about the 米国 = America part, i believe the explanation in the video is correct but there’s an explanation which is more well known-ish here in japan which says that it’s taken from the old way to write America which is 亜米利加(literally just a combination of kanjis that reads “Amerika”), but the first kanji (亜) is already used for the spelling of Asia(亜細亜) so they went for the 2nd kanji, 米 and it turned into 米国

With Genbaneko, the worker cat meme you've referenced, you actually got his origin backwards ^^;; He was originally a meme that formed as a variation of the "phone cat" meme, and evolved into primarily depicting workplace incidents. He became so well known as the "workplace incident cat," that he ended up being co-opted as the mascot for the Japanese equivalent of OSHA, and is used to depict examples of what not to do! So rather than a mascot that became a meme, he was a meme that became a mascot!

Great video as usual. Your friend’s story reminds me of something similar that happened to me a few years ago. Got a visit from a Jehovah’s Witness couple, who wanted to discuss God and stuff. I invited them in to play Mario Party and said if they beat me, I’d attend their group meeting. We talked a lot about religion (I’m agnostic). It was a rather pleasant conversation, even if I didn’t agree with all their views. I fortunately came first and didn’t have to follow through with my gamble. They came only once again to give me chocolate and coffee to say thanks for the chat and the game. It was pretty wholesome. Also the famous 牛丼 guy makes me a little sad because I lived at Yoshinoya for like a year when I wasn’t good at cooking and I didn’t get any recognition, ha ha.

This is quite random, but yesterday, I was passing near Shakujii Station, Tokyo, and there were 2 JW folks trying to recruit new followers. I was alittle taken aback because one of them, a young woman in her early 20s was very attractive and had a great beaming smile. Often cult followers have this quirky, spacey air which alarms you, but she looked totally normal, or actually more wholesome than most of todays youths. I confess for a moment or two I thought, chatting with this girl might not be so bad. LOL.

Just keep up your studying and you'll get more comfortable with the language. Yeah, the kanji can be really difficult but you don't have to treat it as a race. Thank you, I've seen so many memes that mutated out of that cat but I could never figure out how to find out about the original.

The 川 meme is the funniest for me. It reminds me of the time I ordered 7up in a non-English speaking country by calling it Seven Up. I got a very confused look in response.

It's probably because the country has a different word for 7, while they probably called it Seven, the english word

@@tja4501 Tbf most country also calls it 7 in this situation (with their own accent) i'm French and brands like 7up, 7Eleven, 4chan, etc... are prononced with the English numbers (it doesn't work for everything though, for exemple PS4, 3DS, XBOX360, etc... uses the french prononciation of the numbers, and from what i know it's it's the same for other european countries in that case)

I did something similar to the dipping sauce thing. Except it was a type of vinegar in a drinks carton. I downed the whole thing and instantly regretted it.

Since Uma Musume is mentioned... Konami sued Cygames for having a similar support system in Uma Musume. They seek 4 billion yen to compensate for 'damages'.

Correction - Chinese words are not abbreviate. It is the other way round - other languages used phonetic to say the names of the countries in Chinese. Thus it is longer. 米国 is also not a Japanese only thing. In Chinese dialect Teochew - USA is pronounced as Mi Gou ( phonetic ). The Mi is pronounced the same way as you would pronounce the Chinese word 米 which mean rice.
