@@heartlknj I understood it a bit different, as fanfics should be kept only in the community that reads them which i don't think is okay. It would be hard to make sure that everyone featured on a site like that has given consent, there are stories with a lot of different plots and genres so if you consent you agree to a lot of different stories, even the ones which may depict you as a criminal or a predator not only the fluffy ones. That would be controversial if someone agreed to that.

(TW: mentions of sh and 💀) Another con: the romanticization of poor mental health. As a young teenager growing up with fanfiction that glorified sh and self-💀 as my only source of education on mental health, it really damaged my perception of myself and others. @@sweetembrace6706 Of course! I don't mean to minimize that in any way. A better word I should have used would be romanticization. A lot of ff (at least in the circles I was in) mis-use, mis-represent, and spread a ton of mis-information. They made the things that people have to go through seem like a desirable thing. Like the 1D fanfics that romanticize having an abusive relationship.

honestly, i love fanfic. but not real people fics lmao. i dont usually have an issue w real ppl fics i just dont like them, but i very much do have an issue when it crosses a line. basically, no sex, no illegal shit, and theres got to be a disclaimer. if u would have an issue w the person ur writing about reading (and not just cause ur insecure and have anxiety), maybe keep it in ur drafts. also idk what kinda sex ive been reading but the first time ones are always trash. theyre so bad 😭. I'm like afraid of first time/virgin tags. Okay, my fanfic tips for y'all are: 1. get off wattpad, go to ao3, once ur on ao3, check the damn tags, know exactly what your getting into before reading. 2. and take all fics w a grain of salt, most authors will say 'this isnt safe sex' or 'dont do this' but rlly listen to them. 3. fanfiction isnt education, i have learned so much from fanfiction but its still fanfic written by often anonymous authors. do ur research is all im saying. 4. fandoms are great, but please babe, general internet safety.

i’ve read and written fanfiction (both fictional and rpf) since i was pretty young, and i pretty much agree with everything you said. being exposed to some harmful tropes and being misinformed about safe sex wasn’t good. but i’ve also grown up in fandoms and having that sense of community was amazing. most of my queer exposure was through fandoms, and seeing representation was somewhat helpful to my young queer mind. being raised on the internet, fanfiction sites were like a safe space where i could read and relate to other people like me.

i find myself having anxiety reading "regular" books due to not knowing anything about the story beforehand. A character I've grown to love over the course of multiple books could simply die at one point and i hate being caught off guard by it. Possibilities of major character deaths and unhappy endings in general just throw me off reading new books. I find myself going back to the same 20 books over and over again simply because i know exactly what'll happen. Reading fanfiction of a certain media or pairing i'm already familiar with is comforting and feels safe, because i always have a general idea of what will happen in a broad sense, but still get a new and exciting story. Tags and warnings on AO3 are especially amazing with this. I never need to worry about an unexpected major character death or an unhappy ending without me being prepared for it. With tags and warnings i'll always know the general idea beforehand and if bad things happen, i'll be ready for them. It might sound dumb to want to know the main beats of the story beforehand, but knowing the gist of things in advance reduces a lot of my anxiety and apprehension. It's just comforting.
@radiosilence289
@radiosilence289 3 жыл бұрын
omg yeah! i hadn't even really thought about it that way but it's definitely more relaxing because you don't just get a full list of trigger warnings, but you're also overall very prepared for the plot and vibe of the story. you can read stuff that fits your current mood best because the tags tell you if it's fluff, angst, smut, hurt & comfort, hurt without comfort, etc.

fanfictions definitely romanticised a lot of things too me that definitely shouldn't have been especially as i was a young teenage girl. like i was twelve years old and i read a fanfiction about a 16 year old in a relationship with a 23 year old and i thought that was normal i just couldn't see what was wrong with it. they also often times do romanticise toxic relationships which is so bad especially since like myself it is young girls reading these. not too mention the incorrect depictions of mental health issues in them. with that being said though a lot of the authors are very talented and have introduced me to loads of new things (music, tv shows, movies) and also educated me on different topics as well

And you haven't even talked about how amazing it is, that people write thousands upon thousands of words of fanfiction. In their free time. And then I can read so detailed, gorgeous stories, like for free??? Just because we are both fans of the same person. However, I mostly read One Direction fiction because I love the boys and they always make me smile, whether irl or in fiction. I have learned a lot from it. I tend to find myself struggling with the morality of reading rpf bc I don't want to objectify the artists I like but I've found so much comfort in fics I've read and they tend to be so well written that I disconnect the real person from the character. in a warped way, it's like a borrowing an image to fulfill a story, which is where I see the dubiousness of it as the artists don't consent to their likeness being used. even though I don't project the fiction I consume onto my actual perception of the artists, I understand the discomfort that comes with it, for the artists/actors and fans who just find it distasteful.

i haven’t seen anyone talk about this yet so here’s another point against rpf: I’m a writer, and I believe in order to have well written, believable characters, you really need to have a good understanding of that character’s personality. their likes, dislikes, fears, motivations, etc. You need to know how they’d think and react to certain situations, you need to know them inside and out. But when you’re writing or reading a character who is already a real person, that’s when you get to a whole new level of parasocial relationships. Not only do you feel like you know this celebrity that you’re reading or writing about, you’re imagining them in scenarios that have most likely never happened. You start to get this warped sense of who they are as a person, because who you are reading is not the same as reality. Now I’m not saying that readers think those stories are 100% true and can’t separate fantasy from reality, but what I am saying is that over time, you form a certain idea of what that person’s personality and behavior are, and that influences your perception of the real life celebrity. It’s a subtle and gradual shift, but eventually you start to feel like you know this person because you’ve read so much about their “life”, except none of it is real. It’s a form of idolization and worship. You put this person up on a pedestal and begin to place expectations on them from experiences that aren’t even real. And then, when that celebrity does or says something in real life that deviates from your glamorized perception of them, that discord can feel super confusing, uncomfortable, even upsetting. that’s not fair to the celebrity, and it’s not fair to you, the reader. there’s an element of comfort to reading fanfic and following the story of a character or real person that you feel emotionally connected to. most often they are your idol, and the protagonist of the story. you want to root for them, you want them to do well, be a good person, maybe even conform to your own political and religious beliefs if that’s something that’s very important to you. maybe you imagine them as queer because the lgbtq community is in desperate need of representation. these things are all natural, and i totally understand why some people turn to rpf. I’ve been there, and fanfiction was a way to distract myself from my mental health struggles. Even though I believe rpf isn’t really ethical (for a whole host of reasons i won’t get into), I would never put anyone down or make them feel ashamed for reading rpf. I just think that there are a lot of possible repercussions to it that we need to look at more closely- for the subject of the fanfic as well as the consumers and creators. it’s an interesting discussion for sure.

As someone who gets way too attached to fictional worlds, fanfiction and fandoms have been a thing in my life since I was 11. (And I have to say that I’ve done a pretty good job of filtering out the bad stuff, thank you tags.) Fanfiction can be really wonderful and beautiful so long as you know your way around things. That’s why it’s better to filter the good from the unhealthily written and depicted stuff by getting fanfic recommendations from social media if you don’t know where to start.

I've been reading fanfictions for years now, and I honestly can see it's effect on how I perceive my own relationships and the expectations I set for them. It makes me kind of sad honestly, because I get my hopes up so high it eventually backfires sometimes. Reading fanfiction allows you to live out the life you dream and fantasize about, which can be extremely harmful once you start having real life relationships.

I have read a lot of fanfiction and I still do, but only about fictional characters. It feels really weird and gross to me, those people are real people and live their lives just like any other person, just because they're famous doesn't mean it is okay to make stories about them. I feel like it makes people fetishize their idols even more. It is as weird as shipping real people together.
@emilycooper1602
@emilycooper1602 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s fine if it’s in an alternate universe cause then it’s basically just random people who look the same and have the same names as those people, it’s basically the same as writing an original story and saying “this character looks like x.” But I agree that canon compliant real people ficus are weird, like that’s like fantasizing what they get up to, which yes, is very weird to me
@pohia
@pohia 3 жыл бұрын
@@emilycooper1602 totally agree, and when you’re talking about rpf those works can never be fully canon compliant because you only see their public lives and have no idea what they say or do in private. plus it feels very weird calling a real person’s life “canon” as if their whole life story is just like a plot line for other people’s enjoyment?? i’ve read some rpf (only AUs though) and i was constantly questioning whether or not it was okay to do. it was difficult because i can honestly say some of those stories were the best pieces of fiction i have ever read, even compared to real books, and some of them brought me a lot of comfort and distraction from times where i was really struggling. but at the same time it feels super dehumanizing to the person it’s written about because you’re totally disregarding this entire person’s real lived experience and personality. you can manipulate their actions and sometimes even put them in romantic and sexual situations for your own enjoyment, as if they’re just a made up character and not an actual human being. when jaz said she doesn’t think big celebrities care that people write rpf about them, i absolutely believe that’s untrue. i think that those celebrities just learn that it’s an unfortunate part of being constantly in the public eye and they learn to (hopefully) ignore it. personally i would feel super uncomfortable if a random stranger wrote about me and them in a fantasized sexual situation, and then published it in a public space for anyone to see. i’d never put down anyone for reading it because i’ve been there before and i understand the reasons why people turn to rpf. but now that i’m in a better headspace i can recognize that it’s wrong and a gross violation of that person’s privacy and even personal autonomy. that’s just my perspective on it. sorry for the paragraphs lmao

Exactly, through that the Idols get fetishized and oversexualized even more and these dumb shippers just have even more they can enforce/project on these idols. I can just imagine how I uncomfortable, weird and sometimes even disgusting it must feel for real life celebrities like One Direction or BTS to be in these maybe even creepy and cross sexual fan fictions about themselves and the other band members or strange celebraties. Fan fictions about fictional characters are fine but real life celebrities should be a clear line. They are human beings with their own life's, relationships, feelings, needs, thoughts, these celebraties are no empty puppets for fans to play with.

There are many things wrong with fan fiction but damn I can’t stop consuming it. The fact that you already have a connection with the “characters” it’s a great start, and specially with ao3 you can really pick the story you’re in a mood for. Want a long ass story? Got ya. Want time travel? Got ya. Next door neighbors? University? Time periods? Magical powers? Go ya! Supernatural? Harry Potter? Marvel? One direction? GOT YA. Sometimes you just want fluff, sometimes you want complicated storylines and fanfics will cover that for you and I absolutely love that. People make fun of it because they only see the surface with the cheesy plot lines and abusive relationships being romanticized. There’s so much more to it if you get more deep into it tho

Hi! I just came across your channel and I'm very late to the party for this video, but you made a lot of good points to be discussed, especially when it comes to real person fanfic, and it made me think about about more pro and con points about fanfic in general. Personally, I'm torn between real person fanfic is disrespectful to the real person and it's based on a person but not about them. When the fanfics are canon and just one of these (just random examples, not real fics) "the 1D boys play football during rehearsals" mini shorts, it's not harmful. I enjoy thinking about it. But when it comes to smut fics I'm not sure it crosses a line. Harry himself said in an interview one of the most disrespecful things he read about himself on the internet was fanfiction. We don't know what exactly he was talking about, but by his reactions to being asked questions about his womanizer life he never had or wanted, it was probably about that. I came to the conclusion for myself that when reading fanfic I only read stuff that would not make me unconfortable if it was about me. As another person in the comments has pointed out, there's a lot of problematic depiction of mental illness in fanfictions, especially when it comes to romanticising depression. On the pro side, there's actually fanfiction that does a very good job at describing how to help someone through an axiety attack. I work in healthcare and (just random examples, not thinking of any specific fics here) when in fanfiction Niall is helping Harry through an anxiety attack backstage people are actully describing real grounding techniques. But again, I ask myself if I'd be ok to be the protagonist in someone else's hurt/comfort story who didn't ask for permission. I feel like shipping needs to be adressed, too. I won't go into 1D ships here, but it's another thing you have to consider when writing fanfics. What's in your headcanon is in your head, but I'm not sure how comfortable anyone of the boys would be when they find out there's a fanfic about you and your 1D bandmates having a drunken orgy with 5SOS. (Why not write canon pie fight fanfics instead?) I think the point that it's written by fans for other fans is a good one. People enjoy it. There are amazing writers out there. I love fanfic, I've written some Doctor Who and Sherlock fanfiction myself 10 years ago. When thinking about real person fanfiction, I'm hesitant. I feel like a "Y/N meeting Harry at the grocery store and he helps you carry your shopping bags to the car" oneshot is fine. But we can't know what hurts another person. Even a respectful fanfiction about themselves might make feel them like an object to fans. Anyhow, I'm happy I found your channel, nice to meet you, I'm Nini. Hope you're doing well.

thank you so much for this video jasmine! i've been looking forward to this for a while! for me, i enjoy reading larry fanfics and camren fanfics mostly just because they helped me feel confident in my sexuality. i don't ship camren- i hate how it affected lauren and camila- but the fanfics (mostly the aus like yellow and off camera and ymms) have really helped me with liking girls and realizing that it's okay and it's a beautiful thing. larry fanfics- even though i'm a larrie- are never something i read seeing the characters as harry and louis. i mean, for most fanfiction in general, i have a hard time imagining the actual people because the characters are different from the celebs. that's just my take on it though.

as someone in their 20s who grew up in that fanfiction golden age, i see today many things that i believe are negative, things that negatively affected me. i think it gave me a sense of obsession almost and of having such irrealistic expectations and hopes that i'd find someone that thought of me as "not like other girls", or that i'd date an idol of mine? not to mention how boys were portrayed in fanfics back then, as this extremely abusive guy, punch-the-wall kinda guy. idk, i just see myself having to forget and re-program a lot of ideas that i believe fanfics put into my mind.

i have always said that there wouldn’t be such a big debate on whether real people fanfictions are harmful or not if some people who read fan fiction were mature enough to understand that 1. the actions/decisions made by the characters are completely fictional and shouldn’t be related at all to the real person, and 2. (in the case of toxic relationships in the story) that people reading it wouldn’t want to see themselves in a relationship like that just because it has a “romantic/happy” ending. I have definitely seen so many people romanticizing toxic relationships that even the author says not to romanticize, so yeah i feel like this really has to do with the maturity you have when reading fanfics. and this comes from a person that reads fan fiction :)

When I was like 11, I've read my first fanfiction ever and I loved it so much that it made me wanna read more not only fanfictions but also regular books. And I really didn't like the ending of that fanfiction because it was super sad and I, being the 11 year old I was I didn't want the characters to suffer, so I wrote the ending myself to pretend as if the story ended differently, as if the characters had a happy ending. That made me wanna write more and I realised writing is so cool. I started by writing fanfictions (but I mostly wrote au) and then slowly started creating original characters. So right now when I'm thinking of a plot and my characters, I may picture some celebrities but their physical appearance is the only thing I take from them because I give them new names and personalities and all of that stuff. So they're not really fanfictions anymore, those celebrities in my story are like actors. When I write I feel like I'm writing a script for a movie and I know which person I'd like to portray this specific character. Many people think it's still fanfiction but I don't agree Also, I grew up on reading queer fanfictions which is great because I live in a quite homophobic country so queer fanfictions told me that 'hey, men loving men are okay, women loving women are okay, transgender people are also ok!' and when I realised I'm queer myself, I didn't experience an internalized homophobia. I didn't really think of my sexuality, I didn't really question it. I liked a girl so I confessed to her, it turned out that she liked me too. So fanfictions definitely had a good impact on me

okay. I write rpf. I have been doing that since I was about 13, and I'm in my 20s now (not the same fandom, but you get my point). I think a lot of the misogyny, unsafe sex, etc. is much more common in heterosexual fics. gay fics do have their fair share of problematic stuff but I think, in general, the problems come from poorly written y/n fanfiction when rpf that is lgbtq+ is USUALLY more diverse and more accurate. at the end of the day though I think people need to be more accountable for the content they consume online. I think people who complain about rpf writers/fics, or dislike them in general, should not interact with them, or the writers who like them. I think people should read the tags and know their limits and not blame writers for content that they didn't like. I think minors need to be better protected; smut fanfiction is not for them, I find that most adult authors who write sex know this and try to shield minors but minors also need to know that that content is for other adults. I also think it's important to separate fiction from reality, the people who write rpf know it's not real and we don't claim it is, it is a fantasy and it is creativity and expression. rpf writers do get a lot of slack and I get that some criticism is warranted (particularly for people who actually do project their writing onto the real people they're writing about) BUT we do this for free. because we like it. I spent months of my life writing a fic that only takes an hour to read. but I wanted to do that and I enjoyed doing that and I wrote it for me and other fans who want to read it. rpf writers don't need people telling them that its immoral or disrespectful because we see it differently. we're just going to keep doing it. if you're already convinced that rpf is bad I don't think your opinion will be changed by a writer KNOWING it's morally grey and acknowledging that, but choosing to do it anyway. I also think heterosexual y/n fanfiction is VERY different to lgbtq+ rpf shipping members of groups/bands together. I don't even think they can be compared because they're written for different reasons, by different people and on different platforms (ao3 has more of the latter, wattpad has more of the former). they're also read by very different people too. people base their assumptions of rpf on the former too, when I think member x member fics have more traction and I think lumping them together is unfair. people who make video essays about fanfiction tend to completely ignore their differences - I think, in a way, this contributes to the negative image fanfiction has.

as an army for like 5 years I've read *a lot* of rpf lmao and yeah sometimes it can be really really problematic, some stories are really messed up and deal with sensitive topics totally in the wrong way, and it can have a certain impact on the fandom perception of some person if they are portrayed in some way again and again and again buuuuuuut it can be really helpful for a lot of young people, above all for queer young people, I'm pretty sure it've saved the lifes of many of us having so much representation, and a lot of *good* representation, and see queer people being happy, living romance, having a supportive environment just really helps a lot with dealing and enduring grow up in a world that tries to break you every fucking day

the thing in my opinion is 1) the only difference between fan fic and celebrity gossip/news is fanfics are usually written better. connecting a person to something they don't necessarily believe is a selling point for magazines like people magazine
@bellagalavotti5921
@bellagalavotti5921 Жыл бұрын
2) the person in the fic is a character. aside from the name, no author is trying to convince the people reading the fic that any of what they are saying actually happened. so the morals and character of the actual person aren't really being called into question

3) in au stories, the real people names are used by the author as a vessel by which to tell the story. kinda like the last point, the character in the fic is distinguishable from the real live person
