Kevin’s not “just” the beatboxer, although he’s a damn fine one. If you want to keel over from being impressed, get this: aside from also having a beautiful singing voice, Kevin is a classically-trained cellist, having graduated from Yale in music. He also speaks fluent Spanish… and freakin’ Mandarin Chinese. Fluently. The guy is an all-around Renaissance man!

It’s always fun to watch people’s first exposure to PTX. 😀 Scott Hoying (tall blond, baritone) default lead (starts 90% of their songs) but they don’t have an official lead singer. Can sing anywhere from bass to tenor. Mitch Grassi (dark hair, tenor) Most likely to have the highest note in the song, this did not show his upper range at all. Always has a different look. Matt Sallee (white jacket, bass) newest member of the group, replaced the original bass in 2018. (Previous bass, Avi Kaplan, 2011-2017, had long dark hair and beard) Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano), has close to the same range as Mitch, but is more comfortable in the alto range. Also changes look, particularly hair color and style, frequently. Kevin Olusola (beatboxer/tenor) You will almost never hear him sing, as he’s usually beatboxing. If he’s not beatboxing, he’s adding to the harmonies. But the handful of occasions when he solos are epic and fans are always clamoring for more.

Mitch and Kirstin are so close in their range and tone that I often can't tell which of them is singing. Especially in the group's early days they were practically identical. I think Kirstin has changed her style recently, so it's easier to tell them apart, but I still usually have to check the video to see who's doing which lines. :-)

I love Matt, he's got a great voice and he's fit in well, but just FYI, Avi is what they call a "basso profundo" - the lowest subtype of bass singer...Mitch (the one sporting a mullet here) is a countertenor, the highest type of tenor....this group is all about extremes in talent, all different personalities and backgrounds, but they mix so seamlessly - I love that they help each other shine, choosing who sings what to serve the needs of the song instead of egos...just a really hardworking, super nice group of people, which is why their fans are so loyal :-)
@nikelodeon6852
@nikelodeon6852 4 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethsantersero9597 Avi is not a basso profondo. He's a bass baritone just like Tim and Geoff. In fact they sing way lower than him. He usually doesn't go below A1 in chest.
@janetranslates
@janetranslates 4 жыл бұрын
@@nikelodeon6852 We-e-e-ll, I'm no expert, but before Avi joined PTX he was in college studying opera and singing basso profondo roles. He was quite young then and his voice has developed a lot. Yes, Tim and Geoff both sing lower notes than Avi, and all three can sing pretty high as well. In case anyone asks...there's no such thing as "which one's best." I'm new to Geoff, but as for Tim and Avi--the world as I know it cannot exist without both of them in it. (And for those who hate it when people use first names and assume that everybody knows: Avi Kaplan of 2011-to-2017 Pentatonix; Tim Foust of Home Free; Geoff Castellucci of Voice Play.)
@nikelodeon6852
@nikelodeon6852 4 жыл бұрын
@@janetranslates actually it's pretty easy to judge who's best. Tim's the best overall singer cause of his high notes and Geoff's the best bass since he primarily sings bass and has the most agility below C2. In choir the roles for voices are bass1 and bass2 just like tenor1 and tenor2. Bass 1 is lower than bass 2 and tenor 1 is higher than tenor 2.

The name "Pentatonix" actually comes from the pentatonic scale in music theory. Basically, the pentatonic scale is made up of F#, G#, A#, C#, and D#. These are the in-between notes in a sense, the black keys on the piano that are just a little above or below your standard "natural" pitches... and there are only five of them. Thus, Pentatonix 😊

They went to HS together with Scott and again sang as much as possible. They did videos as "The Trio". When the sing-off happened they found Avi and Kevin, had 1 day to rehearse and ended up winning. Damn awesome. Their record company pulled out so they went to KZfaq and rocked it.

Scott (tall blond guy), Mitch (high pitched guy with the mullet) and Kirstin were friends and sang together since highschool (and earlier). In 2011 they decided to audition for the show The Sing-Off (accapella competion), but needed a rhytm section. They met Avi (the groups original bass singer) through a friend and found Kevin (beatboxer) through youtube. They ended up winning the show! They've been releasing albums and toured together ever since. In 2017 Avi decided to leave the group for personal reasons, but helped them find their new bass: Matt Sallee (the 3rd soloist in this number). As for other videos of theirs to check out... can't go wrong with their 3 Grammy winners: Daft Punk, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jolene. I would also recommend their Evolution videos (Evolution of... Music, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Rihanna and Ariana Grande) as well as Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Sing (a PTX orignal), Havanna, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Hallelujah... But pretty much everything they've done is great.

He graduated from Yale with honors, plays the cello and the sax, is fluent in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, and was headed to medical school (already accepted) when Scott contacted him based on one of his KZfaq videos of him beat boxing. Scott made a great sales pitch, and Kevin basically said, 'I can just delay Medical School a year if this singing group thing does not work out', so he joined as the beatboxer. I don't think medical school is in the cards anymore.

Subscribed. Prepare for Pentaholics to request like everything they've ever done :D. You can't really go wrong with their stuff. They have a pretty high standard they don't go under and even their older stuff is awesome. They can do all of this just as well live, which is one of their selling points. They also do their own arrangements along with their arranger Ben Bram who's usually there to polish the final product. But they've always been very hands-on with everything they do. Someone probably already said that it's just these five. The only member that changed was the guy in the white jacket. He's their new bass. They previously had a different guy for that. If you react to some of their older stuff (up to 2017), you'll see him. Otherwise the line-up haven't changed even though it might seem so sometimes because Kirstie changes her hair color quite often and Mitch (mullet guy) is a chameleon who changes his looks so drastically and so often a lot of new reactors mistake him for a new member every time they react to a video. Their fans can identify a year when a video was made by Mitch's look :D. Anyway, I loved your reaction and hope you'll react to more of their stuff. I'm sure other people already gave you tons of recommendations :).

Kevin seldom sings because he is the beatboxer, but he *can* sing, very well. The thing is that when he is singing, there is no percussion, which is pretty foundational for a rock sound. So I'll not recommend any of those songs (although other Pentaholics have already pointed them out). Two of their earlier performances might really interest you--their Daft Punk mashup (seven Daft Punk songs, woven together seamlessly, and a big breakdown at the end where they are singing up to three songs simultaneously) and "Love Again" (an original song of theirs, which is the acme of a cappella EDM). Both have striking visuals and makeup (although the Daft Punk video was produced on a shoestring budget of $400; the audio was recorded in a closet, and the video was shot in an apartment kitchen).
