I believe my Japanese maple is a ‘Bloodgood’ cultivar. As a mature tree, it’s the gift that keeps giving. I’ve had many volunteer seedlings from it, which I’ve potted up through the years, and given to family and neighbors, which have gone on to become beautiful specimens in their own right.

I've been adding some Japanese maples to our garden including, Sango Kaku, Fireglow, Hot Blonde, Seiryu and Bloodgood. The best time to plant a Japanese maple was 5 years ago!

I LOVE Japanese maples! I’m in Zone 8b/9a and have a perfect spot for a new garden where I’d like to showcase a few, but it gets quite hot in the summer (for Canada) as it’s a fairly exposed south facing area. Hearing about heat tolerance as well as cold hardiness was helpful, thanks! More showcase of Japanese maples, please! 🙏

Hi Jim! How in the world did I miss this video… my recent love & appreciation for Japanese Maples allowed me to start collecting a few in my garden to grow in containers. This place is amazing. Hope you can do more like this in the future.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful garden with us. What a special place! I bought a Sharp's Pygmy this past year. It is definitely one of my special purchases for the year. It came from Islie. I have it in a container on the patio and was so shocked to see the size of this one in the podcast. But of course, I think he said it was ~50 yrs old. I will be long gone before mine is that old.

I’m in zone 6a/b depending on the climate and I have 3 different Japanese maples. A lot of people ask me what I do for them when it’s 120 in the shade or gets cold at times . But today is 11/18/2023. My maples still have leaves but they have already been through some 20 degree weather and a drought. But to keep my plants in the winter I use our tomatoe baskets we make cattle panel wire, and on the small trees I put them over the trees and state down and stuff in a lot of the fallen leaves around the yard and then straw, I use the sleeves and don’t loosen them. I pack the sleeves in around the trees. In the hot summer I have them planted closer to things like a big rose of sharon bush, and one is about 15’ out from a tulip tree. , another is closer to the house in a corner but on the northwestern side. They don’t get burnt or freeze. Just an idea for the small plants . Eventually I may move them depending on how the weather looks this summer.

Tobiosho looks like it’s on fire in a good way! Lol can anyone visit this garden cause I’m determined to get to Boring now? Jim and Steph will y’all please go visit this garden again if you get a chance? I just want to learn about all these plants. This channel made my whole fam fall in love with Japanese maple. We look at them all the time in search of one that would survive our yard. So we’ve seen a lot but the leaf structure on some in this garden are completely new to me. Once again I am blown away by the knowledge this channel imparts to the viewers. Thank you so much for bringing us along with you on your trip.

I got a Tobiosho a few years back at Portland Nursery. It had the best fall color of the trees on their Japanese Maple table. Recently I planted two more Tobioshos. I am always second guessing myself whether I picked the Japanese Maples with the best fall colors. The Tobiosho hasn't been spectacular, but fall colors seem to vary a lot from one year to another. This year we had good fall colors, and the Tobioshos were pretty good, and my best colors were my Osakazukis, which I was glad to see because it has a reputation among some of being the best JM for fall color. I also have some Autumn Moons, Ki Hachijos, and Bonfire. The Autumn Moon looks like it will be a nice one with a lot of yellow, providing a contrast with the red Osakazuki and red/orange Tobiosho. The Ki Hachijo and Bonfire colors look good too. The Bonfire puts out a lot of branches so I expect I will need to prune out the skinnier branches so it has a more classic look like the rest of these varieties. This fall I planted a couple of Seki No Kegon. I think I'll like this one in that it is an unusual one that has a weeping shape but with standard maple style leaves rather than the frilly leaves that most of the weeping type JMs have. I prefer the regular leaves over the frilly kind. This variety ought to have great color also. Regarding the Tobiosho, I was pleasantly surprised to see a gorgeous one of those in this video, and it makes me more confident that my three Tobioshos are worthy of their spots in my garden. I also have one Fireglow. It has the dark red leaves during the summer and gets a little brighter red in fall but less vivid color than something like the Osakazuki or Tobiosho.

The contrast of the maples, evergreens, mulch and stones is so beautiful. The Atropurpureum, was amazing. How do they get the moss on the branches and the stones? Another unique feature.

I live in the Pacific NW (Seattle area) and keeping moss OFF is the goal. Leave a car outside for a year and it will have moss on it, especially the north side. We have to treat our roofs (both north and south sides) for moss (along with sidewalks, wood decks, etc). I have 27 Japanese maples and they are a real favorite of mine. Enjoyed the tour of Iseli Nursery.

That sharps Pygmy is EEEENORMOUS. That’s wild. I love that Iseli plays around with pseudosieboldianum and sieboldianium. It can produce some super interesting, results and colors, as well as being extremely hardy on both ends of the spectrum. Sucks that they’re only wholesale tho. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I guess I’ll never have any of their introductions among my collection of 100-something maples 🤷🏻‍♂️. Cooool 😐

Have you checked if any retailers in your area order from Iseli? Most of them will specialize in order add ons for their order. Often it is once or twice a year.

I really like the fall color of the last maple. Are the hybrid Korean maples tolerant of the humidity that happens in the Mid-Atlantic area? I do not think I have seen these maples in my local nursery.

Nothing beats Iseli maples, they sell them mature enough to the point they know they are healthy. I tried Mr mapple a few times and their maples are just to weak and don’t really survive and their grafts are terrible. I own over 30 iseli trees

@JimPutnam I live in Central Calif by Fresno. Zone 9a I want to plant my Amaryllis in the ground any tips? And any idea what I can plant under a Huge Eucalyptus Tree? Any recommendations for plants in Full sun that I can plant that takes little water? Thank you for all the information. We get well over the 100's in the Summer and down to the higher 20's in the winter.

Fantastic plants! Tho they should come up with some other name for those palmatum x pseudosieboldianum -hybrids than Acer x pseudosieboldianum 'cos that's just wrong. Drop the species name off or describe a new hybrid species name.
