The BBC and other news outlets are quite fond of talking about "sexless Japan" and don't miss the chance to publish related stories which tend to get shared a lot. A few months ago, the BBC posted a video entitled "Sexless in Japan" with blatantly misrepresented numbers. But what do Japanese people think about it?

The thing is, many media outlets around the world misrepresent or misinterpret issues regularly, whether it's intentional or unintentional. So if you want to actually understand those issues, you just have to take a closer look yourself and check the primary sources... which I do with my videos. But if you want to learn about issues in Japan, you need to be able to understand Japanese because most things are not translated into other languages. So if you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you some free Japanese lessons here bit.ly/2LggtSB

It's simple. The BBC is left leaning and pro-feminism, therefore anti-family and anti-male. Japan has traditional families with often male leads and they hate that, therefore they need to smear Japan.

@@harles5000 I'd have to disagree with your math there. If you're already taking out sleep, work, and food; the 18% that you take out has to be taken out *in proportion* to what's left. In this case, since you have 29% left, you have to take away 18% OF 29%, which is (0.18*0.29=0.052) about 5%. So now you have 24% left, and if you do the 1/3 thing now, you'll end up with 8%. Still a small number, but over 218% of what you ended up with. Sorry if correcting math makes me sound like a prick, but making sure you do the math correctly means that people can't immediately discredit you for it. An actual response to your point about the amount of time we spend would be that we can't measure the significance of an action with how often we do it. For instance, using the same type of math, a generous estimate of the amount of time you spend with friends outside of work/school is less than 10% of your life. However, friends can be more significant to someone than just 10%. Also, despite sleeping for 1/3 of your life, people don't derive their personality from their sleep.

Ive been a journalist for a decade, including 3 years in Japan. I will tell you that most of the reporting on Japan in U.S. media is inaccurate (except mine, lol). I speak Japanese but when I was in Japan I was appalled to learn that journalists with very major U.S. media who were stationed in Japan spoke ZERO Japanese, They also had ZERO Japanese friends and hung around other expats, re-enforcing each other's inaccurate beliefs about Japan. Kyung Lah of CNN was the WORST Japan correspondent I'd ever seen. And she speaks zero Japanese. She was completely incompetent as a "journalist." Her stories were a joke. Yuta is a better reporter than most of them.

When western media sends its journalists to Japan, they are not sending their best... We need a WALL!!! But seriously, I have this theory that they send people to Asia because they don't want them there. But that's just a theory.
@borderlessnewsonline8843
@borderlessnewsonline8843 7 жыл бұрын
Yes Yuta! A WALL against bad journalists going to Japan would be great! lol. The problem is those who manage major news outlets back in the U.S. Many of them have little to no international experience, yet they are tasked with managing reporting that comes from overseas. So when they need to fill a job in say, their office in Tokyo, they choose someone who THEY think would be a good fit. But many of these editors have no real international experience. Or if they did, they spent most of their time in ex-pat circles while overseas. My point is that the editors and hiring managers back at the American HQ don't know what traits to LOOK for in a Japan correspondent, or more broadly, an Asia correspondent. Take for example Blaine Harden from the Washington Post. He covered Africa for many years and then WAPO sent him to cover Korea and sometimes Japan, where he was a TOTAL DISASTER. Maybe he was a good Africa reporter, I don't know. But the thinking back in Washington was likely "we need to fill a post in Asia. Hey, this guy has covered news overseas! He's a great pick!" Harden was one of the WORST Asia reporters I've ever read. But the failure was not only his, it was editors and hiring managers back in Washington Posts HQ in DC, who simply assumed that since he could cover one non-American side of the world, he could of course cover another non-American side of the world. I guess no one told them that, while Africa and Asia are indeed outside the U.S., they are two vastly different continents with vastly different cultures. Another reason you are seeing such bad Japan reporting from WAPO, BBC etc is that the journalism industry in the US (and likely the UK too) is pretty corrupt in terms of hiring new people. Many outlets are required by their own policies to post job openings to the public (on jobs websites, etc), but in reality the hiring managers don't even read resumes that come in from people they dont know. In reality, they just hire their friends. That's usually not the way it works in most U.S. industries. In the U.S., you usually can get a job based on your resume and interview, not based on whether you know someone in the company. In fact, many non-journalism companies discourage such nepotism. But not in journalism. Journalism hiring is often based on WHO you know in the company. That's very un-American, actually, very backwards. Dynamic companies like Google, for example, will often hire people they've had ZERO relationship with, based on their qualifications. The best person for the job. Most American journalists are white, upper middle class liberals. So, when you have a lot of white, upper-middle class liberals with very little REAL international experience (hanging out with ex-pats in Tokyo doesnt count as REAL international experience), and they hire their friends, what you get is MORE white, upper middle class American liberals with very little REAL international experience. The trend just keep perpetuating itself. I'm not picking on whites, or liberals, or upper middle class people, because I meet two of those three criteria lol. However, my point is this group is lacking diversity of opinion. So for example, liberal journalists in Japan LOVE to promote the SOMEWHAT false narrative that Japanese women want to be just like American women. It's true there's an increased number of young Japanese women focused on their career. But as your video shows, there's also quite a lot of Japanese women who want to be housewives. And outside of Tokyo (I lived in Osaka for three years), there are even MORE women whose life's dream is to become housewives. They are educated, quite intelligent and savvy, but their choice is to become a housewife. American media would either ignore this, or promote some sort of false narrative that this is caused by male dominance in the culture etc. In reality, women in Japan who want to be housewives are perfectly capable of making their own decisions on that matter. Anyway sorry I wrote so much Yuta! Hope you find time to read it though. I'd be interested in your opinion on this. Oh, and your video on gender equality was GREAT! I especially liked the comments from one woman who said men in Japan also have it hard, since they have to work long hours. That type of nuance is missing from U.S. journalism in Japan. As I mentioned, you are a better reporter than most American reporters stationed in Japan. Keep up the GREAT work!!!!! What you are doing is REAL journalism! Much better than the Crap News Network (CNN) or any of those other phony outlets! lol

+Borderless News Online That's interesting. I've always wondered why western media just assumes that Japanese women want the same thing as western women, when just talking to a few (non-westernised) Japanese women is enough to make you realise that it's clearly not the case. If I remember it correctly, there are actually government surveys that show that they are more women who want to be a housewife than men who want their wives to be a housewife. But companies like the BBC completely ignore actual data and just keep believing their preconceptions. It's like they can't even fathom that people think in different ways in different cultures. (I have a feeling that they'd do a very bad job covering their own people from a different socioeconomic background.)

@germangonzales2008
@germangonzales2008 4 жыл бұрын
Not uncool, they're talking about people who make Anime the focal point of their lives, people who skip work and school to watch anime, and live in arrested development. Expect them to reach 30 and still be living at their parents house unwilling to find a job, or a wife and move on with life. But if you only watch Anime, during your free time when work has been taken care of, then you are COOL. Anime is devoid of anything serious in life and offers a distraction from reality, I think a lot of people who become Weeaboo-like are using Anime as escapism in order to escape from their real life. It's sad but they can change.
@NvDuke
@NvDuke 4 жыл бұрын
@@germangonzales2008 but why only anime. We all try something or the other to escape from reality every now and then, be it by watching anime or a tv series (english, k-drama, j-drama or anything) or by watching movies and even games. It's the same for everything, if you hamper your work by getting into something fictional way too much then ofcourse it can harm your productivity. We can't blame all these things because we can't stop the world around us but we can always learn to tame our mind.
@germangonzales2008
@germangonzales2008 4 жыл бұрын
@@NvDuke Its the difference between wanting to escape your reality vs wanting to ENHANCE your reality. For some reason Anime seems to be the go to for early 20s youth that want to escape into a world of devoid of all serious topic matter. I feel like with J-Dramas, well the 90s ones I've seen, Long Vacation, Love Generation, these all have very heavy topics throughout them that would offer no escapism. Off the top of my head. A woman left at the wedding alter, infront of her entire family, she is rejected, and there is nothing she can do. A young man takes his crush on a date, she leaves with another man. The next day he finds out they had sex together. Seeing people younger than you, achieve what you wanted to but didn't. -Piano contest "Let's face it Sakamoto, we've failed so many times, there is no place in this world for a failure," -30 and single "Stop believing marriage is going to complete you. stop believing marriage is the key to happiness. This is why your so sad in the first place" my favorite - piano teacher and student. Sensei hears students piano and hears the pain with such force, he knows he is in pain. He invites him to dinner, he is worried about him. sensei -You are a sly one you know that, you PRETEND you don't mind being lonely, you pretend you are stronger than you are" "You know Sena (student) I love music too, with all my heart, but I've realized something. Music will never love me, Music will never ask me "are things okay?" Music will not put a blanket around you when you are cold Music will not hug me when my father dies. Music is not going to come to my hospital room, during my last moments of life, to spend the last I have on this Earth with me. Music WILL NEVER LOVE YOU BACK. "But the one, who awaits your return, who smiles the brighest just for you. Who wants nothing more to see your face and say 'how was your day babe'?" The one, who knows you're not as strong as you pretend to be." "The one who has seen you cry, and knows you are stronger for it, the one who hugs you and tells you "things are going to be alright, I promise you." she says to you, in her sonic embrace "Please, don't give up babe, it gets better, just please, don't give hope." For that one person, you can be free from the Japanese way of life, you cannot be angry at the Japanese way of life, it does not exist in that form. You must treasure that person, who smiles brightest for you, with all your heart. "There is no greater affection, than a person, who awaits your return." "Sena (student) please, I beg of you." "Don't give up on love." Sorry for the rant, but J-Dramas are incredible, and they delve into relationships and love WAYYY deeper than most anime, course there are exceptions, to me the greatest animes are the kind you CAN'T use as escapism, because the themese of family, love, and death are so blunt. One piece (1-300), deathnote, grave of the fireflies, INITIAL D (godly) Neon Genesis (brain food) My Love Story (J-drama level anime). There's many more, but these are definitely the holy ones. As you can see, I love anime, tv, all forms of escapism. But I do not support procasination escapism, distracting yourself with TV cause you don't wanna study, is shameful.

TV stations are big money making machines, and everyone that works in them is, in some way or other, feeling the pressure to make money for the TV company they work for, trickling from the top where the CEO is trying to keep the investors that hired them happy, and moving down in the form of bosses at every level managing the people they have at their disposal to keep their own boss happy.

Homer Simpson Japan is a modern, capitalist country, but it's not "Americanized". While Japan & the U.S. have had close diplomatic, cultural and economic ties since Commodore Perry's arrival, and Japan adopted/adapted many American influences during the post-war occupation, such influence is no more Americanizing than it is to say the French, Germans or the Italians. Remember that Japan industrialized in the late 19th century, and by the turn of the century, was equal to the great European powers economically and militarily, and even beat Russia at war. By the early 20th century, Japan had a thriving democratic government and was a U.S. ally in WWI. Then, like Germany and Italy, Japan chose a nationalist, military-dominated path for about 20 years. But post WWII, with U.S. help, Japan recovered to the relative economic position they held before the war, just as the Western European countries did (with American help), but again, without actually being "Americanized". Cars were invented by Europeans; Americans improved on their production in the early 20th century and spread consumer car culture around the world. But Europeans didn't become Americanized for it. The Japanese then further improved on production methods in the latter half of the 20th century and spread consumer car culture even more till Japanese car companies became the largest in the world. But countries that adopted Japanese production methods didn't become Japanized and more than Japanese car companies became Americanized earlier. Similarly, trains were invented in Britain and adopted in the U.S. Did that make us more Anglicized? Now the Japanese are world leaders in train technology (and the U.K. and the U.S. aren't)--does that mean the world is now Japanized? Nope. The Japanese, like the Taiwanese, love baseball, which was introduced to them by Americans. But Japanese don't care that much for American football or basketball (compared to Americans or to Japan's love for soccer). The Japanese political system, public school system, judicial system, healthcare system, etc., have more in common with European countries than with America's. Of course, because of our special relationship and the sheer size and innovations of the U.S. economy and mass culture, there is much interest in Japan of all things American and our influence is commonplace there (as it is elsewhere in the world), particularly in pop culture. But that doesn't mean the Japanese are "Americanized" by it. Just look at today's mass cultures in Taiwan, Hong Kong, S. Korea, Singapore and the large cities of China: the youth dress and act like Japanese, and their mass media (TV shows, talk shows, movies, magazines, pop music, etc.) are patterned after Japanese media, not America's. And the average Japanese had cell phones (Handy phones) and social media long before Americans did, so while Apple's iPhones are very popular now, the social networking culture there is distinctively Japanese. (The tens of millions of American Sony Walkman users were no more Japanized then in the '80s as Japanese iPhone users are Americanized today.) I think it's correct to say that the Japanese, like Americans and most Europeans, as well as many Asians, share a global culture and are modernized (post-modernized?), or industrialized (post-industrialized?), but not actually Americanized. I don't mean to blast your comment but it's a common misconception that leads to a lot of misunderstanding between our cultures and countries.

It's because Japan is generally more conservative than western society. Many westerners think this means that it is backwards and such (like, is oppressive to women, etc...), and thus have negative views of Japan.

Hard to prioritize a long lasting relationship in your early 20's. You'll have a much easier time finding someone around your age group cause by then people already know what they want in a person and can make time. I'm speaking from a 28 year old myself. bruceweel that's the way alot of journalism works now. Take the "opiod epidemic" they'll bend the facts like crazy on that. Like "100,000 overdoses a year" in their articles refers to all drugs, not just opiods. But because they put it in an article about opiods, you think they're all opiod deaths. Actually more people die of overdosing on antidepressants than opiods. Then they've decided to lump together heroin addict with people taking opiods for pain. The net result of this? My 90 year old grandmother is treated like a criminal for asking for medicine for her pain. And she is not the only one.

You all know that Japan is declining in population right? in fact; not only declining but because of its high life expectancy, it's aging very fast too. The guy also says that this is an unmarried poll and it changes everything but it really doesn't. "National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, showed the proportion of people who have never married by age 50 hit a record 23.37 percent for men, up 3.23 percentage points from the previous survey in 2010, and a record 14.06 percent for women, up 3.45 points." So about 25% of under 50 men are not married, who make up the lesser population percentage of japan. This is why the Population is failing and declining, marriage is failing but the results is at 12%. Japan has more old people than young, who when counting the married skew the results. Think of 5 60 years old and 1 20 year old being married and having sex and 1 20 year not having sex or marrying. while when you put both in, the results come out "1 in 6 not married or have sex" the actual important really is only the 2 20 years old who are split in 50%/50%. www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2017/04/05/national/1-4-japanese-men-still-unmarried-age-50-report/#.WaZd_tOGOi4

Ok, but you're talking about people not having children, while the bbc report is about sex, which is kind of a different thing...I think that in developed countries the tendency is about the same because we're starting to care more about education and upbringing and want to focus more on quality rather than quantity. This doesn't mean that sexual activity should decrease, so I find my self to agree with what the two older guys said: they want to give off these weird image about Japan being full of perverted and nerdy men who live on manga and masturbate all day, even though we have that kind of people in the west too

I suspect that some Westerners buy into the notion of a 'sexless Japan' because they read that its population is shrinking. In reality, this doesn't necessarily mean that Japanese people are less sexually active, of course, but I can nonetheless understand why some Westerners assume this because it potentially could be the case, however unlikely (if specific research were to be conducted linking the two situations). Ultimately, though, most human beings crave sex no matter where they live.

Well, Japanese people are becoming less sexually active, and have been traditionally less sexually active than people in Western countries...just not to the extent that the media portrays them as being. Rather than being sexless, Japan is perhaps a bit sex-challenged.

Sex is way too over-rated and it's not a priority for most couples. When I was a teenager I used to think sex was common among adults and married couples, but it's not the case. I hardly get the time to get cosy with my gf. What we think about is sleeping, resting, cleaning our house, shopping. Sex somehow went way too down the priority list, now it happens hardly every month. Imagine having sex only 10-12 times a year. But we are surviving even without it, and as I said it's way too overrsted

It is not uncommon to see women and men in their 30s to 40 and even 50 unmarried or even have a relationship. Japanese are married to their work more than anything since it is what takes up most of their time. The marriage rate and population age gap is getting worse all the time it's a fucking fact! Idk what the problem is here. Yuta is a slaty fucking little man and hates excepting the truth about Japanese culture. Although I don't know why??? This isn't unique to BBC, nor is BBC all "fake" (deserves to be defined) news, nor is the entire story fake, nor is any news outlet exempt from skepticism. You are right to have a grain of salt, but do not fall for the bandwagon of "fake news", nor adhere to a specific bias against a specific network. Obviously there is some sort of truth in the concerns of the original story, it stems from something. And you can find reliable information on BBC's website. You will always get a bias and slivers of misinformation from any source. Continue to diversify your sources and question them! “If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. People watch BS like that...and this is why TV programs mainly suck...cause they are either exaggerated or propaganda. I still have friends who think Japan is expensive (who have never been here) EVEN AFTER I tell them it's not really that expensive. 日本についてのじゃなくて番組を作りたいから内容が必要ですね。大げさな内容は売りやすいからそうしているだけです。で信じやすいバカな人間が多いのでどんどん作っています。日本でも外国についての番組を作った時も大げさをよく使えます。同じ理由で使っていますね。私はそういう番組を見る時に、絶対違いますよという考えが良くでます。私はそういう番組は外国でも日本でも嫌ですね。 :(

@@Connetification For comparison's sake, I looked up the prices of crab in a US restaurant in California (Joe's Crab Shack), which sells you "clusters," of crabs at various rates depending on species (Snow $11, Queen $13, King depending on market) and "Crab Buckets (Snow $33.99, Queen $35.99, mix of Snow/Dungeness/King $38.99). I assumed an exchange rate of 125 Yen = $1 US, putting your meal at about $28 US. Pictures I'm finding online of the crab buckets indicate in the neighborhood of around 4-8 crab legs per crab bucket (one online review that probably fails the outlier test stated that they got only 2 crab legs in their $32 bucket and each member of their family ordered and got the same thing), plus some other inexpensive fodder (like corn on the cob), so if you got two whole crabs for $38 and they weren't tiny little guys, you may have actually done much better than you can at casual dining in the USA.

Japan is actually a world model on what sex culture should be. Rarely do you hear about teen pregnancies, unwanted pregnancies, and rampant STDs there like in the West, particularly in the U.S. It's really amazing how low Japan's stats are in these areas, despite having the world's 10th largest population. And it's good because sex shouldn't be a casual thing. Good sex is intimate and a quite the spiritual experience when you meet the right person who isn't just horny on some dating app and brags about how many times they had (bad) sex.
@nodezsh
@nodezsh 5 жыл бұрын
"And it's good because sex shouldn't be a casual thing" Says who? "and brags about how many times they had (bad) sex" Again, says who? You seem to be romanticising sex too much. Sex is sex. It's different for everyone. Some prefer to consider it sacred and do it with one person, some like to celebrate it and share it more liberally. Some will only have sex with their most precious peers, some will have it with any number of friends, some will have it with anyone. Some will take it casually, some will do their best to ensure quality time. Sex differs from person to person. It is most definitely not what you described. Your perspective on what sex is and what it should be simply does not exist in the real world.

Thb I find your comment very backwards. As long as there is mutual respect, I don't care why, when, or how other people have sex. Respect in this case means consent, no lies/misleading, and respecting each other's boundaries. Also that having sex does not mean that the other part is in love with you, or that they are a less respectable person.

okay but. "sex culture" shouldn't be dictated by anyone. Dictating sex and sex norms is regression (within obvious reasons of course). As someone from the uk who loves japan (and is asexual) this is so ahhh wth you doing bbc, theyre not always like this but whatthehell. They couldn't represent the asexual one correctly either, there's literally someone in this that spoke as if she's asexual, thats not nationality thats sexual orientation

I honestly don't believe things are as bad in Japan. If the media loves anything it's exaggerating and stretching the truth or lies

Ah! that makes more sense, a more realistic report. Like they say, "The foreigners just want to have a particular image of japan". Thanks for this, it seemed absurd, the reports like that of BBC.

Like master Jiraiya once said: Rejection is part of a man's life. If you can't accept and move past rejection, or at least use it as writing material, then you're not a real man.

Can we get a video about sex education in Japan and what most kids/teens/young adults are taught regarding courtship and proper relations?
@summerchild5141

ItsumoSeppun4 That would be nice, but based on my experience in junior high and high school, teachers love to push contraceptives. "You will get pregnant if you have sex. If you can't take that responsibility, and also to prevent STDs always use condoms etc." and "Raising a child is hard. A child shouldn't raise a child." is what we often heard from teachers so most of us are good with...you know, NOT getting pregnant. But that doesn't mean we don't have sex. 😑

I lived in Tokyo for about 4 years in my late 20's and while i understood some of the repression that is endemic in Japanese social structures, i had no trouble finding casual and medium term sexual partners among the local women. They were intelligent, beautiful & surprisingly forthcoming, maybe because i was a foreigner.

Sexlessness in Japan has become an issue in Japan. Even among unmarried people. According to a survey conducted by the Japan Family Planning Association in 2016, 47.2% of married couples are sexless. However the term "sexless" is somewhat misleading, since Japanese media uses the definition coined by psychiatrist Abe Teruo in 1991. The Definition of sexlessness is "Not having sex without special circumstantial reasons, for more than one month, and this situation is expected to last longer."
