We didn't have PG13 in the 70's. We didn't have PG13 until after Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom and Gremlins came out. Those 2 movies were the reason they created the PG13 rating. The first PG13 movie was Red Dawn in 1984 starring Patrick Swayze. Jaws was the first Summer Blockbuster. It was also responsible fir a large part of my generation not going in the ocean. I still won't and I was 14 when this came out. The barrels are supposed to keep the shark from submerging very deep so it's closer to the surface for tracking. Also the story Quint told about the USS Indianapolis is a true story.

What a lot of people forget was that PG wasn't meant to be a family friendly rating back then.Yes,all ages could go,but with the suggestion that parents should decide if their kids could handle it.Even so,with Jaws,the producers put the extra warning "May be too intense for younger children" on all posters and TV ads.

One of the reasons we don't see much of the shark was that they had like a zillions things that went wrong with the shark prop... (basically, it kept breaking down)... In the end, it turned to their advantage as the viewers imagination is much more powerful than any special effect. Just seeing that floating dock, or those yellow barrels was enough. John Williams' genius score also helped greatly...

That's what I was thinking (about the mechanical failures). Totally agree on suspense of the unseen!
@lyndoncmp5751

Actually the unseen shark was planned for the first half of the film. The mechanic shark was never scheduled to be used until the Orca based scenes. That's where it kept breaking down. The shark not being seen in the first half was by design.

The shark slamming into Hooper's cage made me jump in the theater, too, although for a different reason. I had read Peter Benchley's novel, so I knew the shark was going to attack and had steeled myself for that scene. But when the shark rammed the cage, a lady in the seat next to mine screamed and leapt ino her boyfriend's lap. She scared me more than the shark.

When this movie came out in 1975, our family was at the beach in Delaware, and we went to see JAWS at the theater, and then back to the beach the next day. I went in the water... and got stung by a jellyfish. Not as traumatic as a shark attack, but it still hurt. I believe this was Steven Spielberg's third film, after "Sugarland Express" and "Duel", which was one of the best made-for-TV movies you will ever see. That's a recommendation for "Duel". "Jaws" was the film that got his career kicked into high gear.

This is my favorite movie all time. Everything is spot on perfect. I saw it 5 times during the Summer of ‘75, and it scared the hell out of every audience that saw it. It got not one, but TWO standing ovations at the end of the movie. It rocketed to the #1 spot as the all-time movie money-maker in just 60 days (unadjusted for inflation). Adjusted for inflation, it remains the #7 all-time movie blockbuster - and that’s WITHOUT the benefit of numerous re-releases that all of the other movies on that inflation-adjusted Top Ten List have. It was an atmospheric experience with a full house, alternating horror and some pretty funny laughs. You felt like you were on an adventurous journey of discovery with the 3 main characters in the boat, one of awe, and gruesome horror. John Williams’ unforgettable music score gave the shark a persona of gigantic, unstoppable, oncoming death. And it all worked so well because the script played out lik e real life. What a movie this was when it was released - a true phenomenon. The summer of ‘75 is so special to me: I was 15 and I saw “Jaws” AND I read “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Wow - it’ll always remain my favorite summer!

Fun fact: You were supposed to see more of the shark but the animatronic almost was always not working, and they couldn't afford to make another one or fix it constantly (I believe they already went over budget). They used the theme to cause suspense and used the shark as sparingly as they could. It was very well received and thought to be even better than if the shark was shown more.

Fun facts: Decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich." She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since they filmed their scene. Schieder's grandkids called him "Chief" or "Grandpa Big Fish," which is adorable! The line is you're going to need a bigger boat not we're. And Peter benchley as well as one of the writers of the script, the gentleman who played the news reporter meadows, actually stated in an interview in 2005 that Roy scheider said that that line was in fact in the script and was not ad-libbed and he definitely had lived a lot he said but that was not one of the lines that Roy came up with. I talked my dad into watching this in the theater and we loved this movie. It was one of the only movies we saw together. Also “we need a bigger boat” was a total ad lib by Roy. It was kept in the movie because it really exemplified his characters paranoia of the sea. As stated in the comments, the shark gave them a lot of hell in production so it’s not seen very often which turned out to be a bonus for the movie. Also, Spielberg named the shark Bruce after a lawyer that he knew. 😂 This was my introduction to Spielberg and man what a ride throughout the years! Hope you continue to watch Spielberg movies. First summer blockbuster. The first scene was really scary. You didn’t see the shark or any blood but you knew what was happening to her. There were men on either side of her pulling ropes tied around her and she broke a rib. Screams were for real. The USS Indianapolis was real. The barrels are full of air. If they can tire it out they’re hoping to drown it. Sharks have to move to stay alive. I didn’t swim in the ocean for years after this. I can swim in the ocean now but I don’t go beyond the waves. The thing with the barrels has to do with a sharks ability to breath. Unlike some fish, sharks have to keep swimming in order to keep oxygen moving across its gills. By attaching a barrel (or two or three) to it, you make the shark have to work harder to keep swimming. Eventually, it because too exhausted to swim, stops, and drowns.

If I remember right, you're actually better off swinging for the eyes of a shark over the nose. Since, not only does hitting the nose not really faze them, but there's an alarmingly high chance your hand would just slide down toward the teeth when you hit the nose. Even that might not do much though, since, it's a shark. If it's attacking you, it's because it attacks animals your size...animals that could *also* kick the shit out of a human and are much better suited to the water. But yes, you're right, sharks can't swim backwards--or at least not anything we'd describe as "swimming." Basically they can manage just enough to let them wiggle their way out if they get their head stuck someplace and not much else.

This was the first of 3 horror films that I watched during that time period and lead to my addiction to them to this day. The second was The Exorcist, freaked me out more than Jaws. LOL The third freaked me out so bad I didn't try to sleep all night. My mom and sister got a big kick out of that fact the next morning. My mother was 6 months pregnant with me when this came out so I didn't see Jaws until years later. Then Jaws 3 came out in 3-D in 1987. I was 7! We never made it through the opening credits. I started screaming when the grouper head's mouth kept opening and closing without the body. We had to leave the theater. Now on to Jaws facts: 1. The Indianapolis story is true although a few of the facts are wrong, like the date mentioned. It has only been declassified a few years before the movie so it wasn't common knowledge. This movie brought it to the publics attention. 2. The book explained why the mayor wanted to keep things open... The town owed money to the Mob. 3. Cooper died in the book but they had such a cool video of the shark on top of the cage but with a person in it so they let him live. 4. Lee Fierro who played Mrs. Kintner actually slapped Roy Scheider on several takes. For years people would come up to her asking her to slap them too. 5. Several decades after the filming of Jaws, Lee Fierro walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother to the waitress. suddenly the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot. 6 Peter Benchley, who wrote the book, later regretted it because of all the sharks killed following the film. In his later year he worked with shark conservationist to stop the slaughter. He was also one of the founding board members of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. 7. The word "coroner" is misspelled not once, but twice in the form Chief Brody is filling out for the shark's first victim. This is my personal favorite besides the fact that "You're going to need a bigger boat." was an ablib. Also Robert Shaw was drunk on set quite a bit which caused problems with Richard Dreyfuss. If you get a chance watch the making of Jaws it's quite fascinating to see.

Richard Dreyfuss's break out role was in American Graffiti (1973) it also was a break out role for Harrison Ford and for director George Lucas. 1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. It works every time😲 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. All of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea. 10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 11. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 12. The boy that says, "He made me do it." recently became the police chief of the town where this was filmed. 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son. 15. The third one was so bad that after Scheider read the script he turned it. PS: Sharks cannot swim backwards, and they can't stop swimming forward or the water won't flow through their gills. When I was in the Navy I was stationed on Oahu for 3 1/2 years and it was 3 years 5 months too long. Sorry guys

Chrissie (Susan Backlinie) screams were real. Spielberg told the divers underwater to not tell her when they were going to pull her under and toss her around. Robert Shaw (Quint) was a brilliant actor but he was quite the drinker. He messed up the Indianapolis speech so bad because he was drunk. He went back the next day and did that entire speech in one take. They had a lot of problems with Bruce, the mechanical shark, so they had to wind up not showing him so much which made the movie all that much better! The largest shark filmed is Deep Blue. She is about 20 feet long and estimated to be about 50 yrs old. The PG-13 didn't come out until July, 1984.

Robert Shaw was an actor and playwright in real life. He was also a heavy drinker and was inebriated most of the time when he’s on screen. His drunken rants are legendary but sadly he was taken too soon and died around the age of 50. He left behind a wonderful legacy of films though. His “Indianapolis” speech in this film ranks as probably the best speech ever in a movie. That they didn’t give academy awards for best picture and director to JAWS is one of the worst gaffs ever by Hollywood. There has not been a better film made that year up to and including today. JAWS wasn't Spielberg's first movie, but was the first Summer blockbuster & benefited much from its animatronic shark not working so Spielberg had to get creative with ways to stimulate the viewer's imagination. Also, Dreyfuss was already a star but thought his last movie had been so bad he ought to take anything that came along, including a shark movie. He & Shaw (Quint) loathed each other.
