Note that this is also her own arrangement (at the beginning of the video you'll see her give the director more notes). Your word for Angelina was "unprecedented," which is completely accurate: at 9 years of age, she understood jazz in a way that few musicians ever will (and NO ONE under the age of 20 ever has). Ignore her age and simply enjoy her as the top tier professional jazz musician that she is. As a fellow musician (sax & clarinet), I too wish I had a fraction of this child's talent!

So many reactors say that Angelina can’t know what these early songs are about. No, that’s not true. You don’t have to live the emotions to perform. Angelina is a truly special person-not one in a million, but once in a lifetime. You’ll see as you watch other music that she arranges and performs that she is way beyond her years musically, emotionally, and intellectually. Even younger than in this song, Angelina is articulate, smart, and aware. What you’re seeing here is Angelina inhabiting a genre. She does that that effortlessly and authentically: blues, jazz, soul, ballads, r&b, pop… I’ve been listening to music since the 1950’s. Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve ever heard. Just pick a title you like-any age, any genre-and you’ll become a believer.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. The spoken language is Norwegian: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpaWZtdkydOmkp8.html

I love it when somebody with so much knowledge about jazz hears Angelina perform. It is very unusual for a young girl like her now a days to be interested in jazz, especially at this age. I have heard everything she has done, and nobody tells her, this is how you do it, she does all of this on her own. Including the arrangements. Her grandmom played jazz in the house when she was growing up. And with her unbelievable natural talent, this is what we are blessed with. Continue your journey, it is a rabbit hole for sure!!

Angelina says this is about love. She referred to it as " desparate love." She is an emotional empath. She also says at 1 and a half "l started with jazz." At this point she had already performed "Fly Me to the Moon" after Sinatra on American TV (The View). Angelina is very conscious of the history and background of songs and arrangements.

Greatly enjoyed your reaction and analysis. I learned of Angelina 4 years ago. Her music and who she is as a person, has turned me into a superfan at age 65. I am inspired to introduce Angelina to as many people as I can and to learn more about her unique talents. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for her. KZfaq wouldn't allow me to post the full biography. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on KZfaq. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of Angelina Jordan!" What a great addition you are to her expanding family around the world! When you play this back for yourself it will seem like you are talking about a veteran artist who has been singing for years and has perfected her style. Wrong! She's 9 and she had a lot of influence on this arrangement. I know you will probably go next to her performances on Norway's Got Talent and then I CANNOT WAIT till you listen to her sing 'What A Difference A Day Makes' at 8 years old singing at an outdoor event in front of thousands in the audience. Somewhere Dinah Washington's spirit smiles whenever she hears Angelina singing this great classic. So much more but I'll save it. Btw, this was the best breakdown of this video I have heard by anyone and let me tell you, a lot of very knowledgeable people have reacted to her performance.

It is not uncommon in Norwegian, especially for children, to say yes or no on inhale. As an old male I can't get even close to that high pitch though, nor the maintained and fairly stable pitch. I don't know how hard it is to do for people that didn't do it as children, but I would guess most adult Norwegians are at least to some degree able to vocalize short words on inhale.

She had obviously made last minute changes. We saw him smile as she handed over the note. She chose the Hungarian suicide song GLOOMY SUNDAY to audition at 7 for Norways Talent. So cute with her missing teeth she killed it and everything changed. You saw that realisation hit her mum and she was not hsppy about it. The family protected Angelina as much as possible.

Everyone says that about the notes - and don't get me wrong it may well be true - but from the video it's a completely different cut almost B-Roll. It doesn't mean it happened right then and there or that it was last minute cuts. Nevertheless, I love the concept and want it to be true

Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZfaq, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Went back and watched again looking at these. I did notice the candle but actually thought it was a coffee mug. I did catch that it was screaming Jay though. I saw the bass player smile but honestly going back a second time I'm not sure there is really any significance. I'm sure every one of those musicians is a billion times more aware than we are of her brilliance by actually working with her. Maybe that is included as a small reminder of that. I did see the notes letter but didn't actually understand it so thanks (though someone else commented on the same). I saw her looking at the sheet music. Here were my thoughts on this and dang it I wanted to comment on it lol... You'll see jazz musicians have sheet music when often they don't need it. I imagine it's for many reasons depending on the musician. Some might have made notes like you suggest. For me, I visualize chords, chord progressions, melodies, and solos all in my brain. But that can get really messy and complicated. Seeing it on paper allows one to tap into a different creative stream. Moreover, I'm visually oriented so when I hear the rhythm section making some adjustments or anyone else for that matter, I can understand it quicker (I guess my neurons fire faster when visually induced?) when looking on paper. Who knows for her. Re: passion ..yeah she is definitely DEEPLY connected throughout. W.r.t. to her hands and body, I could be wrong but I think she's just grooving. Simple as that. Yeah that breath control is RIDONKulous for her body. I COMPLETELY missed that double vibrato. Fascinating. I did notice her completely playing with the vowels and creating all kinds of sounds with that entire ending phrases as well as stretching timing, volume, intonation, and many other variables. It was a mini clinic all in 5 seconds! Hmmm...I didn't consider the pensive child perspective either. I can see that. I'm not sure but it's definitely very interesting to consider. The last one. I feel it's much much more than that. Her technique is ridiculous and that gives her not only confidence and conviction but a garage full of tools at her disposal. Thank you Soo much for all of this. I rewatched the whole thing from a different perspective 😍

🎉🎉🎉 The Barefoot Princess - (From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.) Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them. Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

I believe strongly Angelina used this 1956 Screamin Jay Hawkins arrangement version as a basis to reconstruct the version she ended up with, minus his theatrics. And slowed it down. This has the sax solo, same place, and the vocal 'woooh's near the end. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdh-o6tnzt_Tm30.html His face matches the candle Angelina is holding at the start of her video.

AJ is empathic to an unbelieveably high degree. I think that's the key to her level of emotional expression at such an early age. She can glean the emotions from another's vocal performance and internalize them, whether she has experienced them or not. Then she adds them to her own vocal performances. So she can easily sing believably about obsessive love, using her idea of it without actually having experienced it romantically. About the barefoot thing, she actually wrote a book about the experience that caused her to make that pledge, and became the youngest published author in Norway among her many other incredible accomplishments.

I have viewed thousands of reactions over the past several years, reflecting my great interest in music and especially aspiring artists. I can say without reservation that this is one of the finest reactions I have ever seen! Your insight and knowledge of the music, and your interest in the artist background, are almost second to none. I know your channel will do very well and I'm here for it! Norwegian born Angelina Jordan began singing at the age of one and a half, and by age three was listening to jazz and classics legends on repeat. Her grandmother was her greatest influence, but Angelina chose her own path. Her first studio performance was at age 7, singing I Who Have Nothing. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of only 8, singing old time classics from Billie Holliday and George Gershwin, and became one of the youngest ever vocalists to win an international Got Talent Show! Her performance at 9 years old of Screamin Jay Hawkins, I Put a Spell on You is considered one of the finest recordings ever of a 9-year-old vocalist! Angelina also went viral on America's Got Talent the champions in 2020 with her unique versions of Bohemian Rhapsody and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Angelina sings in English which unbelievably is her third language! She is a true prodigy. She is now 18, and has recorded a huge library of songs, including covers and several originals. A major attraction to Angelina's music is the emotion and attitude she conveys, although she has not experienced the life events! She is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices as she can adjust her tone, style, and register for any song or genre. She was signed by Republic Records when she was 14. She was not widely promoted for a few years, as her family wanted to allow her a normal childhood. However, things are changing rapidly as she has now graduated school. She has released two original music video singles from Republic Records, Love Don't Let Me Go, and Now I'm the Fool, coinciding with her new six song EP called Old Enough. The four other songs have been released as visualizers. A world tour is in the works, likely to coincide with her full album release. Here is a semi-chronological KZfaq playlist for Angelina of over 200 songs, beginning with 16 performances including originals, her EP, and a few specialty songs. Then it starts chronologically beginning with Gloomy Sunday from Norway's Got Talent. kzfaq.info/sun/PL2v8kgVeo4EbQD6l_WAVjOfItquzW7oEc&si=HrEm55lV164yKJqu Why does Angelina sing barefoot? The answer may bring a tear to your eye. It is related to a promise she made to herself and to the world when she was only 6 years old. She was traveling in the Middle East with her mom and grandmother and they came across a young orphan girl with no shoes and scarred feet. Angelina gave the girl her own favorite shoes. Angelina ask the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and she said a doctor, but she could not because she had to take care of her siblings. She asked Angelina the same question and Angelina said I want to sing for the world. The young girl said she would pray for Angelina. Since then, Angelia has forever performed barefoot as a reminder of all those less fortunate. At age 9 she wrote a book about this experience, Between two Hearts, becoming the youngest ever published author in Norway. She also has helped raise millions for children's charities. She even stated at 8 years old that she would be donating her winnings from Norway's Got Talent to charities. She is a special individual, and one you cannot follow without developing an emotional bond. Angelina captures hearts because she is humble and has compassion for humanity. Her stated goal from childhood was to sing for the world and spread love and peace. I trust this will cause you to embrace her as millions of others have, and that you will continue down the rabbit hole from which you will not want to escape. Peace and love.

After seeing her live three times, she is much better live than the videos show. She is not a new commodity but because her parents insisted on AJ completing her education, she is not as well known by the general public. Her cover of Summertime during the final of NGT is epic. Opening for Norah Jones at age 11, Quincy Jones at 12, in a TV show at about 10, singing for a movie, performing around the world for many world leaders, performing for the Nobel peace prizes twice are just some of her amazing accomplishments. You have gone down a rabbit hole that is amazing.

No scatting. She's not that kind of jazz singer.😁 That's not to say she never improvises, mind you - it's just that the kind of improvisation she engages in is a whole lot more subtle than that. It's mainly found in the precise selection of riffs, runs, swoops, and other kinds of small vocal decorations she adds to the basic arrangement she has chosen. In fact, I would say it's basically impossible to tell when she's making choices "on the fly" vs. doing things that she has carefully planned out - well… except in cases where we have multiple takes in the studio, or rehearsals vs. final live performances, where you can see how much of her performance changes from one take to another (usually not much). An interesting example where you can actually see her changing her mind about how she wants to sing a song as she's singing it is a "jam" session she did at around this same age for another Hawkins song, "Portrait of a Man" - which Angelina changed to "Portrait of a Child" - that is also found on her Official channel (like this video you just watched). She doesn't seem to have ever performed the song in public, so that jam session might be the only time she ever sang the song with musicians. (BTW, if you're susceptible to motion sickness, you will have a hard time watching the video. You have been warned.)

Hello Aron, nice that you took a little look into Angelina's rabbit hole. She was 9 years old when she heard this song, she arranged everything herself based on the original by Screaming J. Hawkins from 1956, you are at the very beginning and I hope that you will embark on the further journey because there is a lot to discover, she is the best singer in the world (my opinion), but you will find out for yourself and believe me, you will be addicted to her voice just like all other fans (Angels), she is also called the barefoot angel with 1000 voices, why she always performs barefoot is another story, she can adapt and improve her voice to any song and also convey a lot of emotions and she has not only written around 200 covers but also 13 originals written by her and 2 written for her, all of which are amazing and are already legendary and there is a lot to tell, I look forward to further reactions and have now subscribed to you, greetings from Germany, by the way, she is now 18 years old

She can sing as low if not lower than Elvis on How Great Thou Art. Classical Composer Nico Cartosio, his only piece on his album Melting that has a song, is one he wrote specifically for Angelina Jordan, 'A Song for A'. He recorded the music on Abbey Road, she recorded the lyrics in LA. The only video of it out is the audio with the lyrics.

Wow 2nd video in to AJ and already begun to see the pure legendary qualities of our Angelina. Lol, once you said you study Jazz I knew hook line and sinker you were in her net! This will be fun to see you on this Journey. Jazz is her roots she started listening to jazz at the age of 2. Edit) Fly Me to the Moon you have 3 to choose from. The music video in the thunbnail directed by her grandma Mery, the live version from the view when she was slighly younger (8) OR the version she sung when she was invited by Quincy Jones to sing his orchestrated version for Quincy 85th Bday event at the O2 in London when she was 12 years old.

As a jazz lover yourself perhaps your next best Angelina reactions would be to "Feeling Good" at 10 live on Norways TV or take a look at the beginning with "Gloomy Sunday" on NGT (Norway's Got Talent). Three of the four NGT songs are Jazz classics except for Bang Bang (You Shot Me Down) which itself is stunning. These songs are all abridged versions to fit the show format so some Reactors have done all four at once. Love your in depth reaction. Thanks

Finally!!!! Someone who does really understand talent. Finally someone that said the truth. At 9 years of age here Angelina is already at the level of great artists we have today or even better. Dimash 29 years or whatever his age is, Angelina at 9 is up there, 20 years ahead. Thank you for being honest, and not holding back to say that. Because of obvious reasons. Plus Dimash uses a lot of artificial help, but lets not get into that. This is completely raw talent here. I'm a sub surely for that. Angelina is the real next great, lets just hope the industry doesn't ruin her. Peace and love God Bless

Thanks so much. Please note that I have quite a few reactions to her now and go back in time moving forward. That said, I am honest in critiquing here BECAUSE of who she is. Some don't like it and say "how can you criticize her at 6 or 7 years old. To me, it's all about cataloguing the progression of a modern day Mozart!

@@A-AronReacts You're welcome. Absolutely, as for me I like when they treat Angelina as an adult and critique her performances and try to find really minor imperfections. Because she is really that good, she is a force to study. I know a lot of fans might get on you for it, but don't be sensitive about it and keep going. Do what you feel and say what you feel. Ignore bad comments and stay focused on the good comments and good constructive criticism. You ain't seen nothing yet Aron, wait till you get to "I'd rather go blind" at 12/13 years of age. I'm right now watching all your reactions to her in order by upload date. God Bless

What do you mean Dimash uses artificial help? I hope you're not suggesting that he isn't one of the most technically sound vocal masterminds the world has ever seen? 😜

@@AaronHillyer It's fake. You have no idea. To just say that, you clearly don't know. I am suggesting that 50% of his skill relies on artificial help. I'm 100% sure someone that is somewhat knowledgeable about vocals knows. Or should I say you know, but deny it. I heard Dimash once, and I'm honest not like you it's robotic vocals and pitch correction galore. I couldn't listen to half the song. Wake up from a dream if you think he is the greatest LOL. I'm used to listen to real talent and raw vocals only, so fake vocals I distinguish immediately. Or are you being sarcastic... Because to me it's so obvious, that you have to be brainwashed or dreaming to never think that it's fake. I mean he has talent obviously, but the amazing notes are all fake. Live pitch corrected in real time and obviously even releases. But hey you may say what you like after all, it's just your opinion.

@@AaronHillyer So you say that then silence.... Tell me have you ever thought of that? Pavarotti in his late career was the closest to ever be to pitch perfect. No one that is human can be on perfect pitch sustained for long time. The human voice is not capable. And you are saying That Dimash has better pitch than Pavarotti while he jumps and moves around on stage. Wake up.... It's all fake it's a software. I'm guessing for you to leave a comment like that with an emoji at the end and doesn't reply back. You are fake too, for accepting fake singers and glorifying them as the best the world has seen . Be real, listen to more Angelina and you will get the taste of the real human voice and what the human voice is what really is capable of. Not Ai software. Pff you fake trolls make me sick
