Your comment about colors at a distance is spot on. I think it was Lance Mindheim who advised modelers that WEATHERING AND COLORS DO NOT SCALE. Therefore, all your weathering and colors (like reds, yellows, greens, blues,) in general have to be subdued and "greyed" from the actual color that you think you see, to be effective on your model and background painting.

A lot of close-up photos of N-Scale modeling reveals ragged edges, 2" thick scale paint, 6" scale track ballast and 3" scale clumps of parking lot dirt - which gives credence to "size does matter." And the closeups in your video demonstrate that realistic scale modeling is "easily"🤔 achievable by using the ultra-thin paint and washes and techniques shown herein. Amazing work Jason.🤗 Thanks for sharing your methods. 🚂Lawrence

Dear Jason, definitely get your example on the fading black cars when photographed on a football field. That fade can indeed only be achieved by avoiding black. Might just be there’s an almost infinite amount of grey shades to achieve that particular effect on a small footprint to visually extend the depth of field. Very much like those MIG washes and the effect they create. Might indeed be easier than using oil paint and washing ‘m down, however the character of oils is of course that they’re even more translucent than the enamels. Humbly think that acrylics can be used in similar fashion, although thinned down even further. And of course not with odorless thinner, but with water and a dispersal agent, in a wet on wet application. Very much like the build/paint job. Looking forward to seeing your next episodes! Cheerio

Unfortunately for scale modelers, but fortunately for environement, we don't have plastic straws anymore in Europe, even at Starbucks. So, now, we have, most of the time, carton made straws where you can see some "wavy" structure (because they seem to be made like a "spring made of carton") that does not suit at all our needs . And when you use them to drink, you can't leave them in your drink in between the sips, otherwise they start to soften and fall apart. From this perspective, it's quite a pain, actually.

@@mpetersen6 Hello. :) Thank you for your suggestion. It sounds like a good idea because, in addition, this kind of cables can be bent in an easy way, which is not the case for straws. :) Cheers ! :)

Hi Jason! I love your channel, I've been watching a lot and learning so much. You've changed my mind and inspired me to incorporate more structures into my layout design. I'm an O-scaler however, so I'm a bit jealous of the amount of kits available to HO-er's. I had two questions which I hope haven't already been asked or addressed in other videos. I understand the overall concept of your layout, but would you be able to incorporate a new or newer building/business on your layout or would that clash too much with the overall aged and weathered look? Any suggestions on incorporating a mix of aged and newer structures? And finally I have a request if possible, could you model a property in disrepair? Maybe abandoned or fire damaged? I would love to see what you could come up with. You're such a creative person and I'm very happy to have found your channel! Thanks!! Ben

Hi Jason, nice techniques. Great ideas with simple materials for extra details that look realistic. I’ve tried the thread for wires and it seemed to always get the fuzzies. It got worse over time from the enemy (dust), maybe it was cheap thread, I don’t know. I didn’t soak it, like you mentioned, so I will try that. Nice looking industrial structure, always impressed with your level of knowledge and skills. Thanks again for another great video. Take care of yourself!

The color does not change regardless of distance. The effect you are referring to is called "atmospheric perspective", and only happens when fog, pollution, weather and high humidity affect the atmosphere, and at great distances. It does not appear under typical circumstances at close proximity. That said, you can choose to use lighter color if that's your preference, but it's artistic license only.
