Alex Kintner was the boy who was attacked out on his raft -- Several decades after the filming of Jaws (1975), Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.

Quint was always on borrowed time after he escaped death the first time on the USS Indianapolis. His obsession with killing sharks end up killing him. I love the way he sees his own death and describes it before it happens.

As a child. My family went for a swim in a lake on a windy day. My father thought I was old enough to learn to swim in deep water. So he dragged me to the center of the lake, and left me there to learn how to swim on my own. I spent the next 10 minutes screaming and crying as I tried to swim to shore. The whole time my father and uncle were on the side of the lake smoking cigarettes and telling me to hurry up because they saw sharks chasing me. I understand your terror at sharks.

I was 13 when I saw this movie in the theaters for the first time. I was blown away by it. I didn't have cable streaming video or DVDs back then, so I saw it in the theaters 5 times that summer. I decided I wanted to be a marine biologist and study sharks. Sadly that never happened, but to this day, I remain fascinated by sharks.

17:45 The reason the shark isn't shown much is because it was a mechanical shark and kept breaking down. Spielberg's solution was to show the shark's pov, use music cues to indicate its presence, use of props, like the barrels, etc.

I loved watching the both of you react to this movie. I saw this in a crowded theatre at the NJ seashore when it opened in 1975 and I am not exaggerating that one of my fondest memories is being among a full house jumping out of their seats throughout this movie.

My only critique is I wish you had left the entirety of quints speech about the Indianapolis. It was 100% true and I think the best scene in the whole movie. If you watch Richard Dreyfus in background, that look of open mouthed awe was real as the actor knew that scene was one for the ages

I live in Adelaide South Australia where a lot of the underwater footage for JAWS was shot by Ron and Valerie Taylor at a place called Dangerous reef. The man in the cage was not Richard Dreyfus but a very small stand in diver. The cage was smaller too so that when the real shark came up to the cage it looked bigger. The footage of the shark entangled with the cage was a fluke it just happened to get court up but got free again by it's self. The director liked the shot and put it in the movie. Sadly in the late 90s near the same filming spot a teenaged boy was skiing behind a boat and a real Great white shark attacked him and he lost his life.

I don't believe Quint destroyed the boat on purpose. He was obsessed with killing the shark though . It was a personal obsession for him to kill the shark and he didn't want anyone to help him do it. His experiences in World War II scarred him for life, turning that life into a personal quest for revenge against sharks.

The mechanical shark was called "Bruce." The filmmakers had A LOT of trouble with it. So much so that Spielberg and the main cast helped re-write the script and plot beats while on set in Martha's Vineyard to hide the shark for as long as possible. Much of the dialog was ad libbed (made up on the spot), even Roy Scheider's famous line: "I think we need a bigger boat." Robert Shaw (Quint) co-wrote the U.S.S. Indianapolis speech. Shaw was not just a seasoned actor, he was also a famous playwright. The dislike between Richard Dreyfuss (Hooper) and Shaw was real and they snarked at each other on and off camera. It worked great for the movie.

My family used to take a week's vacation down in Ormand Beach, Florida every year, and I had a raft like Alex Kitner's. My two cousins and I were paddling out past the breakers on one trip, and I saw a fin break the water not too far away. I FROZE. My cousins were shouting, and I couldn't hear over the sound of the ocean, and the fools started paddlling TOWARDS the fin! Then I saw another. I suddenly heard my name, and my mother yelling from the beach - SHAAAAAAARK!!! SHAAAAAARK!!! And try to understand that it is NOT EASY to hear someone distinctly through all that ocean noise, plus the boom boxes at the time, the sounds of the crowds, the seagulls, etc., but I heard my mother as clear as day. My name, followed by Shark, Shark. I practically turned into a human motor boat and ran over the top of the water to get back to shore. The last I saw of my poor cousins, they were still paddling towards the fins. My mother CLEARED THE BEACH with her cries. I mean it was a popular spot, and I clearly wasn't the only one who saw the movie, because many of us were doing Jesus impressions as we ran like cartoon characters over the wave crests. When I finally felt sand beneath my feet, I looked back to see my poor cousins STILL sitting on their rafts, with PORPOISES literally jumping all around them, playing like they had been training at Sea World. While I was chalk-white and shivering with adrenaline and terror, and my mother had terrified half a mile of beachfront property, my cousins were sitting out there having a completely different - completely MAGICAL experience with a school of near-dolphins. I was humiliated and embarassed, not to mention jealous because my brave and intelligent cousins had IMMEDIATELY figured out from the shape of the fins that they were NOT sharks, and moreover, that if there were any sharks around, the porpoises would probably protect them, so it was smarter to be near them. I still don't care at the end of the day, because I saw this movie when I was THREE years old (my parents couldn't find a babysitter), and I didn't learn to swim until I was seven because of it. Even then I was afraid of pools or even to take baths for fear that that stupid shark was going to come up out of the drain to get me somehow. TERRIFYING MOVIE. Gave me recurring nightmares of being stranded in the water and eaten for YEARS. Now it ranks among my favorite films of all time, but I still get that "sinking" feeling whenever I swim or go boating out in the ocean (even lakes freak me out a little). I just thank the powers that be for the Discovery Channel and Shark Week, and all the researchers who talked me down and instilled in me a great respect (and even begrudging admiration) for those aquatic beauties, because prior to that associated ratings grabber, I thought the worst about them. Thanks for another great reaction/review, and can't wait to see whatever's next!

My shark story: A few years ago I was swimming off the coast of Melbourne Beach, Florida and when started to get colder (early evening) a bunch of folks went out the jetty to fish. I caught a fish and just as I was pulling it up out of the water a shark jumped up and bit it off the hook, then a few seconds later, a guy about three people down from me had the same thing happen. It was just a few feet from where we had been swimming.

Here's a funny story: I went to see this movie with a group of friends. When that head popped out my friend to my left about ripped my arm out of its socket. Four years later her sister went with me to see Alien. I can't remember which scene it was but she about ripped my right arm out of its socket! Such good memories from the most fun summer of my life!

The shark was nicknamed Bruce after Spielberg's lawyer. It was built and operated by the guy who did the giant squid attacking the Nautilus in Disney's classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and was infamous for breaking down during filming.. And I love how Ben Gardner still shocks after all these years!!. BTW, fun fact: some shots of that scene were actually filmed in a swimming pool and apparently milk was added to make the water look 'ocean murky'.

One of my favorite movies and I recently saw it on the big screen for the first time local theater was showing in in 3D and digital loved it on the big screen because wow you get the size of Bruce then as only a theater can.

This was a great reaction, I've always loved seeing both of your enthusiasm and engagement with what you watch, both on this channel and your other one. This is a timeless classic of American cinema, and one of the best of director Steven Spielberg, who I happen to share a birthday with lol. It always instills in me a genuine and authentic dread of not only the ocean, but of the unknown in general, as when you walk through life, you don't always know or fully understand what you're getting yourself into until it swims up and bites you where it counts. If there's any other film I would recommend from him after this one, it would be my absolute favorite of his, as well as my personal favorite film of all time, the 1993 film "Jurassic Park". I grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, the island where the movie was filmed. It’s always been one of my favorites, and since it’s far to expensive to live there for me now, it’s a nice bit of nostalgia to see all the beaches and towns from my childhood. That movie scared the shit out of me too. I was about 7 and my brother 5 when our parents took us too the drive in to watch One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. We were too young to understand that so we watched this out of the back window and just screamed.

She was headed for Leyte, to join the task force at Okinawa in the closing days of WW2, after the huge attack there, which had lasted from April until June. Loaded with armament, she sank in twelve minutes. 300 of the 1195 crewmen went down with the ship. Up to 150 were killed by sharks. The mention of the ship still draws a moment of silence.

The explosion and the chum from the shark would probably draw tigers from hundreds of miles around, so their paddle back to the beach could probably be a movie all in itself.

I currently live in Orlando Florida, which is an hour away from the Gulf of Mexico and in the opposite direction. We are an hour away from the Atlantic Ocean. I grew up in Destin, Florida and Panama City, Florida, USA and we always knew as kids not to swim at sunrise or sunset, because that is when they feed typically. I am 39 now and we still see shark bites once or twice per year on the local news, but sharks really only come close to the shore when their food supply decreases during the summer months

Interesting enough, people often forget that this story was based on a real event where a series of shark attacks terrorized the East Coast (especially Montauk, New York) back in the early 1960s. FUN FACT: The shark in this movie was entirely mechanical. JAWS was one of the first prime examples of animatronics (mechanical puppets) in cinema and celebrated for its ingenuity for the time. Since computers weren't that advanced, Animatronics were pretty much the go-to way to operate big scary creatures from 1975 Jaws for over twenty years, most notably for the 1980s Alien franchise and the 1993 film, Jurrasic Park (and its early sequels).

It wasn't meant to be an exaggeration of how long a day without the beach feels.

Well. Bull sharks HAVE been caught in the Ganges (There's even a shark specifically called the Ganges Shark, it's its own subspecies native to the river) but the thing I'd be more worried about would be the killer catfish that have swelled to shark-like sizes from eating corpses. Jeremy Wade pulled a 9 foot long Goonch out of there with a mouth easily big enough to fit a guy's shoulders down its gullet..... Also this movie gave me nightmares for years. I've been through two tornadoes, a flood and a very scary plane landing over the years but THIS MOVIE is the thing that gave me nightmares...

If you start DC Comics movies soon, you might want to take my advice and do it in this order: Superman (1978) and Superman II (1981) are really good and a great place to start (you don't have to watch Superman III-IV, unless you want to). The same goes for Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) (also, you don't have to watch Batman Forever or Batman & Robin, unless you want to). After those, watch Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and then you can watch the DCEU movies that lead into today (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, etc.).

I way snockeling in the the Dominican Repubic around 25 years ago with my best friend Mark when i suddendly met a full on family of great nurse sharks. It was the best time of my life. I was a teen-ager when this came out and it freaked people out so much that some would not go into any body of water--not a river, not a lake, not even a swimming pool.

Hi! I just found your channel and you both are so wonderful. I want to tell you a story about the first time I saw this movie. I was about 11 yrs old and they played this movie on TV after it had been out of the theater for awhile. I had heard so many people say it was scary so I was afraid to watch it. I think my grandmother turned on the movie and then left the room to do something else. As I'm watching it I kept thinking this is interesting but it's not scary at all. Why are people saying this is scary? Then Hooper went in the water to check out the other boat and the face of the guy floated by. I was SO SCARED, lol. I left the room and didn't watch the rest of the movie until years later in life. I really love the movie now though. Thank you for the great reaction. : )

look up the story of Matawan New Jersey this is what the movie is based off of... I actually visited all those locations they have a memorial for the people that were killed... But yes I used to live in Northern New Jersey we used to go down the shore all the time... Here's my shark story I was about 10 years old or 11 years old this was back in the mid 80s.I was on vacation with my parents and my siblings and one morning we woke up we had Beach front hotel and we noticed a few people out there near something big on the beach...The town name is Wildwood crest New Jersey .. well anyway we walked out towards what people were looking at it was a shark washed up had no teeth and back then we didn't know too much about sharks... Well anyway it was a pretty fresh kill The body didn't smell yet And the shark was upright, So the kids in the area we took turns sitting on it while our parents took pictures... So I have a bunch of pictures of me as a kid sitting on top of a big shark...Then we took pictures of the body you know the mouth area and the whole body..Well anyway It had no teeth at all it was cut out.Well anyway we waited around and finally they brought in a bulldozer bucket loader to get the shark off the beach but before they did they documented the length it was close to 17 feet long..Still didn't know what kind of shark it was they removed it and put it on the truck.. Well anyway as I got a little older I would look at the photo albums and I finally realize what kind of shock it was actually after I understood what species sharks were in it became more popular well it was a white shark 100%..And it was a female Females are always bigger when it comes to white sharks they give birth to live young.. So what must've happened is fisherman caught the shark Killed it and removed its jaws.. Which is really sad to think about

I was in Florida once and I was walking along a pier and someone who was fishing had caught a baby blacktip reef shark and was showing it off before throwing it back in the water (alive of course). I got to touch it. The shark felt a lot rougher than it looked.

I love the intimacy when you guys are scared .JAWS was childhood my ocean horror After years of research I respect them just like wolves and bears.! As a child, I had a nightmare of my bed was being in the middle of the ocean surrounded by sharks.

JAWS was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies or tv shows were these dolphin sized fish. And it surprised a lot of people to find out that at 25 feet long (7.62 meters) the great white in Jaws was bigger than the record but not by much.
