I encountered a small dragon painter shop when I was in Japan. I filmed the whole process but my legs were all sore from walking lots that day so I hope it is not too shaky with my cheap camera :D
www.kousyuuya.com/ (Probably his website, got this link via comments)
A lot of people have been asking where this shop is located I can only give a rough estimate.
On google maps: maps.google.nl/maps?q=36.75152...
My blog for some photos: immow.blogspot.com/2010/05/jap...

When I was 15 years old in the 1960s and visiting the Great Buddha Temple in Japan, I saw one of these artists creating dragons using this technique. I waited in line as the rest of the group (all much older than I was) went ahead. I stopped and watched and then stood in line so I could buy one. It cost about $2 in American money (the dollar was very strong, then) and took about four minutes to make. I had to wait another five minutes for it to dry. When I caught up with the group, the were angry that I'd delayed them - until they saw my dragon. None of them had even noticed the artist. I still have the painting, now framed and hanging in my living room. People who see it are always amazed, even before I tell them the story.

At any time - no matter how many times he's drawn variations of this dragon - he could blow it. Especially when he's twisting the brush. There are moments when it looks like he's thinking what to do next, but it never seems to put him off his pace. That last little bit of calligraphy shows just how skilled he is with a brush. But the dragon's body and tail is a real showstopper - the brush itself is adding the details! Amazing.

This is why learning calligraphy can be so beneficial. He was able to create the body like that because learning calligraphy teaches you control. You learn how much pressure to use to create the effect and shape you desire. It's beautiful to watch.

For those asking how she did the body in one stroke, it has to do with the way she loaded the brush with ink and the pressure she used to apply it to the paper. She's using Sumi ink. If you watch from 3:30 - 3:40, you can see her hand pushing down and putting pressure on the brush. That's what gives the dragon the scaled texture.
