honestly i think with stan twitter people have a whole perception that is is ALL toxic wherein it’s just whatever fandom you’re in, the louie side is fantastic (in my opinion) and there is little to no drama but when you start to lean to the one direction side and begin to cross the boundary it becomes more... distorted shall we say, different fandoms hold different opinions (of course) and express them in different ways (of course) but people need to realise it’s not the whole of stan twitter that’s toxic just, certain parties that ‘ruin’ it (shall we say)
@ell4332

@@darriancassidy2803 i’ve just said that? you’ve just reiterated what i’ve said in my comment but other words, i didn’t say i found it toxic if you’d look back at the comment, i said others found it toxic, and i am in the midst of watching the video now, i elected to comment before hand as it was my opinion and it still stands as jasmine holds the same one, and as i said before both you and jasmine said (practically) the same thing but with different words

@@ell4332 Exactly, like yeah there’s a lot of toxicity in fandoms and stan twitter in general, but that doesn’t mean the WHOLE fandom is like that, esp with big fandoms, the bigger the fandom, the more toxic, it’s known, but that doesn’t mean the entire fandom is toxic, there’s bad apples in every bunch, and some fandoms are just bigger so have more bad apples🤷🏻‍♀️ sorry I kinda ranted a little too much maybe💀

@@fluffylouis454 i agree!! i am personally on stan twitter (i don’t know about you?) and due to being an ot5 i tend to merge into different sections and it annoys me that people have a flawed view of let’s say harries and harrie twitter when we’re not all like that, as i said in my other comment and as you said it can be literally 10 fans who ruin it for 10,000 they can give such a bad rep and it’s awful. following with your bad apple analogy that’s so true just think of it like an extended metaphor, stan twitter being the tree, the branches being the different fandoms and the apples being the fans, one bad apple ruins the bunch and i suppose it is what it is as we can’t do anything about it but it still pisses me off

@@ell4332 Exactly, I’m actually not on stan twitter, but I see how people generalize fandoms based on a few immature ones, and as a directioner for 7 years now, I’ve seen how toxic this fandom is, with fan wars, arguments, division between the fandom, etc...but that doesn’t mean that ALL directioners are toxic & act the same way, it’s a shame how these toxic stans ruin it for the entire fandom:/

i was on 1d stan twitter for almost a year before i left bc i just couldn’t handle it anymore, i made so many amazing and nice friends on there and it was fun for the most part, but i was constantly seeing ppl who weren’t even in the 1d or solo 1d fandoms say terrible things about my favs and it just wasn’t good at all, and also everyone is so concerned and obsessed with the amount of streams on a song or the amount of stans an artist has and just doesn’t care about if a person is talented or anything that it just gets so exhausting having to deal with people like that and ruins the whole point of having a stan account tbh, like if you are only going to talk about a person that your account isn’t even for and say “ * blank * is such a flop they can’t even get on the charts while * their stan * is on the top of the charts” “imagine stanning * blank * couldn’t be me” “* blank * cant sing idk how they have fans honestly” it’s just makes no sense whatsoever and i don’t get how ppl think saying that stuff is ok, but honestly tho if it wasn’t for ppl who say rude stuff about other ppl for no reason i would probably still be on there bc it was genuinely so fun talking with ppl who have a common interest as me, and as i said before i made so many great friends while i was on there :)

I find cancel culture on Twitter to be quite ignorant. It’s educational values are lost when people are trending hashtags which put certain artists down or which are insulting. Why can’t an artist be held accountable for their actions without insults or cancelling them?? If you can have a conversation on their platform to make your point, that seems more efficient and effective to me. Otherwise, it begins to fall under the umbrella of toxicity. But it’s a culture that will just keep evolving and will continue to do so, so long as there’s this competition led marketing in the music industry.

Adding to the appreciation of Jas's recognition that much of "Stan language" came from the BIPOC community, especially the Black queer community, some further sociolinguistic reading about language and race and gender: Stephen Mann's (2011) "Drag Queens' Use of Language and the Performance of Blurred Gendered and Racial Identities." just popping in to say how toxic stan twitter is. its the worst truly. fandom wars, being "cancelled", having drama with other people in your group chats or in "your side" of twitter, people priv quoting. It really builds up to become a massive source of anxiety, especially for me, because its fucking scary to wake up to a massive ratio and hundreds of dms telling you to d13 or something along those lines. personally i've been on the solo louis tomlinson side of stan twt for ages and i've experienced little to none toxicity coming from the people on there. everyone i've met is so nice and all they care about is supporting louis and showing their love for him. and also staying in their own lane without talking shit about other people's favs unprovoked which is so weird to see nowadays :( i wish all fandoms were that way so everyone can enjoy stan twt the way (or we) do

that's so true. i'm a kpop fan and also a directioner so on twt i see lots of stuff abt bts, stray kids, blackpink etc. and one direction and the thing i noticed immediately is that louis' fandom is so calm and almost never toxic. i wish kpop stan twt was like that lmao, there's so many fanwars but seeing the 1d/louis twt side on my tl is very refreshing

Yup, I definitely agree with you. The louies‘ side of twt is so calm and friendly! Ofc the directioner side of twt is friendly too but there’s a lot toxity in that fandom. I’m an ot5/ louie for almost a year and I was once canceled for using a non existent word but besides that I love to be on the louies‘ side so much bc it isn’t as much chaotic as the directioners‘ side tbh. I’m really glad, that my tl isn’t full of solo harries, who drag the louies down tbh. The thing, that surprised me was that there are people, who call themselves ot5s but hate Liam which I just don’t understand. I don’t want to only spread slander about stan twt, so there’s something positive about it, which is that the moots there are really friendly and take care of you a lot. Bc of stan twt I met my bsf, who’s also an ot5 and a Arinator (sorry if I wrote that wrong idk how they’re really called)!

i LOVE this video. i was on stan twitter all of high school and i ended up deactivating around may of last year and it’s crazy how much it was affecting my mental health without realizing it. i was actually on tv show stan twitter and not music but i had mutuals that were involved in all kinds of different fandoms so i definitely saw what you talked about in this video. one of the funniest parts of music stan twitter to me was comparing charts. i don’t want to get all “not like other girls” here because i do love plenty of popular artists but as someone who does listen quite a few “underground” (like less than 30,000 monthly spotify listeners) artists, it was funny to see people care so much about popularity. just listen to the music, who cares how well it’s doing if YOU like it? i also was someone that was guilty of doing unfollow sprees like every other week just to keep that skinny ratio and it’s funny to look back and wonder why i cared so much about that.

as a kpop stan who's been on kpop twitter for a bit, i'd say fancams and fan edits were separated for a while before they kind of became synonymous on twitter. fancams were videos filmed by fans at concerts and shows before becoming more mainstream within the industry (where broadcasting companies, i.e. mnet and kbs, started making more official "fancams" of kpop idol's performances, which is ironic as they were called fancams for the sole reason that they were filmed by fans, but now they're usually by these big companies.) those fancams are the vertical, longer videos of performances with very professional set ups and cameras. fan edits are a bit different. they were clips edited together, taken from vlogs, stages and other forms of content in general. i guess this are the videos with more resemblance to the vines that you mentioned. i don't know much about the fan edits outside of kpop twitter, but non-kpop fans probably started calling their own edits fancams because they're used for the same purpose as kpop fancams - to promote their faves and get people to watch their performances. but from what i've seen, non-kpop fancams/edits were different from kpop fancams and just adapted to being calls fancams through some weird evolution. now "fancam" is just a wider term for videos focusing on someone's faves in general, whether performances or movie scenes or vlogs and whatnot.

I've been following you since the good old days (the old channel) and there's nobody I trust more to talk about stan twitter. It is an interesting topic to discuss but it often derails tremendously because the people speaking about haven't lived it. Seeing it as an outsider might seem crazy and it might make the worst parts stand out more, but it's not that bad. I'm old now, but I've been part of this changing culture for years and yes, it can be toxic, yes, it can be a lot of things, but all communities have sides like that. The only reason is more demonized when it comes to stan twitter it's because of people's view on 'fangirls' (and misogyny, to an extent). Idk, I like that you put a positive bit at the end. I'm tired of male youtubers making vids mocking a culture they can't really understand bc they never experienced it, it's nice to hear an objective perspective. Hope you can continue the series with more fun vids ❤️

its really interesting looking at different parts of stan twitter, as a fan of both the mcyt and 1d subtwts, you can really see different perspectives and how much it overlaps. especially nowadays, i feel like most of the teenagers on there want to do good in the world, and try to help rt and spread awareness, which i think is often overlooked by the fact that we often accidentally trend things due to twitters algorithm. if you relatively stay in your subtwt, it can be a really accepting place, but once you reach out it can be really toxic depending on the fandom. ( this is just personal experience for me in my next statement) for example, a lot of the mcyt selfie days that people do for fun are often found by other fandoms and it can be really disasterous, with super rude and dangerous comments to people with unstable mental health. i think some fandoms have gotten really brave in their actions because they dont see what their words do to other people. stan twitter is just such an interesting phenomen to look at, and i definitely think its only going to get worse unfortunately.
