right on the corner, for optic reasons. Used the technique for a nearly two-meter table, no issues so far. Use two stripes (one at the corner, one in the middle) if you want it 110% secure.

Looks very cozy. Makes me remember the years I slept on a bunk bed. I don’t think I ever used the ladder after figuring out that jumping up and down from the bed was way quicker. ;)

I was worried about the kids possibly growing too tall for the loft bed, but then I saw you get in the bed and realized that the loft is MUCH bigger than I thought it was. Those kids will be fine. For my part I think the blue looks cute for a kid's room.
