Bass is a foundational element of music. Regardless of musical style, genre, or era, Bass and Basslines function as a rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic anchor.
All types of Bass instruments (electric bass guitar, fretless bass, synth bass, upright bass, 808) and all styles of Basslines (electronic, hiphop, house, funk, disco) operate within a unique set of laws of musical gravity and sonic motion.
We’ll create a lush colorful chord, C minor11, played with an ambient Fender Rhodes electric piano sound drenched in reverb and delay. This chord will provide a harmonic background as we explore the melodic aspects of Bass (the octave, the perfect fifth, and the melodic fragment). These concepts are the key to composing interesting and memorable Basslines whether you are producing music and making beats or playing a Bass instrument. These ideas are relevant to creating Basslines in hip hop, house, techno, drum and bass, jazz, funk and beyond.

I have been teaching myself music theory for about a year. I have been playing bass, though, for about 10 years. This video has allowed me to put words to some of the feelings I have had while playing, making bass lines, and jamming. So, thank you very much! Being able to describe with words how you feel/what you are doing is very important in being able to move forwards onto something more complicated/exciting

Interesting lesson. One rule of thumb I remember from a long time ago was bass plays a lot of root notes, sometimes thirds and occasionally fifths if you want to get fancy. I guess it depends a lot on the genre but this is a cool other approach to it.
