Jaw-dropping Lion Pride Hunts Buffalo & Grieving Herd's Unexpected Return

7 жыл бұрынAn incredible lions vs buffalo sighting, rather dramatically described in the media as "one of the rarest and most heartbreaking scenes ever captured in the wild", of the Mangheni lionesses catching a buffalo turned into an even more amazing sighting when the buffalo herd returned to try to revive their fallen teammate.
It is not uncommon for buffalo herds to try to rescue a member that has been taken by lions, or even chasing lions from a meal, but I have never seen a herd licking and nudging a member of the group that is already dead.
This lion vs buffalo encounter has since gone viral on many platforms but this is the original clip.

Filmed in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa
This video of lions vs buffalo contains scenes that may be too graphic for sensitive viewers The lion pride do actually stalk and catch the buffalo, the buffalo herd does chase the lion pride and try to revive their fallen colleague. Lion and Buffalo are eternal enemies. Humans influenced neither the chase, the behaviour of the lions, nor the behaviour of the buffalo. Thanks so much for your videos. I particularly like your minimalist commentary throughout these. A word here, a word there. Calmly spoken. In other channels there is often loud interaction and nervous laughter and chatter of those watching. Without quiet and respectful witness to such events, I think that those observers miss out on the full experience of 'being there' during these moments. Your approach seems to me to influence those accompanying you in your vehicle, to their benefit, and ours. It is always a pleasure to watch.

It's so crazy how basicly the lions apply a choke hold on it, limiting its oxygen and then it's a done deal. Somehow very similar to human fighting where a choke hold will end a fight fast.

Usually they like to go for the neck like most predators. That is to make the prey bleed out ( from the jugular vein ) or paralyze it by destroying the spine.

Sexy Homeowner Well actually no, the hold on the neck is the same basic concept-they clamp down on the windpipe to suffocate the prey. The problem with buffalo is that their neck is just too thick for a lioness’ mouth to properly asphyxiate (a male lion usually can, however, which is why they’re sometimes seen joining the hunt when there’s a fully-grown buffalo involved), so instead she’ll go for the nose and mouth and bite through the nostrils so that the buffalo basically starts inhaling and eventually drowning in its own blood.

Good job, great catch! I so love watching them stalk their prey! Awesome camera work, great sound. It's crazy how the lion are able to cover the mouth of their prey, able to stop the sound..Very smart of them. Thank you Rob, for all you do! Your certainly the best out there! Peace~ P.S. I have seen domestic milk cows do this to "say goodbye" to a cow that was shot by a drive by killer. They each (30) came over one at a time to sniff and then they left, seeming sad for the rest of the day.

Buffalo always come back too late. If they were smarter (etc...come back immedality , because they're huge animals) and within a huge herd could take on any loin and they would never lose any heard members. But they just don't have the brainpower

+TheSalonGuy thanks! After so many years of photo safaris the animals don't see the vehicles as a threat, they see humans as a predator therefore not a potential meal. Not being food, nor a threat, means they don't pay any attention to us

+TheSalonGuy it's very possible as you would be directly entering their personal space and they would see that as a threat and react accordingly. It would be different approaching on foot from a distance as the animal has time to react and move off or give some kind of warning.

Large herbivores like buffalo, zebra, wildebeest , gazelle , elephants, giraffe and antelope of all kinds play crucial roles in the ecosystems they live in primarily through aiding the biodiversity of plant life which other creatures depend on and being landscape architects through their natural habits, so like it or not having them around is important.
