To answer a few of your questions: - they arrange their music themselves with the help of Ben Bram (often called the secret 6th member of PTX) - vocal ranges for the members: (left to right) - Kirstin: Mezzo-soprano - Mitch: Counter tenor - Scott: Baritone (but with a huge range, he could also be classified as bass-baritone, bari-tenor and even tenor) - Kevin: Tenor (and beatboxer) - Avi: Bass

I totally agree with you about them being musically aware. None of them are trying to overshadow anyone else, and I think that shows their maturity in music. Great reaction!

You'll notice that, through most of the song, their eyes are closed, listening closely to each other. This was filmed in a cathedral in Germany during one of their early European tours, hence the acoustics. Avi Kaplan, the bass on the far right, trained as a Basso Profundo in his opera major in college (theory & composition minor), and always puts a great deal of passion into his singing. He left PTX amicably in 2017 for personal reasons, and has since developed a strong solo career, with 3 EP's under his belt so far. The first, recorded when he was still in PTX is under the name Avriel & The Sequoias, and all songs on it are excellent. The second is highlighted by his most successful piece so far, "Change on the Rise". And since you're focused on drums, some of the other songs on his 2019 EP "I'll Get By", have great drum parts by Scott Seiver, especially the brooding bass drum atmosphere Seiver brings to Avi's "Chains" (additional drums added by producer Mike Mogis). Check out what I'm talking about - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grqFZpOEybSziIU.html

Some of the churches in Germany have some incredible acoustics. The choir I was in sang in the Frauenkirche in Munich. From the altar area, when we cut off at the end of a song, the echo came back 15 seconds later and a step lower. Crazy.

I agree completely, they know how to “get out of each others way” during the song. And they can share the lead between members seamlessly. Looking forward to more PTX Christmas! Six albums to choose from. LOL!

Great reaction! It's always more interesting to hear comments with real content. Would love to hear you react to more PTX, especially their Daft Punk medley (I'm not a techno-music fan, but this video is riveting), Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (really, it's genius!), and definitely Bohemian Rhapsody, if you're into drums.

Thank you very much! I absolutely try to add real substance to my videos as I believe it's much more respectful to my viewers. I'm definitely adding the Daft Punk medley to my list because I'm very interested to see the creativity of melding two seemingly very different genres. Thank you very much for your suggestion and for stopping by!

Thanks for reacting and your interesting commentary. They have just released a stunning version of Amazing Grace off their new Christmas album and a beautiful song called Thank You (original written by Scott, tall blonde, and his partner) that is so beautiful and appropriate for this 2020 heck of a year we've had. ☺️

The more I listen to this, the more it reminds me of a stream gently falling down a mountainside and through a forest glade. Each person's line seems to move independently, yet they all flow together. I believe it was captured with a single microphone. They listened intently to each other.

For me the first thing coming to my mind whenever I hear it is : PERFECTION They all are overly talented. They have dozens of Christmas songs. Maybe try "Oh come all ye faithful" next. They "pentatonixed" it and it's so much fun to listen to. If you like it more classical I recommend "Dance of the sugarplum Fairy". They won a Grammy for this arrangement 👍

Great Info!! Just now becoming a mesmerized listener to Pentatonix!! What a God Given Gift they possess! Thanks so much for the video (looking for a virtual drum instructor! He LOVES percussion!! Needs direction & attention to the gift he was given. (He’s 13yrs old..has self instructed..& showed interest since age 2:.when he started playing ‘straws on pillows’..no really ...without ANY prompting.. except “band”.. when classes are not elearning/virtual) I suppose I should’ve asked.. Do you offer virtual nstructional percussion lessons? Many thanks.. from a slightly frustrated...Small town Mom.. with minimal resources for learning percussion! Fondly~ Mom Grace

Avi Kaplan, the tenor, has a very nice 5 octave range. He is classically trained and is also a polyphonic/overtone singer. You should hear his whistle notes when he does his overtone singing. He had already received a invitation as the bass for the L. A. Opera when Scott found him via Ben Bram. PTX will never have the fabulous sound they had when Avi was with them. He sounds so rich in all of his octaves. He now has a solo career and writes 99% of his own music. I have no idea who arranged this particular piece, but I know Ben Bram did and does a lot of arranging for them. Avi had a dream, and approached Ben Bram and another gentleman whose name has escaped me. His dream was to found an A Capella choir for young people from all over the world. The three men are called The Daddies for the choir members. They chose the best of the best and bring to a college in California every year for the choir camp. If some cannot financially afford it, Avi raises money to pay for them to attend. He is quite the loner, not a social animal. lives deep in the forests of Tennessee in his cabin. He does his writing on his porch. He said his driveway is over a mile long. Enjoyed your reaction.

There are some segments on You Tube from the Sing Off days that show them arranging their own music. They do it on the fly and, as far as I know, no one writes it down. They are just great musicians. Having sung bass in acapella groups all of my life I have a deep admiration and respect for what they do.

Silent Night is often overlooked in reactions to Pentatonix but not by professionals or music instructors. I have learned quite a bit about voice parts along with the rest of it from these. When the bass (Avi) kicks up an octave or so to sing the melody you remarked on that. That would be in his upper register and he uses it to great effect more so than most bass singers.
