It's worth mentioning that drop-frame formats (23.976, 29.97 or 59.94) are hold-overs from older synch technology, and reasons to use them are disappearing. If you don't need to synch multiple cameras or audio using SMPTE time code, sticking to a non-drop frame format (24, 30 or 60) can make the math a little easier when timing keyframes, etc. In neither case are frames of video dropped when mixing footage of different formats. Time code is simply a way of assigning an identifying number to each frame of video. Footage of different formats can be safely combined within a project without frames being lost. Non-linear editors are smart enough to accommodate the differences.

Jason pointed me to this explanation and I 'think' I get it now. What always confused me was people would say "I shoot in 23.96 or 29.97" and I could never figure out why the 'choose' to shoot in 23.97 instead of 24. I am guessing now that it is what the camera shoots in, and they may have a choice between say 23.97 and 29.97, or between 24 or 30), but it is the camera manufacturer that decides whether they only offer the dropped frame rate formats, and it is not so much the user's choice. So a user does not normally have the option to shoot either 23.97 or 24 when using a specific camera. Is that correct?

So if i shot my video in 60fps, i must use slower timeline fps like 30 or 24fps to slow motion my 60fps video? I've tried to use 30fps timeline for 60fps video, but when I'm slowed it down by 50%, the fps became 15fps, is that ok?

I have a problem I shot a lecture accidentally 29.97 frame rate. The audio and video is out of sync. I'm trying to get the footage to frame rate 24fps. When I pulled the clip onto timeliness itwas100% speed and 50.000fps the audio wave form is shorter than the video as well. Can this be fixed???? Help!

You could create different timelines with the frame rate you want to use. Then when you render, you can just set up a render job for each timeline you've got.

@@JasonYadlovski Wasn't sure I'd get a reply haha you're the man! I'm hoping to splice each together. I guess I'd just drag each timeline in a 'master timeline' and render that one? Just am not sure what to expect rendering multiple resolutions/fps from one timeline. Also, does it necessarily matter what I should set my project to? Is it best to set project to highest resolution filmed, or does it not matter since I can set each timeline to anything? I know how to edit each individually, but never tried to using each camera on one video. Thanks again!!

Very interesting video, thanks for sharing. While the trick with the clip attributes works for video (let's say it was shoot in 60fps and my timeline has 30fps), somehow my linked audio track is not in lower speed. Do you know how to handle this, such that my video (now in 30fps) is synchronized with the audio track? Thanks in advance. :)

Jason, I do have questions regarding the Frame Rates for projects. What if you change the frame rate on a current Timeline? I am already working on a project, and I see that my timeline is set to 30 FPS, but my videos are shot at 48 FPS. Do they change to be the same as the timeline preserving the quality? Also, if I want to do a speed ramp after changing the FPS on a video from 60 FPS to 30 FPS, can I speed it up and slow it down? Thank you so much in advance. This tip is HUGE!

Hi! I'll see if I can answer your questions: - If you change the timeline frame rate after you started working, it can mess things up - the footage/animations, etc. might not look right. I'd say you should create a new timeline with the frame rate you want, then copy from one timeline and paste into the new timeline. - When is comes to speed ramping or changing the clip speed, sure you can still do that. Just because you change the clip fps from 60 to 30 in the media pool, you will still have the options to change the speed once it's in the timeline. Hope this helps!

I'd use 24 for the timeline. Then you can change the clips to playback at 24 (in the midia pool or in the timeline) and they will playback in slow. If you don't change the slow clips frame rate, it will just playback in realtime.

Hi Jason, from your tutorial it seems that the only way to reset a 120fps video is to do the entire video in the media pool. What I want to do is take a portion of the video (using cut page set in and out points and smart append to my timeline) and play it in my timeline at the set 30fps for the timeline then copy that part, append to the end of the timeline and change the speed so that the copied part is now in slow motion. That doesn't seem to work and I assume because changing even a small part of a clip (a clip is a file, right?) changes the whole clip. Do you have an easy way to just have slow motion for just a small part of the file? Maybe an adjustment clip?

Hi! You don't have to only change the frame rates in the media pool, you could leave your clip as it was filmed, drop it into the timeline, then set particular clips to particular frame rates. To do that, you'd just right click the clip in the timeline, choose clip attributes, go to the video section and change the frame rate for that particular clip. This should allow you to accomplish what you are trying to do I think.

If you set the export or the project settings to a higher frame rate than the video, does that cause horizontal striking?

I’m not sure if it would cause striking or not, but that’s not the proper way to export the project. The export Framerate should match the timeline Framerate.

Sure, you can do it, it might just not look exactly how you want. But try changing the retime controls to optical flow and one of the higher motion estimation settings - speed warp being the best but also the most taxing on your machine.

Beginner on Davinci Resolve, your video is really informative. Still having a question here: What if I'm using footage in 2 different frame rates in the same video? In my case which is 30fps (generally 90% of my footage) and 24fps( because this is the recommended rate in night scene and to avoid light flickering). What fps should i use for my timeline then? Should I make it a 30fps timeline, then only adjust those 24fps clips as shown at 14:50?

I guess it depends, so if most of your footage is in 30fps and that's the more important footage, I'd probably go with a 30fps timeline. In a 30 fps timeline, that 24fps clip might be little jittery, but you can use things like optical flow and the retime settings in the inspector/project settings to help fix that. I think that's better than going with a 24fps timeline for one clips and having 90% of your footage look jittery because a 30fps clip won't playback smooth in a 24fps timeline. Does that help?

Quick question, I am new to the editing game and shot some drone footage at 29.97 by mistake. I want to use it in a 23.976 timeline. Is there anything wrong with using the footage, setting it to 23.976 in clip attributes and then speeding it up using speed change?

You can put the drone footage in the timeline, if you speed it up, there's probably not going to be any issues. If you play it back in Realtime, you might notice it looking jittery or dropping frames. You can try changing the retime controls for the drone footage in the inspector to make the playback better and smoother. That might help some.

Hello Jason, thank you so much with this video it helped me out with how post production functions however I have a serious question that I’m stuck with. If I would to shoot my product videography at 1080p 60fps, should my timeline be 4k 30fps or 1080p 30fps? Would the footage be shaky? Or like jello effect? I tried with google but nothing really helped. Imma try some tests but please I would love your answer on it. Thanks.

You're welcome! Glad the video was helpful! So if you shot at 1080, 60fps, I'd use a timeline of 30fps. For me, I'd probably go w/ a 1080 timeline because it will be easier to edit in. If you are in Resolve, you can always change the timeline resolution at anytime to be 4K. If you go with 4K, you'll want to upscale the footage so it looks good. The 60fps footage should look fine and when yo slow it down, in Resolve you can use stabilization along with changing the retime controls to Optical Flow and Motion Estimation to one of the higher settings than the standard. I've got videos on all this stuff. 😜 Typically I film in 1080, edit in 1080 and export in 4K. Hope this helps!

Because I was always confused, and I believe you may have talked about it. But the 1080p to changing to 4k when exporting would be smoother? Or I always thought it was the other way around to get that sharp image type of video?

Changing the resolution has nothing to do with the video looking 'shaky' or not being smooth. It's just adding pixels essentially. If you filmed a shaky video and don't stabilize it, it's gonna look shaky. hi Jason, I hope that you don’t mind a follow-up question regarding frame rates. If I want to take video of my daughter’s sports event, if I shoot at 50 fps, I assume that the output will be 50 fps as well. (The video will consist of only the game, nothing else.) If I don’t plan to use slow motion or have a talking head on screen, what is the benefit of shooting at 50 fps instead of 25 fps? Is there a noticeable difference when watching a game at 50 fps instead of 25 fps on KZfaq? Thanks for your help. Very helpful video as always.

Shooting and rendering at 50p will be beneficial for sports video, since it makes the nuances of the action clearer and sharper. A lot of live sports broadcast are done in 50 or 60 frames per second (depending on the region) for that reason. If, say, you were doing a documentary about a sport, then 25p works great because it's more narrative in nature and 25p will have a cinematic, "documentary" look, and it's less important to see what exactly happened in a specific play, etc. and more about the feel of the footage. But if it's important to clearly see the action (and not just motion blur or choppy movement that's suggestive of action in a story-teller fashion), then the higher frame-rate will be helpful

More frame per second usually uses more data. but If you specify bitrate then the bitrate will determine the file size. But if the scene was really busy(lots of movement or you were panning ) then your bitrate should be set high enough to handle the action. if you choose higher frame rate but low bit rate you may get artifacts or blockiness or dropped frames . so they are separate but bitrate can effect quality especially if there is lots of movement in the scene

Great video! Frame rates always confused me, especially that pop-up asking if I wanted to change it. So I have a big question regarding folks like me who record all their content on their phones. Do you know if it's possible to change the frame rate on a cellphone? Or am I stuck with whatever frame rate the phone records? If I had a real camera I could probably figure it out, can't afford a real camera right now. Not even a used one. (Well, I could if the landlord wasn't so insistent on getting rent from me every month.) I realized that not every phone is the same and that this is probably a big ask. But if you do know a way that might work, I know I'd be grateful. Thank you.😮

Thanks! Yes you can change the frame rate on a phone - at least on iPhones which is what I’ve always had. I don’t know about android phones since I’ve never had one. On an iPhone, you go into your settings, then the camera, and you can adjust your video settings in there. There’s not a whole lot of options, but you do have a few options.

@Jason Yadlovski Thank you. I think I figured it out. I have an Android, specifically a Samsung Galaxy S23. I found the higher frame rate by exploring the camera. On the new Samsung, when I open the camera, I have 4 choices of what I want to do: take a Portrait, take a Photo, record a Video, and More. I went to the More screen, and there are 12 modes for the camera to use, with 3 settings specifically for video: Super Slow-Mo, Slow Motion, and something called Hyperlapse. I'm guessing that's for doing time lapse stuff. So I will be experimenting with them to see what's what. Oh, and I can drag and drop an icon for any of the photo/video modes onto my home screen. That way, I can switch out one mode for another without a bunch of hassle. There are also a couple of older Samsungs in the house, so I'll check them to see if they have these choices, too. But they may only be on my current Samsung. Also, there's there's one choice called Expert RAW. Apparently, it's a separate app downloadable from the Samsung Galaxy Store. Since I have no idea what RAW is, I am just going to leave that for now.

When using two cameras with mixed frame rates, one at 30 & the other at 120 FPS, I want some of the 120 FPS clips to play in slo-mo and others in normal time. My method is to set the initial timeline frame rate to the higher rate of 120. Both the 30 and 120 clips will play normally and the 120 can be slowed to 24% for good slow motion. This works well for me, or is there a better way?

I agree, I'd set the timeline frame rate at the desired deliverable frame rate. You can still top in the 120 clip and it will play in realtime, and if you want slowmo, just change the FPS of that 120 clip in the timeline. Just take what you were thinking and swap it....😜

Is there going to be any interpolation and, consequently, any frame loss if I change 60fps in clip attributes to 30fps, then put the clip on the 30fps timeline, and speed it up to 200% (to get the normal speed instead of slo-mo)?

If you are in DaVinci Resolve, you can just drop the clip into the timeline and it should play back at normal speed, not slow mo, automatically. It will just play every other frame to get 30fps. It should look fine and you shouldn't have any any loss of quality.

Question: Lets say I shoot a sequence in 120 FPS..(slomo) and my time line is always 24fps... according to this post, it will look jittery, so what to do if that is what i want to use 9Frame rate wise...), Same if I want to do 240 FPS (slomo), using a time line that is 24 fps. So if you have a 24fps timeline, you can slow down your 120 fps clip to 24 pts and it should look nice and smooth. It will be at 1/5th the speed of the original clip. (120/24 = 5). The 240 clip can also be slowed to 24 fps and will be at 1/10th the speed (240/24 = 10). Both clips will look smooth and run with no problems. Where are you run into the problems is if your frame rate for the timeline is not an even multiple of your higher Framerate that you wanna make him to slow motion

Yes, that’s correct unless you wanted to play back in real time, in that case, just drop it in the timeline without changing the frame rate of the clip.

You can render just audio and no video if you want. But otherwise you’d make a freeze frame and make that frame as king as you want.

Helpful explanation about playback 6ofps in 30pfs timeline. So why not to film everithing in 60fps and decide in post if you want slow motion? Sometimes your know that you want slowmo, so you set up your camera to 60fps or more, but what if you`re not sure?

Thats an option, but the disadvantages of always filming at high frame rate is it uses more data on your SD card and harddrive and more importantly 24 fps is what classic cinema is filmed on, it can look better(more cinematic) due to the slight motion blur when things move.

Sometimes 60 FPS isn't gonna look the best due to less natural motion blur. Doesn't mean you can't use it, just depends on the look you want.

Hi! Are you using the Free Version of Resolve? I think you are limited on frame rate and resolution in the free version. Studio should give you access to all the frame rates and resolutions. Just curious, why do you need to export in 100 fps? Maybe try a 50 fps timeline, it should playback find in there....🤔

I have 6 clips all shot at 29.973 fps. 5 are already used in a timeline at 29.973 fps. While watching this video I went to the I went to the Media pool and looked at the different clips to see their info like you did. Then the one clip I have not used in the Timeline when clicking on the clip and going to CLIP ATTRIBUTES it brought up the clip attributes panel and it said it was 29.97 fps. I clicked on the down arrow and up comes a list of frame rates so I change it to 59.94 and it does change to 59.94. So I try to change a 29.97 clip I have used in the timeline and it causes Davinci to implode White screen and ask if I want to close Davinci or waite. Apparently one can up the fps of a clip if it has not been used in the timeline.

You can change the clip fps via clip attributes, but if it was only filmed in 29.97, there's not going to be enough info in the clip for playback at 59.94. It's going to look choppy. In general, on a clip, you can go from a higher Frame rate to a lower frame rate, but not a lower frame rate to a higher frame rate. Unless you use something like super scale or speed warp in which Resolve will create frames for you.

I have sped up frame rates when doing stop motion videos and I found it caused an odd blur/ghost effect. The frames were basically overlapping.

What if we have multiple frame rates in a single story for example a short film, where it has normal dialogue scenes 24 fps and as well as fast action phase scene for slowmo at 60 fps. How can i edit this in single time line ? There is no answers for in youtube. Everyone just fps differences only.

Ideally if you have footage in 60 fps that you will slow down for slowmo, You want the talking head to be at 30fps. If you have 24 fps for dialogue ideally you want your slowmo to be a multiple of 24. If that's not possible because it's already filmed, I'd make the 60 fps footing 24fps then enable optical flow and make the retime better. Okay, this video cleared up so much that I was stumbling over. Thank you❗But why is there a 30fps and a 29.97fps? A 24fps and a 23.976fps? Why didn't "they" just settle on 24 and 30 and forget about having 2 Frame Rates within 0.004 frames different? Are 30fps and 29.97fps completely interchangeable in my Sony a7IV and in Resolve on the timeline? Or do I have to choose either 30 or 29.97 and make sure I don't waver between them on a timeline? IOW, is a 29.97fps clip next to a 30fps clip on a 30fps timeline a big rookie screw-up, or does it just really not matter in a 15 minute video? 🙃😵💫

Jason, Usually checkout your Fairlight vids, this one was good but you did not touch on the 'Gravy' which is shutter angle. I usually shoot in 23.976 and 96fps for frame packing, and a straight 180 degree shutter angle is NOT set in stone. I shoot mostly outside locations both in camera color and monochrome and don't do vlog, blog, demonstrations, so your mileage will vary. Your vids point was to explain DaVinci timeline/project frame rates, but the feel of any visual medium is mostly a product of the film gate in relation to fps ~ i.e. shutter speed/angle is where the magic lives. Some will argue that a 180 angle correlates to a shutter speed that is acceptable for any rate and slomo manipulations. Delivery timeline speed and amount of baked in source footage motion blur that exists within each individual frame will be a factor as well as the number of frames, whether doing straight fps conversion or dropping, adding/duplicating frames. Keep up the quality vids!

You don't get the Filmic look, unless you also shoot with the 180 degree shutter rule. So the shutter speed in your camera should be double that of your framerate. Also, if you're recording in high FPS, make sure to also bump up the bitrate. A video shot at 120 FPS, will have a fourth of the information per frame of a 30 FPS video, if you don't. The outcome being, that your "nice" slowmo shots look very compressed.

So you can set your project frame rate to match your footage frame rate. Got it. But I think you said you can set your timeline frame rate to be different to your project frame rate. Why would you want to do that? Where would that help/be useful/be necessary?

Correct, the timeline frame rate can be different than your project settings frame rate. You might do this if you have footage in different frame rates that you might want to edit differently or for example, say you filmed all your footage at 120 fps because the whole video (or maybe a short) is going to be in slow motion. In that case you might want a timeline frame rate at 30 so the 120 footage can all be slowmo. Does that help?

Need help guys... Recently got a PC instead of Mac and on iMovie, I would simply drag my gopro footage which is 120fps into the timeline and the footage would play at normal speed after taking the slow motion off in the settings... Then I could just split sections of the video and slow motion certain parts easily... Now.. When I drag in these clips to Davinci, it puts the fps to 60 but the video is sped up. I try setting it to 120fps and it goes even fast... I have tried changing the fps to 30 24 and so on but it does nothing... Why is it doing this?

Make your timeline the lowest framerate you want. For example 30fps. Then drop in your clip and it will playback in real-time. You can then split the clip and make it slow mo by changing the clip speed.

@@JasonYadlovski Yeah but then it gets choppy... The native frame rate is 120fps, in iMovie, I swear it keeps it at 120fps and doesn't stuff the speed up. GoPro automatically turns 120fps into slow mo. iMovie keeps it that way but when you turn slow mo off it plays exceptionally smooth. Changing fps in DaVinci stuffs the speed up. When I change the timeline to 60 or 30 at the start, 60 is slightly sped up, 30 is choppy... is it because I have the free version? why can't 120fps native footage just play back normally.

Tell me why is that. I have footage recorded in my camera H264 [H265 not supported] FPS is 30 but Davinci says its 29.97 . So i switched to 29.97 but after rendering in H 264 in 29.97 entire video is interlaced. This Davinci make only problems for me :(

I would just change the timeline frame rate to 30 in Resolve. Then it matches the clips and you are good to go. Don’t let resolve set the frame rate automatically when you bring in your clips.

@@JasonYadlovski this is my biggest disater .Everytime i am importing footage it always asking me fps change .Now my entire project which i done is basicly is for nothing as timeline is 29.97 .I wasnt even able to render in h265 as footage is h264 . After i added some subtitles i see Davinci is starting to choke .But biggest disaster is with fps after render .I am making videos 30-60+ minutes and seems i need to check earlier if it will be interlaced . There is basicly no differences between 29.97 and 30 but still Davinci make so much problem with it and this interlace is biggest problem .Oh i am using studio 17 . Drivers can be problem too? For graphic card ?

If you’re on a PC, you should definitely check your drivers. Make sure if you’re using a Nvidia graphics card, make sure you are using the studio driver, the most current version. If you want to change that your project frame rate, just create a new timeline with the frame rate that you want, go into your existing timeline, copy everything and then go into the new timeline with the correct frame rate and paste everything in there. It should all work just fine And you can always keep both timelines just in case.

Aroud 10 days ago i had similar problem with other video when i wanted to make intro When i decided to make no intro no subtitles just animation button all was fine no interlaced picture but this is not the way i want upload videos . Previous video was 24 fps so i kept it .But now i changed fps in my camera to 30 and i have more problems . OH and i am using davinci 17 studio not 18 but i have old drivers since i bought my card its old card but its fine 1660 super. So my solution is studio version drivers to avoid interlaced picture ?

Hey! Sounds like you're using the free version, is that correct? The Free version only allows you to go to 60 fps. But you could use a 50 fps timeline, then your footage would playback fine in realtime and if you wanted slowmo, you could slow it down by 50% in a 50fps timeline and it will look nice and smooth.

If you edit videos often, it's 100% worth paying the one time price, then you've got it for life with all upgrades. Then you'll be able to use your GPU and Resolve should work better overall. Plus all of the tools, effects, etc. are unlocked.

Nice video and all, but that was a bad example at 2:48. That is the same clip interpolated. Not true to what really is the difference between 30 vs 23.976fps. I don't even know if that argument over motion blur at 1/50 and 1/60 is valid. That difference is negligible when it comes to that.

Why is there a 23.976 fps and a 24 fps. Why do you choose 23.976 instead of 24 fps. Is there any practical difference, really? I’ve never understood why this minor difference exists. There is a similar 29.97 vs 30 fps. Why?

Don’t get hung up on 24fps, not everything is a movie. 30fps makes sync to music easier because you have more frames to sync to each second, also you don’t have jerky movement when you pan too fast. They control for this when they film movies but likely you won’t.

@John W. Your suggestion to use 30fps means the camera setting, right? Because filming in 24fps then changing to 30fps in Resolve causes Resolve to "fake/engineer" an additional 6 frames per second, right? Or maybe Resolve steals 6 frames from second #2, 12 frames from second #2, etc, etc. Disclaimer: I saw your comment before starting Jay's video, which I'm about to watch now, and maybe he will answer this question within the video. I see his response below to your comment and it is more about the music sync'ing. Thanks for your comment.

Whatever Framerate you film in, that’s what you want to use for your timeline frame rate as well. (Not for slow no or high frame rates) They should match. If you film in 24, make your timeline 24, if you film in 30, make your timeline 30.

Make sure the timeline FPS is 30. Then you can slow down your 120 clip to 25% in the timeline OR change the Frame rate of the 120 clip to 30 and it should playback at 1/4 the speed.

I've had this effect. In my case it was because, although I changed the frame rate of a clip (by right-click and changing the little 'clock' dialogue box) I hadn't changed the clip DURATION, so that displaying at 30 fps then plays only half the video duration. If you change the fps and the duration (by the same factor but the first decreased and the second increased) then the whole clip will play in slowmo. Took me a while to figure that out, as with everything in Resolve (ie the manual could be written rather more clearly IMO).

Never use 24 fps if you intend to show it on a screen. It's only for film. A sceen can't show a 24 frames clip correctly causing jitters. This is because some frames gets shown twice the time as its next frame. The target audience matters. More important is the 180 rule and know when to not follow it. A 24 fps clip, rendered out to 24 fps will jitter on a monitor or screen.
