My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.
Links are affiliate links where they can be - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

KZfaq is still viable and no other mode of communication has created such an effect. When I was in Paris last month I couldn't believe the number of people looking at their phones and swiping. Their attention span collapses. That introversion is dangerous. The fault of TikTOK. I find myself watching your videos all the way through. Since I can't live in Paris, your content is a lifeline. Keep going! Cooper agrees.

There’s definitely no substitute for experience and letting something grow organically. A presenter on the radio was making exactly the same point this week about riding the algorithm just to increase your follower numbers. I think the same argument applies to any field of work - there are no sustainable quick wins.

Very relevant conversation. As a viewer(not a creator), KZfaq is my favorite format to watch. It’s what you mentioned…with shorter content I don’t really get to know the creator or interact with them. Plus to me there’s nothing more relaxing than watching someone I enjoy on KZfaq. I should’ve started content creation in 2010. Maybe I’d be a pioneer in some way. Then again, there are so many examples of people achieving stuff at all ages. The only drawback is that we are made to feel like monetising our hobbies is the only way forward.

Caught Marques' video yesterday and it made me think about you and your youtube journey. I thought it odd when I began seeing these videos pop up but sometimes it takes a cut off date like the beginning of a year to make it real.
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 5 ай бұрын
I know some of them had it planned out publicly in advance, others hit their limit, but yeah I think that the new year makes for a good marker to quit. Also seeing others do it probably gives a sense of permission - sometimes it can feel isolating to be in this on your own and what other KZfaqrs do (like retire) can help it feel ok for you to do the same. I wish them all the best!

Having a KZfaq channel is effectively like running your own business. Which is no surprise to anyone who tried running a business based on their passion in life. You do have to do everything yourself and then if you scale and hire people you become a full time manager. That’s how things always worked even before computers were invented.

But it has enabled youtubers to makes some great videos about others quitting youtube :D This one is great and I like MKHD as well. His point about basketball players doing things for free for a long time for a CHANCE to be paid is a good point I thought.
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 5 ай бұрын
Haha, for sure. And it's a great analogy, I agree. What gets lost in it is if you suddenly got good enough at basketball to go pro, but to do so you had to scout out your own team, and then coach them, while also selling the tickets (to an arena you need to book) etc. etc. The infrastructure isn't there for the creator in the same way, which is the side that doesn't scale the same. But I really liked his video the most of what I've seen.

I work a 9to5 job and really they try to focus on metrics, it is how the judge and decide if you are doing a good job or not( the blame game) I often wonder if this type of judgement says more about the person judging. The KZfaq, ie. yours is more showing how growth is possible showing the process the success and pitfalls. I can use this type of thinking in my world too. Thanks

It would be fascinating to hear you talk about another topic you've barely broached in the past: the topic of your relationship to religion and spirituality. I think I've heard you mention your family was quite devout, your dad was a minister at some point or something? Wasn't the ship in Africa also a religious endeavor? As you know here in France we're not very religious and it would be great to hear you explain this very American thing and how it has affected you personally and your upbringing

If you want a long, rewarding career you need to follow your heart because it’s the only thing you can really trust in life to steer you true and steady on the path of happiness. It does often come with financial or lifestyle sacrifices… but as someone living in a 140 sq ft apartment, I expect you already understand that. 😄

I've been considering leaving. The ads are close to unbearable anymore and somehow I have been flagged and I was not allowed to make a comment that people stealing others things should be a criminal offense and they should be prosecuted. It's going too far. They would not let me post it. I got a batch return and the the comment space was grayed out. So, I'm getting tired of it. There is a lot of great content on here, great people posting, lots of information, but Google is getting way heavy handed. I like a lot about them but find them intrusive, always trying to get into my business and if nothing else, I think I need a break. It's people like you and a few others that keep me here, and things like how I can clean the grinder on my espresso machine. I realize my kind of quitting is not the quitting you are addressing here, but I also wonder if anyone else feels the same as I do about this platform lately.
