We're getting back to Project Tetanus. Come along as I demonstrate how to put together JCR Offroad's DIY Comanche MJ rear bumper kit. This kit looks outstanding and is built like a brick @#$% house!
We recommend this as a good beginners welder: amzn.to/2eaQ6Xw

Videos like these is why i enjoy Bleeping Jeep so much. Video demonstrations of projects the average man or woman can accomplish. It is also awesome that a JCR offers kits like this so the weekend warrior can have fun working and learning how to build and fabricate parts like these. I would much rather build the bumper from a kit like this than buy one pre built and ready to go. I can only imagine it is cheaper also. Bumper looks great.

+chefdan87 The JCR stuff is great, I have their front and rear DIY TJ bumpers on mine. Fun project and saved a lot of money compared to buying pre-made bumpers. Also easy to customize for your own personal needs.

+rzr kid They have a kind of hybrid frame. The rear is boxed under the truck bed and then the front is permanently welded onto the cab. They have really strong frames for the size truck they are. The rear frame rails are nearly 8" deep!

just something I picked up on. I'm almost 100% sure that you installed the trailer receiver square tube in backwards. most ball hitches have the pin go through an inch from the outside edge of the tube. so essentially the 1.5inches or so that you have of the tube sticking out past the brace inside the bumper, should actually be sticking out of the bumper face. the brace on the inside should be flush with non drilled side of the tube and the pin hole should stick out past the face of the bumper. I don't think any ball receiver will be able to go far enough in to fit the pin through with your setup. just my $0.02

What settings do you have your welder?
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
+Wilbur Dewberry The 140 has an auto-setting feature that's really nice. You turn the wire speed knob to the size wire you're using (.24 in this case), and then set the bottom knob (power) to your metal thickness (3/16"). That's the max thickness this machine is rated for so those settings probably translate to "turn it up all the way"

Does this bumper work with XJs too or is this a MJ special bumper. I wasn't sure if it was an MJ/XJ bumper or not
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
+WolfKingJS54 This will not work on the XJ's, it's specifically for the MJ's. But JCR does make a complete kit for the XJ. Check out this link for JCR's XJ kit: www.jcroffroad.com/product/XJMISC/DIY-XJ-R.html They also make a couple front bumper kits as well.

@tylerbleepinjeep606

+WolfKingJS54 Probably because you have to go to the XJ page to find any of their MJ stuff. They don't have a dedicated MJ page. That may be the cause of the confusion.

Why is the hitch installed that way? Isnt it hard to hook the pin in from underneath instead of at the rear?
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
+Maverick Xeo It's not THAT bad. The hitch is recessed like that so it doesn't snag on obsticles as you drop off rocks, etc. It's supposed to give you a better departure angle. I also really like the look of the recessed hitch. I wish I had done this with my YJ. Check out my walk around video on that jeep to see what I mean.
@MaverickXeo
@MaverickXeo 8 жыл бұрын
+Tyler Bleepinjeep I kinda figured that, but its good to know its not that hard to pin it in.
@Briebabcock8052
@Briebabcock8052 8 жыл бұрын
Well, for one, you screwed your self over by welding the hitch on backwards; and two, it you don't have a mig welder but you have a stick welder, could you use that with 1/16th inch 6010 or 1/16th inch 7018 or 1/8th inch 6010?
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 8 жыл бұрын
you absolutely could do this kit with a stick welder. I don't stick weld much but I usually prefer 7018 rod when I do.

@kevinhornbuckle
@kevinhornbuckle 8 жыл бұрын
It depends on how often you will be adding or removing the hitch. Myself, since I tow a lot, I would have gotten a longer receiver tube and extended it about 2.5". Add two triangle shaped gussets with holes in them for the safety chains.
@hugeslacker
@hugeslacker 8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Hornbuckle Yeah it needs chain mounts on it definitely. I use my hitch for my bike rack, so taking it on and off would be really annoying this way
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
+hugeslacker the two rectangles you see under the hitch towards the end of the video are your chain mounts. If you ever had to use them during a hitch failure, they would probably bend the crap out of the bumper, but I think this design was meant more for rock crawling with very occasional towing rather than the other way around. If you tow a lot, you would probably want to modify a few things. That's the great thing about a DIY kit though, you can really do whatever you want along the way.

that's a stupid place to put the receiver pin. other than that it looks good
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
+austin cassell The idea is to have as little stick-out on the hitch as possible. That way you don't blow your departure angle. It makes getting the pin in a bit more awkward, but it's really not THAT bad. I think its a worthwhile trade off for the improved looks. But it is a DIY kit. If you want to extend the hitch out you can.
