This is the nicest looking, least confusing heel I've ever done. The hardest part was finding enough stitch markers the right type, and in two colors. (I found a $20. bill in the bottom of one of my knitting bags I'd forgotten about, so it was really worth the stitch-marker search.)

Thank you for this incredibly clear demonstration of JSR's. I took a class on short rows and your video was clearer than my in person experience. What occurred to me when watching was with this method you can always tell where you are in your heel. So well done!

Thanks. Once you know how to read your work (and how the pins are placed) there's virtually no counting and it's easy to see if you have the same number of pins on each side of the heel. Happy knitting!

This has opened up a lot of avenues for me on how to knit patterns I have wanted to learn. Thank you so much. Karen Swenson

New to knitting socks, learned to knit 30 + years ago portuguese- wise Need to try this again, been practicing the shadow wrap, I am either going to make this one or shadow wrap as my go to . These are the best videos , love the visual comparisons you've done on the blog too , I don't know what I want until I can see the finished heel. :)

This video is complete and very useful! I was making them but they were not quite perfect. Now I know what I was doing wrong from your video. To ensure that I do not miss any rows and turns, before starting knitting, I prepare my markers by pairs of the same color, then, I alternate the colors. So I know when I remove them if I'm at the right row. Thank you!

What a great technique! I can't wait to try it. I always do GSRs but there is always a hole on each side where the last GSR is. I usually try to hide it by stitching it up when the sock is finished. Fingers crossed that this will take care of that problem! Thanks for the great tutorial!

I think I can do this....I usually do the heel flap and turn but wanted to try this as it looks quite neat. So what do you do if you don’t have a pattern that says how many rows will be needed, or how to adapt this heel for a traditional vanilla sock. My heel will be over 30 stitches. Thanks!
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 3 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb for short row heels is that you need adout 1/3 of the stitches on each side to be turning stitches and however many total turning stitches there are tells you how many rows are in each half of the heel shaping. So in your case, with 30 heels sts, aim for 30÷3 turning sts on each side of the heel. Since that's 10 turning sts on each side, the first half of the heel shaping will be 10+10 rows long. Of course you can make modifications if needed, but this is a good starting point.

I'm loving your style of teaching, and the fact that you show such great detail. I'm new to knitting, and have not tried knitting socks yet, but I'm watching video after video before I decide which style of sock I want to try, and which type of heel I want to undertake. lol Plus, I'm not real good at knitting, so.... trying to build up confidence too. Have you ever done Portuguese style knitting and purling??
@thechillydog

I like Portuguese knitting when I'm doing basic stitch patterns with just knits and purls. I think it's a lot easier on your hands and wrists.

I had somewhat more teething troubles with Japanese short rows than with GSR's (mainly in figuring out which stitch belonged with which stitch marker), but I've got the hang of it now. Some thoughts: I had some troubles with dropping that first sl st while searching for the stitch marker further down the yarn, but it being a slipped stitch, the working order can be changed if it works out better that way. What worked for me was getting the marker in place after knitting or purling the last stitch in the preceding row, it pops into the right place by itself after turning and slipping the 1st st. Just make sure to snug up the yarn properly. What I never liked with the w&t technique was the p2 together side. It just didn't make intuitive sense to me, and I finally got fed up with having to reference a knitting video for every pair of socks I made. Also, chasing the odd live wrap that slipped off the needle and got lost used to be a horror. I'm usually a GSR gal when working with anything above fingering weight, but the double stitch is a weakness, if or when it escapes it's hard to put right without ripping a row or two. (IMO). Pinned short rows eliminate both problems. It may just be a fluke of this current project (fingering weight yarn, 2.5 mm needles and Knitpro stitch markers) but the stitch marker can be left in place until the k/p 2 together is finished, if something goes wonky with the stitch the loop is still securely held in place. It's just a shame that short-row heels don't work well for my foot shape. In GSR socks I sneak in a couple of extra rounds between the first and second parts of the heel, and I think I'm going to experiment with a combination of techniques the next time I'm knitting a pair of thicker socks. First half Japanese, second half German, maybe?

What an easy technique - attaching the markers and letting them slide. It makes this method alot easier to travel with. However I still like your shadow wraps video since it does not require counting. Question: can the Japanese method also be used for the toe as in your German short rows video?
@thechillydog

I have never actually tried the Japanese method as a toe, but it should work and I think it would be really pretty.

How do you add a heel flap if you're using this type of short row for a heel flap and gusset type sock
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know. I have never encountered a situation where a short row heel is combined with a flap and gusset heel, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. There are always new things to learn and try in knitting.

I suppose you could do this heel 2aat, but it's likely easier (less fuss factor) to work the heels separately like you've been doing.

Question I am knitting a plain vanilla sock and am going to try this heel your demo was amazing my question is do I divide the heel in 3rds and work that way I will be working Over 34 stitches on half ? I have knit a couple pairs of socks and have yet to find a heel I find easy to remember and that I like to work
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it sounds like you're on the right track. If your sock is 68 sts around, the heel is worked across half the sock sts (34 sts) and you divide that into thirds for 11 or 12 pinned sts on each side of the heel. This is one of my favorite ways to work a heel because it fits my feet well, it's so pretty, and there's something simply delightful about the neatly aligned markers when you're halfway done.

The Chilly Dog 1more question when I am picking up the stitches my yarn seems to be in the same stitch as the stitch I need to knit or purl into do I need to slip that first stitch on my turn so the working yarn is in the right needle ? It doesn’t look like you do in the video

question, can this technique be used on any sock pattern regardless of what the author has written for the pattern? thanks so much. Although this does require a lot of prep work, I agree with you, it looks much cleaner. I definitely want to try. Thank so much for the tutorial! You are a great teacher.
@thechillydog

Hi Deb - This technique can easily be substituted in any sock pattern that uses short row heels. It's not quite as simple if the pattern uses a different heel shaping method. There would definitely be some math involved. You would need to understand how the heel relates to the overall size of the sock and also how that size difference will effect any decorative stitchwork in the pattern. Hope that helps.

@@thechillydog - yes it does help. I am still learning. I've knitted a pair of socks that used the german short row method for the heel and I didn't like the looks of it after it was finished. The technique itself wasn't difficult. I'm sure a more polished knitter wouldn't have had the gaps. I've also knitted a couple of patterns that use the heel flap method and, I'm not totally in love with the overall aesthetics, but the finished product was beautiful nonetheless. Do you have a pattern you could recommend that uses the Japanese short row method? I genuinely appreciate your reply. Thank you!

I assume, newbie here, that you can use this heel with any sock pattern, how do you know how many markers to use based on heel stitches being half of your cast on stitches?
@thechillydog

Typically the heel is worked across half of your sock stitches. Of those heel sts, about a third on each side have pins and the third in the middle are regular stockinette sts.
