It's crazy that the company had written code with rules about bringing the alien back no matter who died..
@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse Жыл бұрын
@@barowt They didn't. That was a communique that Mother had received from "The Company", and Ash was a "company robot". He was programmed to always follow company orders, which is exactly what he did. I suspect, the company had received the "distress call" (i.e. warning) from the alien ship and made a judgement call "in the moment", and then sent the communique to the ship so they would pick it up and bring it back. Now, that part intrigues me because it suggests that someone had already been there .... a scout or something ... who had determined that the aliens might have some useful, military purpose, and a decision was made THEN (by the company) to retrieve at least 1 specimen, AFTER that report was received.
@Paul_1971

@@StevesFunhouse Seems to me they might've known in advance, as Ash was put in at short notice to replace the usual science officer that Dallas had shipped out with before.
@StevesFunhouse

@@Paul_1971 That is true, and there is some intelligence in that, especially since they made a point to mention that in the movie. And, following that (and my original) logic, it could be that they did it either, because they already knew or at least suspected that they'd find something, or even JUST IN CASE they found something. In reality, we really don't know why they replaced the science officer. He could have been sick or transferred for other reasons like, he didn't like the run, he wanted more time closer to home/family, they needed him for more important jobs, or even for a poor job performance. This still aligns with my thinking though. It'd be hard to talk miners into going there directly, knowing that it was to retrieve an alien, so they'd need a plan to get them there. Using a mining expedition as a cover would be perfect because, they'd be in hibernation mode and unaware of what was happening until it was too late. Using Ash to ensure that at least 1 of them came back infected was feasible and makes a lot of sense. Sending the military would definitely be out of the question because there would be too much of a risk that they'd kill the alien if they felt threatened by it. They would want people who basically were unarmed, unaware and defenseless. However, it still works even if they only put Ash there IN CASE it ever was a possibility. Remember, he DID receive orders "mid-mission", which Ripley confirmed, so it still appears to me that this was either a "spur-of-the-moment" thing, or they didn't want to reveal his orders until they needed to. Who knows, maybe they started shipping "loyal synthetics" on ALL of their freighters, for just such scenarios. Finally, it's possible that they also had run into trouble before with crews refusing to follow orders and decided that some "insurance" needed to be added to make sure missions went according to THEIR plans. Lots of possibilities, so thanx a lot Paul 😉😉... now my mind is swarming with potential scenarios👍😊.

When Alien came out in 1979 it was very shocking to the viewers. The bigger name actors died in the first 30 minutes of the movie, nobody knew who Ripley/Sigourney Weaver was. You thought everyone could get killed off in this movie. "In Space No One Can Hear You Scream" -- That is what they put on the billboards and marketing ads.

As someone who works in healthcare, I'm absolutely Team Ripley. The safety protocols are in place for a reason. They had no idea what that thing was or what it could do. Allowing it on the ship was unbearably foolish. You can't just save someone because they're a friend. The entire crew was endangered and ultimately lost, because they ignored the safety protocols.
@tjsogmc
@tjsogmc Жыл бұрын
You have forgotten that Ash was sent by the company with orders to return the organism at all costs. Following protocols wouldn't have worked when the company considered the crew expendable.
@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse Жыл бұрын
@@tjsogmc No one was SENT to retrieve the alien. They got a communique WHILE in transit back to Earth, and at that time, Ash who was "programmed" by the company to follow orders religiously, was updated and instructed to make sure a specimen was returned to Earth by any means necessary. There was NOTHING in this movie that suggests that the company had planned this all along. I firmly "believe" that they received the "distress signal" and made the decision at that point to send the Nostromo to that location and have THEM "have a looksee" and "get a sample", at all costs.
@tjsogmc
@tjsogmc Жыл бұрын
@@StevesFunhouse so you agre that there was no possibility of following protocols because the company desired to retrieve the alien at all costs? Remember, Ash was a last minute replacement for the science officer. Whether it was planned or a last minute change, the alien was going to be on the ship regardless of any protocols.
@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse Жыл бұрын
@@tjsogmc Yes, I definitely agree with you on that, and as Ash proved when RIpley told them she would not let them break quarantine by overriding the door lock and let them back onto the ship. I'm kind of suspecting that he got his orders either before they set down on the planet or after he confirmed the distress beacon (i.e. "warning") was coming from another alien ship.

You had an interesting, though misguided, impression of Ripley at the beginning. She wasn't being a "bitch" by refusing to let the team through the airlock, rather she was following the established quarantine protocols. If anything, Ash was being insubordinate by breaking the protocol and disobeying Ripley's order. At that moment she was in command of the ship and had the rightful authority to enforce the quarantine protocol. I'm sure by the end you will see that the entire incident could have been avoided if everyone had followed the protocols and chain of command.
@h.4315

That is a fairly unusual perspective. Most viewers would've sided with Ripley for not letting Kane through because of quarantine protocol, plus the fact that you know that in a film genre like this, letting it in is the cause of the entire crisis of the film.

As you said, "She wasn't being a 'b*itch' by refusing to let the team through the airlock, rather she was following the established quarantine protocols" ... I really love these two, but that's what happens when people talk through important moments of a movie ... they miss important details, and that can change the entire "perceived story" that a person gets. Of course (and I'm NOT referring to you when I say this), that's also why it's wrong for people to even give their opinions of sequels and similar movies ... because they can alter/effect the reactors experience, and you never know what a reactor will watch down the road. Thank you for your explanation. It was spot on !!!

I think the Alien was so iconic because it was so horrifying and different from the earlier films -- when Star Wars came out, there were mostly cute or strange aliens, and in the Star Trek series a lot of humanoid aliens like Klingons that human interacted with. The Alien (xenomorph) was designed by Swiss artist H.R.Giger, who based it on a "biomechanical" idea. If you had never seen it, and it was never fully shown, you had NO idea what it was ... except the scary monster in the dark!
@dustinherk8124
@dustinherk8124 Жыл бұрын
your star trek comparison isnt exacly accurate, cus this zenomorph is humaniod. its bipedal, one head, 2 arms, with many similar functional body parts that we have, (except the tail and second jaw). most xenomorphs tend to adopt physical characteristics of their host. hence why the "runner" existed in Alien 3, because its host was a dog.

My thoughts about Ripley and quarantine is as 3rd in command with Dallas and Kane off the ship, her first priority is to the ship and it's crew so keeping quarantine is what she would do. After watching Alien and Aliens I do believe her character is such that if it was a decision to help someone at risk to only herself and she was not overseeing a crew, she would take the risk and help another person. I love your thought provoking questions.

I noticed you were watching the so-called Director's Cut. It was later found out that Ridley Scott likes the original theatrical cut better (and so do I). He only added the extra cut scenes, so he could get the studio to finance a full restoration of the film negatives. The added scene where Ripley finds where the alien took the crew's bodies screws up the alien life cycle as shown in the classic sequel, "Aliens." Ignore that scene when you watch the next film.

A couple of things: Many claim the sequel (Aliens) to be better, but they are VERY different movies, with this being more of an art house, slow burn, fear of the unknown, isolationist horror type film and the sequel being much more of a thrill-a-minute, action, military popcorn sci-fi horror. I find them equally entertaining for different reasons, but both should be watched. Secondly, the actors in the chest-burster scene knew very well what was going to happen. From a technical perspective, there is NO WAY they couldn’t have known, with all the practical apparatuses necessary to achieve the scene. What they DIDN’T know was just how much fake gore was going to be thrown into the room for the scene, which was indeed shocking to the actors, particularly Veronica Cartwright. Her reaction, while genuine, was not a result of being unaware of the chest-burster portion of the scene, merely just not knowing how icky it was going to be. The pause in the middle of the scene is real, because it was so violent and gory that the actors were caught by surprise by the sheer visceral nature of the effect, even knowing it was coming, but Ridley Scott just shouted at them to keep going with it.

My son watched this when he was 12. He loved it. I've since watched Jaws, Aliens, The Shining, Predator and a tonne of other great movies I saw when I was his age. He loves them all. Kids these days don't even blink during the scares that once got us.

Oops, you have the incorrect year in your title. This movie came out May 25, 1979, not 1975. It came out two years after Star Wars: Episode 4: A New Hope, not two years prior.

Just subbed. 👍 You need to see Blade Runner from 1982, also directed by Ridley Scott, one of the greatest movie directors ever IMO. If you want to see a more unknown film by him, you should check out The Duelists (1977). It has a very different setting to the other ones, as it's set in the Napoleonic era (around 1800), and is about a personal vendetta between two French officers which goes completely out of control. Cheers from Sweden!

How could you think Lambert ran away? She was killed by the Alien right after it killed Parker. You heard her screams.

You mentioned a "Touch-Me-Not Plant" and I was wondering if it is the same as what in America we call the Venus flytrap?
@Griexxt
@Griexxt Жыл бұрын
No, I think it's a different one. It's a plant that folds its small leaves together when you touch it, as a defense mechanism, not to catch anything. It also folds them when it gets dark. It has a very intricate and beautiful flower though.

@@Griexxt Ah, yes! I know that plant. A gentle stroke of the leaves causes them to fold up like butterfly wings. 😀

Two young Hipsters are boarding the "Nostromo," What will they make of this "old, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? What would YOU make of a movie with the tagline: "In space no one can hear you scream?" 4:23 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do Science" on King Kong island. 5:32 Sharp-eyed viewers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 7:13 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 8:15 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 8:51 How's THAT for a jump scare? 9:06 This conversation has gotten more weight due to "recent events." 9:38 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for decades. 9:53 You are watching the Special Edition with video not seen in 1979. 10:25 Acid Blood solved a script problem. 12:38 A Props department work of ART, made of sea animals. DFX can't match this level of reality. 13:32 Kane's last meal. 14:03 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences since 1979. 14:27 Burial at sea, an old maritime tradition to spare the next-of-kin grisly details. 15:18 Along came Jones. 17:01 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 20:12 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 21:02 Most viewers didn't see this coming. 22:55 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 23:57 Another scene not seen in 1979. 24:33 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 27:21 Tonight's entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 27:54 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph.

There weren’t many cut scenes for this film, but the one where Dallas is found slowly transforming into a facehugger egg is part of the original drawings, and airbrush painting sequences worked out by H. R. Giger, and Ridley Scott for the Alien life cycle. Scott thought the build of tension in the film was broken by the inclusion of the Dallas/egg scene, and so he cut it for the theatrical release. When Cameron, and Stan Winston Studios started the pre-visualizations, and writing for the second film they changed the life cycle of the alien, and added the queen as the egg source rather than victim transformation. There are are a few books out there devoted to Giger’s concept art designs for Alien, and Dune that were then recycled as visual elements/homage in Prometheus. You could probably find much of this concept art online if you’re interested in tracking it down. 💫🔥🌌☮️
