This video demonstrates a sock heel that mimics the classic hourglass short row heel without the use of short rows. The same methods for modifying a short row heel for a better fit can be applied to this heel, as well. This heel can be used in cuff down socks or toe up socks.
This heel is a modification of the mock short row heel from The Sock Knitter's Workshop, by Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden. I made several modifications to the original process, which I found improved the result.

Wow. Thank you for this. I have ADHD and it’s common comorbidity - dyscalculia (dyslexia for numbers). I learned to knit at age 6. I’m a competent knitter who loves knitting, and especially handknit socks, but dyscalculia makes knitting socks nightmarish. I have several pairs of socks on needles - all of them stumped at the heel. I know how short rows work. I can knit short rows. I understand short rows. But I screw them up every time because I get lost and confused about where I’m up to, make a mess of it, rip undone, start again, and somewhere on the 4th or 8th time (depends how much patience and perseverance I have att), to save my sanity I give up, and put the partly knit socks aside. German Short Rows are the heel I’ve found to be manageable for me, but I don’t love them, I don’t love doing them, and I still make a mess of them. But I love knitting socks so sooner or later I am filled with hope and promise and start another pair from scratch - hence all my sock needles now have unfinished socks on them. It’s so frustrating and sad 😢 This method is fantastic. No getting confused about where that wrap is, or when to turn, or how many rows done etc. I love it. Can’t wait to try. But as I and my daughter have high insteps I’d better pay close attention to see how to combat the too tight fitting across the instep because I don’t like that - uncomfortable. If handknit socks should be anything, it’s comfy and snug but not restrictive! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you 🙏 ❤

It is a really great idea. especially the way you pick up the purl bumps. And I love the fact that with my German short rows, I still get some little holes, I do not like, and this solves it. And the adjustment later on in making the heel longer. Great.

Finally getting to test out this heel, and knitting it with dark wool and fine needles, on an overcast evening in a room with East-facing windows wasn't all that ideal. Picking up the purl bumps on the WS turned out to be far more nerve-wracking on the first try than it should be. However, I solved the problem by marking the stitches to be picked up by a length of waste yarn through the purl bumps on each side, making sure that I had the correct number before getting started on the second half of the heel. That way, if something's not on the lifeline, it doesn't get picked up. Thought I'd share this tip in case it helps anyone.

I just succesfully tried this out on my first sock! I find it quite a bit easier and nicer-looking than German short rows, which I tried out yesterday and frogged today. Your tutorials for both techniques are perfect though, you are an excellent teacher. After the German short rows experience I wanted to try out a heel that did not involve double stitches, heh. And I am asking myself now why anyone would want to do that when they can just do this! But it's like you always say, there are always different ways to arrive at a given result in knitting, some fit certain people or situations better than others, and it's always worth trying them out and understanding them in order to improve one's skills. Thank you again for all the amazing content!

I LOVE this heel! I use chiaogoo sock needles and most other heels require extra needles. This one does not! I can do the heel fairly easy without extra needles. Finding the garter bumps is a bit challenging. I can feel them and guesstimate where I need to put the needle, but I think I might try stitch markers until I figure that part out better! So easy! Love this! Thank you!!

Roxanne I have recently found that a little longer sock foot will add to more diagonal success in long run. I used this heel to make mini Christmas stocking heels as the circumference is so small in mini stockings. This heel worked great, easy to remember In order to avoid holes, I picked up some extra stitches going back in the round, like M1R or M1L then used K2Tog or SSK. I’m using a cotton/acrylic blend size 2 yarn on size 3 dbl points and this mock short row heel was a game changer. I usually use stainless steel needles but was glad I still have some bamboo needles for this task.

This makes for a very tidy heel indeed. I may try it but I'll have to follow your video for the first few times because I won't remember all the little nuances. For the past few years I've been doing the Kirby Wirby heel which is probably the most simple yet effective heel. Funny how I'm still looking for better ways to do a heel even after years of experience knitting socks!
