Thats Singapore in a nutshell tbh. If there's a queue, some people really will just line up for it and wait for hours. Some people join the queue without knowing what they're queueing for. I'm not one of those, but I can appreciate that some things are worth queueing for.

Its more of the queuing itself. Queues/lines are a huge part of their buying culture and they find it as either a "required" or "enjoyable" part of the experience for whatever is considered to be really good/well reviewed. Others may see it as something else/stupid/not worth, but remember, this is just how they view and enjoy things.

Maybe in more fancy/"fancy" places but for the most part It's "whoever orders first will get it first." I can say that because I'm born and raised here. Also, SEA people in general are more open compared to East Asian. Sure that 50/50 people in Indonesia are shy when they see foreigners (especially white men), but that's simply because they're afraid of saying something wrong since Indonesia isn't that good with English. But even with the half baked English, a lot of locals still have the guts to walk to a white man and ask for a selfie or help them. And don't get me started with the Philippines, the most Western loving Asia country on this planet

This reminds me of 2 places in New York, New York. There is a Donut shop that has up to a 5 hour wait as well but you can order online. The interesting point of this shop is that they will hold your donuts up to 3 days or have orders ahead up to 3 days. The second place is known as the Heaven Bathroom. It is a high class bathroom for the 1% to use. It cost $1,000 to $10,000 to use it and have a waiting/ reservation list to use it throughout the year. It is on the 69th floor of the building. The irony is the guy that owns the building including the bathroom, lets customers of his sushi/ sake restaurant use it if they spend at least $30 in his restaurant. No wait list, no reservation, you go ahead of the 1%. Best Sake in America as well.

I have a somewhat similar story, though not for food. I went to visit the Museum of Natural History in NYC. I went there a few minutes before opening time, and there was a LONG queue at the main entrance. I walked around for a bit, and saw a security guard standing outside, and overheard her saying something like there was another queue at the side entrance. So I went there, and the queue was MUCH shorter, and I went in and bought entry to the museum in maybe like 10 min of queueing.

I looked up the website. I think this place is supposed to be famous for making onigiri while not squeezing/squishing too much like they do with normal onigiri, which makes the difference in the result. Also, when the customers eat it on the spot, they make the onigiri right after they took an order. I think those customers wanted to try freshly made ones on the counter in the onigiri shop, rather than the ones that are squeezed in a packet. They’re just valuing getting food as fresh as possible to get the best experience. I’m Japanese myself and I still personally don’t wanna be in the line, but I know Japanese foodie people can be very picky so I didn’t find it strange. I know there are “enjoying being in the line” aspect or “wanting it just because there’s a long line” aspect of it, but I honestly don’t like how people from other cultures think we’re so dumb and are incapable of coming to logical conclusions or something.😂 I sometimes bump into foreigners who constantly do that while visiting Japan. I feel looked down upon, so I usually shut down and don’t even explain our logic. I think it’s rude. (This is how we keep enabling them to do this to us though. We choose not to clap back and disengage. In our culture, that's our being mature. But they take it as their "win".) Also, in the website, they say they sell 1200 -1600 onigiri in a day. There's no way Japanese people are not ordering online and getting slightly less fresh ones when they don't wanna bother being in the line forever.

That's a good point. People do that a lot. On the other hand, there is sometimes this unthinking "go by the manual" way in Japan. I work in fast food and sometimes suggest that someone hop on the register because with only one person on a register sometimes the whole process breaks down. They'll be five of us in the kitchen just waiting with no orders and a line of customers out the door. The tencho is good about noticing when this happens and jumping on a register, but some managers are bad at it. And it actually makes me angry because I am there to work and do a good job. I don't like seeing the process turn into garbage, wasting customers' time. My point is that I've never seen a Japanese person make this kind of suggestion. It's a cultural thing, but you hear about it beginning in schools. People are taught rote learning instead of thinking for themselves (this is what Japanese people have told me; I have never been in a classroom in Japan). Japanese people are smart, but there is sometimes this culture of doing nothing when you haven't been explicitly told what to do in that situation. I think people are projecting that stereotype. There is some truth to the stereotype, but it misses the mark often too. I also find foreigners sometimes act like Japanese people don't think. Of course they think. They just choose to act differently.

@@teddybear6949 Inexpensive, time-saving, expensive, long hours, one person, multiple, in Japan these words are always interactive and freely selectable. Isn't it the same in your country? Some people want to stand in line for a long time to get food from the hottest restaurant, while others look at the line and quickly buy an onigiri from a convenience store. If you are alone, you can easily stand in a long line if you allow yourself to. If you are a couple, there is no problem if both parties are willing to wait in line. If you are a couple, it is no problem if you are both willing to wait in line, otherwise you can get out of the line and go to the wrong store. I don't know about your country's cultural perceptions, but would it be easier to understand if I wrote "it's up to the person"?

I queued almost 4 hours. It wasnt worth the time. Onigiri is onigiri. Nothing fantastic. We also went into the shop to ask if we could order for takeaway and not dine-in. Staff said no. Even if we were to order for takeaway, we would still have to queue before we were allowed to order.
