As someone who grew up in Indiana and a Hoosier fan, it was amazing how Coach permeated sports and popular culture. His ethics about what it meant to be a leader and a team were complicated and divided opinion. My uncle played college basketball in the state and didn't care for Knight and neither did I after some of his behavior in the late 90s, but everyone respected his basketball brilliance. His approach is old school. It would be interesting to dive into more of what that mentality means. I loved watching the Hoosier teams of the early 90s.

While I'm a die hard unc basketball fan I still have respect for coach Bob knight who was a good coach while he had controversy in his career his career wins 902 wins 6th all time Somehow amid his controversy he was a basketball coach who worked hard for army and Indiana and Texas tech he was a legend

Do people know the story of how Knight and his former captain at Army, Coach K, fell out? After K had been coach at Duke for several years and gone to multiple Final 4's, his team was playing in the upcoming national semis against Indiana (1992). A reporter at a press conference asked K a question like did he wish he could call Knight for advice on strategy for the upcoming game? K said that he had been coaching for a good while and was capable of coming up with his own game plan. Knight took that as a personal insult, and after Duke won the game he gave K a perfunctory handshake and brushed past him. K was devastated. He tried to repair the relationship many times, including asking Knight to introduce him when he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. But Knight still couldn't get over it. Years later there was a reunion of an Army team and Knight wouldn't even acknowledge him. Coach K told his family that's it, I'm finally done with him.

Knight told Dan Patrick several years ago that he hoped everybody in the Indiana administration that fired him was dead, so I'm not going to pretend Knight was a good person because he just died. @@rs8247

Everyone needs to STFU about, “how will his controversies be portrayed when it comes to how he will be remembered?” I’ve heard that line or something like it, 500 times today. 2 words for you. WHO CARES. Get over it. Every single one of us have done things in life we aren’t proud of. Don’t FOR A SECOND think that you’re better than someone just bc your “dirty little secrets” haven’t been brought to light. Remember the man for what he was. He was greatness. Period.

No, dummy, That's not how it works.. His "greatness" ended 36 years ago. He just ended up a petty, whiny tyrant throughout the rest of his career. And his "dirty little secrets" aren't little. Choking his own players. Neil Reed died at 36 of a heart attack. Bobby Knight drove him right out of basketball. Shunning mentees because they passed his accomplishments. Coach K comes to mind. Petty little temper tantrums... that's his life story too. So if you're so fragile that any criticism of Knight makes you wanna lash out, have at it. But the rest of us will live in reality. He was a great coach. And he was an overly sensitive, out of control bastard. In other words, he's someone you'd never tolerate. Unless you're okay with a grown man choking you. If so, please seek help.

Other than Hoosier fans and I get it, if it’s your guy you view the world through rose colored glasses, everyone else living in the real world will remember Coach for his lack of self control and bullying everyone with whom he disagreed. When you have a temper you can’t or won’t control it negates all the good things you might do for others or achieve. Same for Woody Hayes. Did SO much in the area if philanthropy that will never be known or remembered. Just a coach that was always in trouble for blowing his top.

My boyfreind was recruited by Coah Knight in the 70's and though he went to FSU he always loved Kingight as a teacher, coach, and a man for all seasons and sometimes without reSON BUT THOUGH HE IS not for everyone as a woman i think he was great for young men.

I've always known about the undefeated season, but the Showtime documentary really showed how difficult it was to achieve it, even in 1976. Kentucky made it to the Final Four undefeated a few years ago and Gonzaga was in the title game with an undefeated record, but Indiana did it in the Big Ten, not a weak conference. Still, my memories of Bobby Knight are mostly from all the coverage that surrounded him when he got fired by Indiana, so I always think of the choking video whenever his name comes up. There was also the ESPN film, A Season on the Brink, which reinforced that image of him.

He had quite a few student athletes to go on to have very successful nba careers, even more found success in life. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, all under the tutelage of knight maximized their potential. There was a passing of the torch from John wooden and knights era the year before the perfect season, so people in indiana are very proud of their basketball history. With pride we tend to overlook our shortcomings, but all in all he deserves recognition and I'm glad that recognition is seeping through at this moment

Is there any long time coach who hasn't had a lot of former players who went on to have success outside of the sport they played? Would all those former Indiana players have been failures in life if they had played for somebody else? Here's the difference between Bear Bryant and Knight. Bryant was lionized for his "Junction Boys" team that won a Southwest Conference championship after a brutal training camp where dozens of players snuck out in the middle of the night and quit the team. Many years later, the Junction Boys team had a reunion and Bryant was apprehensive about how some of the players would react to him. He said his methods had been over the top and if he had been a player he would have quit. He was capable of growing and learning and recognizing his mistakes. Knight was never wrong about anything, ever.@@jordanalexander5275

@Don-md6wn another difference, when bear Bryant started out he wouldn't recruit African Americans. Bob knight, who coached in a state that's famous for the birth of the Klan, never had a problem recruiting African American players. I don't know why we are comparing bear Bryant and knight, but while we're at it...

@Don-md6wn there are coach's that served for long terms that did not care one ioda about academics. That's an easy list to compile. And if we are talking about finding success outside of the sports world, bob knight starts to separate from the pack. Look at John Calipari's students that didn't go pro, many doctors or lawyers in that bunch?

I have to say, I was thoroughly disgusted at the behavior of the Around the Horn cast of reporters today...they were literally salivating to take shots at Knight's legacy...all of them sounding like tiny children complaining that the bad old man was mean to them. The guys not even cold yet, and they're ripping into him, now that he's no longer a threat...even Tony had to do a kind of mea culpa for the panel at the end...in direct opposition, Mike and Tony later handled the whole thing with the utmost class and honesty on PTI...

Isaiah should have zero say in the legacy of Bobby Knight. He was an NBA player and superstar. He got no hard coaching. Jay is being diplomatic and weak as typical. Bobby Knight was a narcissist and he choked and abused college athletes. He should be remembered for that as well

Knight, years ago on the Dan Patrick show about Myles Brand and the rest of the administration at Indiana that fired him: “I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for those people. I have no interest in ever going back to that university. “I hope they're all dead.” Another Knight quote: "I want them to bury me face down, and my critics can kiss my ass." Good riddance.

Tough guy. Great coach no doubt. However, he lost Larry Legend and never realized this guy is so good it’s scary. IU won in 1976. Imagine 77, 78 and 79 with Larry Legend. He never reached out to him… just a shy poor kid. A bit arrogant I believe. Just making a point as many do not want to remember this.

People remember that. But Bird said himself, "I was out of my cocoon," that is, it was a culture shock going to IU, a poor kid living in a dorm with players that had nice clothes. And in retrospect, perhaps no amount of reaching out on Knight's part could have made Bird stay. When Larry entered the NBA in the fall of 1979, honestly, who thought he was going to be any good, let alone great?

Really tried to pass his ABUSIVE coaching ways. Literally had a 30 for 30 on this bully of a coach. Knight is the example you can get a way with anything long as you win. You should have FUN playing basketball as a STUDENT-ATHLETE. Not literally FEAR your coach, for your LIFE making basketball decisions you’re supposed to enjoy.

Jay as a Tarheel fan, I have a lot of respect for you as an analyst, even if you are a dOokiE. But you do yourself a disservice, trying to push this narrative that Knight is worthy of all this faux praise. Particularly when he knows that Knight's petty behavior and vindictiveness caused the rupture of his relationship with Coach K, who had been his team captain at Army. Bilas was careful to say "the Bobby Knight I knew", as if to acknowledge that he was an asshole but he was nice to me because I kissed his behind. I expect better than this from Bilas.

Huh? What did Bilas say, exactly? He didn't excuse Knight's behavior, but said, ' *in TOTALITY, the good outweighed the bad* .' And if you read all the comments on this and every other youtube upload, you'd think the man was a total negative. Bob Knight helped out former players with medical issues; he taught classes at IU (unpaid); he did many works of charity; he brought a kid with AIDS to an IU game in the mid '80's and sat him behind the Indiana bench at a time when that disease was unknown. Of course, these things and other positives are *NEVER* mentioned....

So funny everyone else seems to begin their gushing comments over their beloved coach with, “Well we all know Coach was a bit complicated or controversial, BUT…” Then the second part of their comment is thinking of everything they can to justify his lack of self control and down right meanness they defined in the first part.
