A lot of Norwegian-Americans are very fond of certain Norwegian words and phrases that aren't very commonly used in actual Norwegian, and they don't necessarily know what mean, and here in Norway we mostly just find it charming. From japanese perspective, it's interesting but sounds a bit wierd. Difficult to explain why tho, Japanse may prefer short number of characters to read in particular using kanji as a symbol like the tatoo “舞-Mai”. Also “冷奴-Hiyayakko” itself makes us associate with cold tofu at first and the first impression doesn't disappear even if you tell the another meaning.

I'd like to clear up some apparent misunderstandings in case it seemed like I was trying to be an expert, because my first comment was a little vague. I make no assumptions about the correct pronunciation of the word. "C-H-A-I" were the Latin letters under the Hebrew letter. So I'm just relaying what was printed, which is not an endorsement of its accuracy. "Chai", pronounced like the first syllable in "Chinese" (very different from the Hebrew letter of course), is the English pronunciation of the Indian word for "tea". The reason this particular word is known, and why it is associated with India specifically, is because in America, "chai" refers not just to tea in general but a particular sweetened tea beverage, with dairy and spices, as prepared in India. People must take care to use words where the meaning is less vague and more absolute, in translation. Free in price, and Free as a person, do not sound the same at all in Japanese. There is no actual connection between these 2 concepts

But it's poor grammar in English -- 'It's To Die For" is not correct English, it's just as a Valley Girl expression. "Kore No Tame Ni Shinu" (I would die for it") might make more sense grammatically, but would a Japanese person know 'to die' is used so casually? Americans do throw around the 'die' word casually -- like "I can die now." or "Just kill me now." I don't know how much of that carries over to another culture. I do know the Japanese do a similar thing with 'yabai.'
