Wild Lioness Hunts Down Young Buffalo! | Amazing Lion Vs Buffalo Encounter

A lone lioness with newborn cubs hidden nearby shown catching a young buffalo by a suffocating grip on its nose and mouth.
The young buffalo was chased out of a herd by the lioness which is why it was alone. Lions catch buffalo regularly but with the drought the buffalo are in a weakened state so the lions have found it easier than usual to bring down their prey.
Despite the fact the buffalo is young it still weighs more than the lone lioness and it takes a while for her to overpower the prey.
Epic Lion vs Buffalo encounter
The lioness was alone due to having newborn cubs, as mentioned earlier. Although she would rejoin the pride from time to time she had to return to the den regularly to let the cubs suckle. This encounter with the buffalo occurred within meters of the den, meaning the rest of the lion pride was far away and did not join the meal.

Textbook. I have seen 10 lionesses sit behind a buffalo, without a single one realizing that the only way they were going to kill the animal was to suffocate it. By biting its mouth shut, this lioness immediately begins the suffocation process while at the same time shutting up the buffalo to prevent it from crying for help from its herd

David Navarro Lions always do, with exception to rare circumstances. If a carnivore eats before the animal has passed, it’s because the carnivore doesn’t have the ability to do it any other way. Typically because they are not strong or big enough. Such as dogs. Painted dogs have the ability to kill large prey, as a pack. But they are simply to small to wrap their jaws around the necks or mouths of something like a buffalo. They would never be able to suffocate a buffalo. Therefore, the tactic changes. One will hold the nose down, while the others do the rest of the work, unfortunately while the prey animal is still alive

@@vn8375 They absolutely have the ability to bring them down and kill them first. But dogs don't because they simply can't protect the kill from other bigger predators. Therefore, they have to eat is ASAP. Which means that, unfortunately for the animal, being eaten whilst it's still alive. Nothing to do with size, the numbers and teamwork compensate for their size.

Lions dont kill the prey out of mercy. They kill it because it will make their life much easier while eating it. But if the prey is already paralyzed by any reason they will directly proceed to ripping the flesh

As always amazing footage! I was just wondering? The lions time of recovery after a kill appears to take a Lil while? Is this on account of them sleeping most of the day? You know like a human who doesn't exercise will be short of breath maybe walking of some stairs?

It amazes me how the Lioness can just stand there and let people that pictures of her. My girl would freak if someone tried to look at her while eating lol

If there was one thing I could ask of humans with regard to the animal kingdom, it's this: animals aren't human. I _totally_ get why humans have 'un-learned' our understanding of and respect for the animal kingdom. We have evolved out of the food chain, and most of our experiences with wild animals are remote, via TV and the internet. For every program that shows you natural history/wildlife without narrative, there are two that name the animals and imbue them with human characteristics. Anthropomorphism. There's very little conscious cruelty and no unconscious cruelty in the non-human world. When you see a lioness take down a buffalo in the manner depicted here, it's all about survival. There's nothing nefarious going on in that lioness's brain. She needs to eat to survive. She needs to feed her progeny so they can survive. With almost no exception, animals exist to exist. They eat and they procreate. We're in an extremely privileged position as humans. Sure, you _can_ be a meal for a big cat, a croc, a shark or a bear. But if you live in a developed nation, the odds of that happening are astronomical. You're far more likely to die from a mosquito bite than a shark chomp. Or being struck by lightning. Or at the hands of a fellow human. The better our understanding of animals' simple motives, survival and propagation, the better we are as a species.

We have not "evolved out of the foodchain". God made plants and animals for us, humans to use. Read the Bible!

@@MalminOG wait wait, wasn't every animal a plant eater and humans needed no food? After the forbidden fruit story old age, animals became carnivores,etc? Adam lived together with all the animal and what not.
