I was driving home and passed a push string trimmer at the end of someone's driveway. It was in rough shape, but the engine rotated and it had compression. How bad can it be?

I no longer use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner. Harbor Freight changed the recipe. The bottle previously stated "NON-CORROSIVE". Now it says "CORROSIVE", "do not user on Aluminum". It now damages most carburetors. Recently I have been using Simple Green PRO HD with good results.

Initially, I was discouraged when I saw that the video length was 1:40:18. Once I started watching and seeing the resurrection of this trimmer, I was mesmerized and next thing I knew, James, you were cleaning out the weeds. Looks like you will need to keep that trimmer for your own back areas! Great video!

These wheeled strimmers usually have a plastic dome that fits on the underside of the cutting head - this allows easy movement across the ground and sets the cutting height when used as a grass mower. Might be worth checking if yours should have one, it looks like it's possibly missing.

Aloha James. For the rusty paint on the string trimmer metal, you should get some Roto Strippers. They come in fine and coarse units, and if you would put one in a drill that runs 3,000 rpm, it would make quick and efficient work of removing the old paint, and the Roro Strippers will also remove rust very well too. It was amazing to see how the rust had migrated under the paint even though the paint looked pretty good. I successfully removed a ton of rust from a rusty steel set of rocket launch rails using my coarse Roto Stripper. I quickly and easily cleaned up 74 feet of rusty launch rail for a rocket launch, and the Roto Stripper worked very well for removing all of the rust and corrosion from those rocket launch rail segments. It is basically several sets of hardened spring wires held onto a rotating drum that goes into a drill chuck. The faster the drill turns, the better the steel wires of the Roto Stripper work. It also works well to remove rust from brake rotors and drums when I turn them during a brake job. Check it out and see if it would be a useful addition to the suite of tools in your garage. The Roto Strippers would have also made quick work of removing the rust from the pulley grooves on the string trimmer too.

Hello James! If you have a keyless drill chuck? It’s the best way to pull dowel pins out! Just put a washer or a piece of metal in between drill chuck and surface to give you a gap to put a pry bar or screwdriver in to pry up chuck and pull pins. Drill chuck has a lot more grip strength! Retired machinist here! Pulled many pins from work tables!

I'm wondering if you added a couple grease fittings to the tube and greasing it would help the sloppiness? Nice little machine! Thanks!

I love those Briggs carbs. They are so simple to work on, and they usually always come back to life if you give them a little TLC. I had someone give me a mower with a Briggs engine that had been sitting in their back yard. They told me it quit running and they parked it and bought a new one. The carb was completely encased in mud. I ran some water over it and gave it a dip in the ultrasonic and it ran like a new carb.
