They missed the best part..before the Olympics took place the US Olympic team went up against NBA All-Star team that included Magic Bird and Isah... and the Olympic team (all college kids including Jordan) WON ALL 8 GAMES by a significant margin including an embarrassing 128-106... Bobby Knight said those words before Jordan made even a single dribble in the NBA... and the fact that Jordan was that good before his NBA career shows why he was able to dominate the NBA for his whole career and become the undisputed GOAT of all sports

As they would say, he got ìt from his mother. Deloris Jordan was a college educated woman in the segregated South. Bank manager.. Her baby boy who chose the best for him. Michael wanted to sign with Adidas and he was rejected. Phil Knight came in and offered 5% ownership which he still gets today. Her HSBC education paid off. So proud of Mrs Jordan. Mŕ.Jordan was a laborer. MJ came from a 2 parent working income. Plus a lot of love. Church on Sunday. Very proud. ❤

I was fortunate to know Coach and play some golf with him. Part of our golf led to conversations about the '84 Olympic Team. When I asked him why Charles Barkley didn't make the team he said it was simple. We asked him to lose 9 pounds and he gained 11. As for John Stockton, he said he simply couldn't put the ball in the basket. His shooting wasn't good enough at that point in his career. But the best comment was when I asked him who was the best basketball player he ever coached he looked at me with a grin and stated Michael Jordan and it wasn't even close!

How could you hate a guy that does his job perfectly -- forget the fame and media -- just the overall ability, work-ethic, discipline, attention to detail, efficiency, and overall ability to be coached as Michael Jordan being praised by Bobby Knight, a basketball genius, it shows this man Jordan really understood what he was doing and how to constantly improve while helping and enabling his team to win...not just him but all of his teammates on that 1984 Olympic Team winning gold -- wonderful.

The thing with this story isn't even about MJ's basketball skills... it's about how fast his brain worked. How many guys would come up with comebacks as quick as he did ALL the time. He was still a child here and his brain was 1000 steps ahead coming up with that response to Bobby Knight. Look at his Tex Winter line about no I in team... or when Jerry Reinsdorf brought up the 10 pills for a headache with one being laced with cyanide. MJ was just wired differently.

I remember on the book The Jordan Rules, there was a story about Gary Payton. Payton told MJ now that he’s in the league he can get everything MJ has. MJ turned to him and said, “ The difference between me and you is that I get all my stuff for free”. Even though MJ got the best of him, he was reportedly pissed that a rookie stepped to him like that. The next game he harassed Payton so much, his coach benched him after the first half.

Charles Barkley was one of the greatest basketball players ever and someone who I really admire. He should have been on the 84 team. Bobby Knight was a crazy hardass, but he knew basketball inside and out. Jordan impressed these two guys during the 1984 Olympics to an insane degree. Knight said MJ was the best player he'd ever seen before he had ever played in an NBA game. Charles, of course, recognized that he'd have to compete with MJ and could tell immediately that that task would not be easy. The 1993 finals were awesome, with both MJ and Barkley playing phenomenal basketball.

Coach Knight had a task to do- make sure the USA wins the gold. So what if Barkley was more talented than 1/2 the guys on the squad? To play for any great coach, one has to pull their heads from their but and actually listen to sound reason. Barkley didn't want to hear anything Knight was saying, so he rightfully was cut. The decision reflects poorly on Barkley- not Coach Knight, and it really should be no surprise that a hard head like Barkley never won a single ring in all his years in the league, in spite of the great support he had surrounding him. Being a great baller is more than just being big and looking hard after a dunk, lol.

Pippin saying anything negative about MJ's game came only after Scottie was butthurt after "The last dance" aired. he never forgave MJ for continuing to win, even while Scottie would take take his pouting timeouts. MJ completely thwarted his plan to receive a higher paid contract. But in his defense, I believe Scottie had both crack and alcohol issues before he entered the NBA, then they only got worse after he retired. Prayers for him and his loved ones.

How do you live with that? MJ hears what we hear. The praise has been through the roof, and deservingly so. I think he has handled it as well as he could. He still has a certain humbleness /respectfulness about him. Those years he played from college through the NBA just seemed to shoot by. I’m glad I got to live it, see him play in person in college and the NBA. I even met him one time. Of course I’m partial, having live in NC all my life…

@@Bob-Sacamano314 Slow down Sling Blade IQ. They saw him ball at North Carolina when he hit game winner as a Freshman in chip game vs Ewing's Hoyas. James Worthy, who was a Junior said that he was the best player on the team for about three weeks until that freakish Freshman to the throne. Bird, Magic, Drexler, McHale and a whole lot of future hall-of-famers saw Black Jesus when they played exhibition games against MJ's amateur squad to get them ready for 84 Olympics. A bust with no jumper is reason he dropped to #3? You're as delusional as Manson's whole family on acid trips. Back in 80s it was a big man's league. Hence why The Dream went numero uno. And since Bowie was not only a wildcat from Kentucky but a 7 footer and Drexler, who's a shooting-guard like Mike, was already blazin' trails in Portland, MJ was drafted third. Please know you're b-ball history or you're always going to sound as dumb as Bron when he said Morey "wasn't educated on the situation at hand."

He has no one to blame other than himself. In 1993 he wasn't going to beat MJ and Chicago, but losing to Houston in 1994 and 1995 were big choke jobs by Barkley and Phoenix. Phoenix was up 2-0 in 1994, proceed to lose games 3 and 4 in Phoenix, and eventually the series in 7 games. In 1995, Phoenix was up 3-1 and again lost in 7 games, including game 7 at home. The irony is that if Phoenix had made the Finals in 1994 or 1995, Chuck would have avoided MJ altogether because Jordan was retired in 1994, and wasn't quite back to full form after his return in March of 1995.

@RepentOrPerishL133 5 ай бұрын
Just because you're college player of the year doesn't mean other great players agree with the vote. They still think they are the best and the voters are wrong. It's a vote. There have been College players of the year who didn't do squat in the NBA. They never played against each other and nor met until that tryout. The didn't have AAU and traveling teams where everybody meet in camps an play and become buddies. Someone might invite you to a camp here or there but it wasn't like now. Barkley got educated on who was the best when they actually met. Same with Bird. Magic heard about him seen him on TV. It was different when he played with him one time at a camp.

@@RepentOrPerishL133 I never said anything about "agreeing with the vote." when Charles claimed to have said, "his name is Michael Jordan..." the implication is that he had never heard of Mike before, and that he believed the person to whom he was speaking had never heard of him before, which is nonsense. Anyone associated in any way with college basketball would have known who the college player of the year was. He would have been the dude on the cover of SI and ALL of college basketball magazines.
