In this video we build the brand new Spitfire model from Eduard in 1/48 scale, this model comes from the dual combo profipack boxing of the Spitfire story, a brand new release for 2020. The kit features fine recessed rivets and panel lines with raised rivets around the cockpit section of the fuselage.
This video is part 1 of a 2 part video build series, I have created a playlist for this build series so be sure to save it!

Nice video and plus one subs. You are spot on with the Sutton Harness as well, the amount of people who put that second 'Y' part on the front on the seat rather than looping it over the seat is amazing. As you said the instructions are not overly helpful here

I’m afraid you’re both wrong, the Y part goes down the front of the seat so that with the friction lock off on the shoulder straps that pass over the seat and through the armour the pilot can lean forward to reach things he’ll still held down into the seat by the Y piece.

Sorry, was saying that I’m building the 80s Dropship, from the Aliens film, and it’s bringing back nightmares of how clunky and difficult the kits were to build back then. We are definitely spoiled today, even if things are slightly wrong in places. I have this kit, mostly for the box art, and look forward to seeing you finish her 👍🏻

Step-by-step review is very informative-in letting us know what we’re getting into with this Eduard kit. Fits seem to have improved since their polikarpov kit. However, they are still molding small 3D parts flat and letting the builder do all the fiddly construction, and guesswork of what part goes where. Too bad, cause they are offering some truly interesting subject matter.

Really helpful video, the first I’ve seen of yours and I’ve subscribed. Part of me wishes I’d held off buying this kit as I suspect I’ve fallen for the old Eduard trick of them filling the box of an ok kit with goodies to lure you in. Their Typhoon release of last year was an example of that where they included a wrongly sized seat ! Omitting the later undercart selector on this kit is another own goal . Luckily I had a voucher to spend and I have just got the later Tamiya release of the Mki Spit to go alongside my current build of Tamiyas 1993 Mki . I also like what you did with the interior green colour, I took the easy route and went MRP. Looking forward to the next instalment.

They've done a lot of things good with this kit, apart from those details. Every kit manufacturer has mistakes or omissions - like the missing seat armour of the Tamiya one...

whtalt92 Yes and they’ve stuck the crowbar on the cockpit access door.......again 🤦🏻 To be fair Spitfires are a minefield for kit manufacturers as things changed almost daily with the Mki in 1940. I am more eager to get stuck into Eduards kit now though and see for myself.

@jabonorte
@jabonorte 3 жыл бұрын
Obviously, this is going to look amazing when it's finished, and Eduard kits have great detail, so they're really rewarding when you get them right. Trouble is, the Spitfire is going to be a 'bread and butter' kit for any manufacturer - they would expect to sell thousands each year for years to come and the mark 1 leads naturally in to the mark II and mark V, so it would have been nice if they'd made it less fiddly. They do sell resin upgrades for super-detaillers anyway. Or are Brassin kits supposed to make the kits easier to build these days?
@chrissansum

Very interesting to someone thinking about building his first kit! Your video highlights why it is a bad idea to get all gung ho and go straight in with an advanced kit. The Tamiya Mk I looks like a much more sensible prospect - again your video makes this clear. Out of interest, have you ever built the 1/48 Tamiya Mk V Spitfire, and if so, any thoughts about that kit vs the Mk I? Thanks for the very informative video!

Good kit with some odd research! The throttle fresh out of the kit has the propeller pitch control; not much use for an aeroplane with a two blade prop! As you rightly say, there were plenty of mk1 aircraft with the automatic selector, and these were retrofitted to some aircraft too. Interior green is a matter of personal taste in many ways. Although there is a specific DTD colour, it’s quite clear that different manufacturers used slightly different colours. They were all green, but there is a LOT of variation. A number of companies use this method of building up the cockpit, but from a scale perspective, it’s massively out of proportion. I think by the time one has attached the side walls to the fuselage halves, they are pretty much the same thickness as the actual aeroplane!

I like your style of producing your video. I'm slowly coming back into plastic modeling and finally able (as an adult) to focus and really produce the kind of finished models I wanted to achieve in my youth. However, filling seams and sanding steps are still one of my biggest hurdles and fears. I've been devouring KZfaq videos to learn as much as I can before attempting it myself. Do you have, in your video library, a tutorial on how you address those issues? Do you have a direct link you could share to save me the effort of searching for it? Thank you.
@whtalt92
@whtalt92 3 жыл бұрын
Trouble with sanding and filling is that it's not exciting to watch ;) However, if you can prevent having to do lots of filling in the first place (pre-fitting, and not trying to glue everything at once) then cleanup is much reduced. If you can't find suitable clips in the backlog here, try Paul Budzik or Flory videos for example. They do some step-by-steps and basics stuff.

Some of the engineering on this is a head scratcher. Only thing I can come up with is, perhaps; ease of manufacture. Also, it wasn't too many years ago that Eduard was just a cottage industry. Maybe some of the slide molding techniques that Tamiya and others use; are beyond what Eduard wishes to do at present. Hard to say. But, you really should not have potholes all over the exhaust manifolds. You just shouldn't.

@ChampionScaleModelling
@ChampionScaleModelling Жыл бұрын
It’s the spar in the wings, you have to get it spot on, I had trouble on this build and then managed to do better in later builds, best to set the spar and wings against the fuselage to make sure it all fits then let it dry separately. You can then assemble it as per the instructions and the spar will be set correctly, it gets put out of line by parts of the fuselage

Hmm. Not sure if you have the sutton harness correct. The Y section that you ran over the top of the seat and behind I believe is suppose to go on the front of the seat which is then anchored through the hole in the base of the seat back. I did it this way on my Revell Spitfire and I have also seen pictures of it done this way. Also, you don't have the armoured plate there that was fitted behind the seat. This would also make it impossible to wrap the Y section over top and behind the seat since the armour plate would block it. The revell spit does not have an armour plate so I used the one that came with the barracuda cockpit set. See here: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010794105855

Well, A few of us researched this using period and restoration photos. This one did not have the armour plate fitted and many did not, it was introduced during the Battle of Britain and there are many examples of differences during this period. This example is a pre war version from 1938

@@ChampionScaleModelling Got it. Makes sense. I assumed the seat armour was standard. But looking more closely I found that Spitfires before June 1940 didn't have seat armour. Glad to see you are taking accuracy into account in your build.
