it is an exercise. It is not supposed to be an impro. Here is a definition of an exercise: In the context of musical learning, an "exercise" refers to a deliberate and structured activity designed to enhance and refine specific skills, techniques, or aspects of a musician's performance. Unlike the spontaneity of playing a full piece of music, exercises isolate and focus on particular elements, providing a targeted approach to skill development.

You could say Interstellar Space by Coltrane was unmusical. It is pure human expression. Who ultimately is to judge what is musical or not. The great creators could not be stifled by such thoughts or questions. Stravinsky comes to mind.
