Javascript is super popular, in fact, it is the most used programming language today. But in the freelance world, not so much.

@@StefanMischook In the video titled, "How to Start Freelancing in 2024", you said that "the web is the key to freelancing" . That includes using three primary languages: HTML, CSS and Javascript. Although Javascript can be elided or replaced with PHP, C++, Java etc, for the back-end/server-side programming as we have many more choices, for client side programming Javascript is essential and the only practical option if you want any interactivity at all in your web pages. I am new to Web development and freelancing myself, so it is quite confusing when you say that for Freelancing, Web-dev should be your focus but also that Javascript is not important. So if I understand you correctly, in this video you are emphasizing the importance of PHP for the back-end, regardless of the necessity of Javascript for the front-end.

Given the focus on freelance web development set apart from contracted (web?) software development, which platform would be the best to focus on first? I would think WordPress. Based on everything ive come across, i would probably look into applying my amateur skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript with WordPress & Bricks with Cloudways for hosting. Im a little worried about more complex functionality and how you have to write PHP to interact with the WordPress CMS and attached database.

Very different. But you can start freelancing with Wordpress with perhaps 10-15hrs of learning it. A lot of WP work is just config and knowing the ecosystem. Building WP themes requires HTML5, CSS3 and PHP skills .. but nothing overly complex.

@@StefanMischook Do you take on more custom WP development projects or do you mostly use builders like Elementor? I've been on Fiverr for years, I get a few projects a month using only Elementor. All the PHP I've ever needed to use I got snippets online, now AI just generates it. I've thought about getting more into developing WP themes, but recently decided to learn JS because I'm tired of making pennies building Elementor sites. I get inquiries all the time for all types of web applications that I CAN'T build, and it bothers me. I have no idea what path to take or how to take my freelance game to the next level :\

The clients typically ask you the per hour rate but then will want a fixed price! So they don’t track your time and they shouldn’t frankly IF they are on fixed price.

Some kind of my manifesto, from a meta perspective ;) Forget about the mainstream and the small buisnesses, youre the builder, go your own way. Be an Entrepeneur. Should/would you be a freelance slave forever and stuck in their limited tech stacks and minds forerver? If they don't want to scale up and don't want to go with the flow, not your problem. Think small as they do and be small, in my opinion is a waist of "your" time. The modern JS tech stack gives you so much opportunities that outweighs the old lamp stack, Wordpress, Drupal, you name it , this kind of stuff, etc. . So boring ...

But I really do not like WordPress and won't work with it. I don't have to. That said, the last small freelance project I did focused heavily on JS. I had to take 4 user inputs, carry out several calculations and then output the result on the page. I didn't know how to do it without JS 🤔
